Grandpa Style!

I only did half of a coin snapped, along with quite a lot of fresh basil leaves muddled up and steeped together in the liquor grandpa style, just to do something a little more fun and experimental. The result is still pretty delicious with a very, very bitter dark cocoa note swiftly followed up by a whole lot of fresh, savory herbaceousness. Even though this isn’t even close to being a sweet brew, there is something sorta indulgent about it. If you’ve never had dark chocolate dipped or coated basil before, I’d highly recommend. It’s a unique juxtaposition of flavours, but it works shockingly well and this is basil just the tea version of that!

Gongfu!

I’ve been loving the little explosion of Vietnamese teas that I’ve been seeing here on Instagram lately, so I decided to dig out this sample from Tea Thought’s last advent calendar and revisit it. It’s definitely a delightfully sweet and deeply full-bodied tasting tea with such an incredibly distinct burnt sugar profile with almost biscuit-like undertones. I feel like last time I got a lot of more jammy and stewed red fruit/plum notes, but this time I thought those flavour were a lot more modest and the cozier baked sweet potato and cinnamon notes were bolder. With such a strong burnt or caramelized sugar note I thought the whole session had an almost sweet potato pie kind of feel to it, which was just lovely! But also that sugar and biscuit duo also says “Okinawa Black Sugar” in a fun way too!

Gongfu!

Steeped this along with some fresh, lightly sweet green grapes. This was an early morning session, and the lighter but crisp and cooling flavours of the white tea were the perfect gentle but still invigorating and fresh feeling start to the day. Less of an early morning slap awake than a black tea, but still kind of perky in its own way. For me, cucumber pulp is always a favourite tasting note in a white tea, and it pairs so naturally with the subtle but crisp sweetness of the grapes that were nibbled on throughout this session!

I think this is the best drink I’ve ever had from Guayaki! The carbonation level isn’t too intense at all, and the flavour is pronounced without over taking the more subtly smoky, sweet and grassy flavour of the guayusa. It makes me think of ginger beer crossed with, like, a cola gummy candy?! Definitely spiced, but in a sweet and soda-like kind of way. A fantastic option, IMO, when it comes to RTD with a bit of an energy boost.

drank Mango by Brisk

Saw this the most recent time I was grocery shopping and, of course, I always have to try a new Brisk flavour when I see it. Obviously it’s incredibly sweet, so if sweet tea isn’t your thing I’d for sure recommend avoiding. However, looking past the near-cloying level of sugar I _do_actually QUITE enjoy the particular mango flavour used. It starts very ripe and juicy with an almost honeyed undertone, but then it finishes with a little more of the pine-y and resinous edge that you get from just underripe mangoes. It’s deceptively nuanced!

The blackberry flavour from Brisk has been my favourite for a long time, but I think this could maybe give it a run for its money.

Not much to say here other than it did indeed taste like basil! Very aromatic with a light tingly sensation on the tip of the tongue. I enjoyed the simple, smooth and herbaceous flavour and found it mildly relaxing to sip on.

A hot cuppa from earlier in the week! I still really enjoyed the playful balance of sweet, jammier raspberry with the bright and lively lemon, but I did find this a little bit more of a brisk and tannic cup with a more intensely bodied black tea, maltiness, and also notable astringency.

Late night cuppa!

I own a pretty shockingly high amount of different root beer flavoured teas, and each and every one of them really feels distinct from one another. This is probably the sweetest and creamiest tasting, really nailing that thick and creamy vanilla ice cream note in the back end of the sip. Though it’s initially all root beer, the woody quality of the rooibos does peak out a little bit between the initial sweetness and then that float component. I like the taste of it, and I think it helps counter some of the more sugary notes. But I don’t think it would be for everyone…

drank Oh Canada by DAVIDsTEA

A late night cuppa. I expected it to be sweet, but it was surprisingly a little more sweet than even I had anticipated. Really, really strong amber maple flavour that coats the whole palate and lingers well after each swallow. However, also this sort of undertone that I can only think to describe as oatmeal-like!? Definitely a cozy breakfast kind of vibe overall which is a little ironic because I was drinking it so very late in the evening.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts and feelings regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Cold Brew!

Surprisingly this cold brew was, like, 80% super thick creme anglais flavour with very minimal floral rose. I appreciated the thickness of it though, and I’m never really upset about a really rich and velvety smooth vanilla black tea. Still, I’d have liked a SMIDGE more rose in this brew.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
