I’ve tried Scottish Breakfasts before that were a little…shall we say raw. This one isn’t raw at all. It’s very complete and coherent. I’ve been a fan of Irish Breakfast for years, but this one might top it. It’s such a rich black tea that it has a dark chocolate overtone to it. Of course I’ll always trust anything Taylor’s of Harrogate produces. They sell spectacular teas.

I was ready to not be impressed by this. I’m not usually a fan of twee flavours of tea, but as it turns out, there’s nothing twee about Earl Greypfruit (in spite of the name). Earl Grey already has a strong citrus flavour; grapefruit instead of bergamot is a surprisingly perfect move. This tea is clean and very fresh-tasting, not bitter at all, not from the grapefruit, or from the tea. I got really into this tea about two years ago after sniffing it at the Tealish shop on Queen West, and I figured I’d get over it after a few months. I still drink a cup of it practically every morning. It’s perfect. I love it.

I adore this tea. I’ve always been a fan of breakfast-style teas, with their mellowness and all-around pleasant flavour, but this is the queen. It’s strong and doesn’t need a long steep. It loves a splash of milk, but it comes with a hint of its own sweetness. It’s got a malty friendliness that makes it perfect for morning, though I’d take a cup of it any time of day. Wonderful; my very favourite.
