drank Coco Chai Rooibos by DAVIDsTEA
79 tasting notes

Finally getting to the last couple of little sample packs I have kicking around, some where teas I already had and other were ones I hadn’t even heard of yet from DT. This round it is Coco Chai Rooibos, and to be honest the dry aroma of this tea almost put me off of it because it was so pungent and floral the first thing that came to my mind was potpourri.

The taste is a little bit all over the place, I get the cinnamon nicely but there is a multitude of other flavors that I really can’t pin down to anything specific. I will say that even though there is a bunch of stuff going on flavor wise it is certainly a tasty tea. That being said I don’t think it is one I will go out of my way to purchase, as a few people here have said it would probably make a good latte but my sample was only enough for one cup so I wont get a chance to try that out.

drank Citron Oolong by DAVIDsTEA

They call me mellow yellow…that’s right

This was another oolong that I have been passing by for the last couple of months, never really even bothering to give it a thought, I know how rude and unappreciative of me! In a bid to cross them all off my list I took a whiff of this oolong the other day and immediately had to have some. Dry it has a nice pleasing smooth citrus aroma, very lemony but not overpowering or fake.

The final brew is fairly light in color, and retains its delicious citrus aroma, after the first sip I was hooked. I really like citrus tea’s but most are generally fairly powerful; however Citron Oolong was the exact opposite the citrus profile for this tea is tame and mellow, very relaxing in fact. I was slightly taken off guard by this tea, I knew it would be citrusy but I never figured it would be such a wonderfully soft flavor.

drank Ginseng Oolong by DAVIDsTEA

Funky, weird, tasty…

I’ve been on an Oolong streak for the last week, I have almost knocked off all the oolong’s DAVIDsTEA has to offer, many tasting notes will be coming in the next couple days, especially the straight oolongs.

I kept getting told I had to try this tea, it is one of the favorites of a couple of the girls that work in my local Davids store. At first I was put off of it mistakenly thinking it was ginger not ginseng, after clearing that up I considered it was worth a try.

I found this to be a unique tea not only in appearance but in flavor as well. The ginseng coated oolong balls look more like something you would find at the bottom of an improperly cleaned aquarium, funny enough the smell is not too far off to boot! Steeping the tea brings out more of the ginseng sweetness in the aroma.

The final brew is quite dark compared to a lot of the other oolongs I have been drinking, I believe the only one really comparable so far in color for me has been high mountain oolong. But between various steeping times and Gung Fu methods its been a wide variety of colors and flavors from the oolongs.

I don’t quite know where I sit with this tea, I bought a 26 gram sample and have gone through about half of it. I enjoy the taste but I am still not sure if it is one I would keep in my stash or not, it’s got the rest of this sample to wow me otherwise it might get removed.

drank Prairie Berry by DAVIDsTEA
79 tasting notes

Well I know absolutely nothing about Saskatoon or Saskatchewan in general, I have only been through it once in a vehicle and I slept and the other times I have flown over it so I am generally too busy watching a movie and enjoying a utterly horrible in-flight meal!

I got this tea as a sampler pack from DAVIDsTEA with an online order and I decided to grab this and a coco chai rooibos pack as I was rushing out the door to work this morning. I brewed Prairie Berry first, naturally because it has caffeine content to it and that is something we can all use on a Monday morning back to work.

As soon as I opened the package I knew I was most likely going to enjoy this tea, up to this point I had yet to try or even smell this one and it sits on the tea wall at my local store. It had a nice jam aroma to it similar to Blueberry Jam; however this smelled more sweet. Steeping the tea brought out a sweet smelling berry aroma that had me drooling waiting for it to be ready to drink.

The final brew is quite dark and sweet smelling, the taste is utterly awesome I don’t know why I have passed by this one so many times, I mean I freaking LOVE blueberry jam and while this is similar it has a totally different flavor profile. I wish I had of grabbed some of this one instead of the copious other oolongs I grabbed from Davids, basically the entire collection minus Prairie Berry and Pineapple Oolong. This will certainly be a main one I keep, I dare say I may like it more then Long Life Oolong :O

Mint and Chocolate are two of my favorite ingredients for a tea, as anyone can tell from looking at my Read My Lips tin, it is almost always empty its a very vicious cycle of purchasing it and consuming it…Enter Mint Chocolate Rooibos!

My sister loves this tea, funny she tried it after I introduced her to Read My Lips. I was complaining that I didn’t have any (read my lips) so immediately she said I had to try this tea, as I was heading out of her house she handed me a DT sample pack that had come with one of her online orders. I went home and brewed it up and immediately fell in love.

I find the flavor profile quite similar to read my lips; however the touch of vanilla in mint chocolate takes it to another level. It’s not like drinking the same tea as read my lips so it is a change up, but a slight one at that. I guess it would be great for those concerned about caffeine as well; however that is not one of my larger concerns.

Definitely a keeper for those who like mint and chocolate!

All I can really say about this tea is it is certainly intriguing for what it is. It may not be the same as a real root beer float; however it’s pretty much as close as your going to get with tea and without adding ice cream.

The minute I opened this tea I could confirm without a doubt it smelled like a root beer float, the vanilla really imparts the float aspect to me. I would have been nicer to have a smidgen more vanilla come through in the steeped beverage as it probably would have solidified the float aspect of this tea even more; however it is still a winner in my books.

This is one I will probably keep on hand, not only just to be able to smell it, but I am sure once people see a root beer float tea they will be wanting to try it, I mean I have that issue with a large portion of my dessert teas as it is!

drank Strawberry Shortcake by DAVIDsTEA
79 tasting notes

I think I might have a think for teas with Strawberry in them, I have Sweet Strawberry, Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble, Earls Garden and now Strawberry Shortcake. Worse is the dessert collection is even larger then this now!

Dry this tea has a very present strawberry smell with a slight hint of creaminess, it has an aroma very similar to candy, but I really wouldn’t recommend eating the tea leaves. Steeping the tea draws out more of that strawberry aroma into the air, certainly an aroma anyone in the room can enjoy.

The flavor really doesn’t strike me too much as strawberry shortcake, I certainly get the strawberry; however the shortcake would appear to be absent. There is a long lingering creamy aftertaste that could be compared to the taste of packaged whipped cream, not horrible but if you grew up on homemade whip cream it’s just not the same.

Certainly a good tasting tea, nice and sweet with a bunch of flavor, not exactly what I was expecting. I think my expectation of strawberry shortcake flavoring outside of the real deal is just too high.

If you love strawberry teas you should definitely check out Lupicia’s Strawberry & Vanilla, it’s so yummy!

Great to know, something else to check out in the future, as I really like both strawberry and vanilla.

drank Carrot Cake by DAVIDsTEA
79 tasting notes

So as I continue my venture of consuming all the “dessert” tea’s that DAVIDsTEA has to offer I have finally stumbled along to Carrot Cake Oolong. Which just sounds great to me, I like Carrot Cake and Oolong so this should be a great match…right?

As I write this I have a big cup of it steeping on my desk at work to write this review (it’s a slow day, don’t judge me!) and I must confess I received the tea last night and hesitated drinking it because of the dry smell. As others have mentioned here it does have a very powerful and slightly displeasing smell on the nose as dry leaves. I do not know if it is a combination of all the freeze dried goods or the coconut but it does have a slightly chemical smell to it. Steeped however it loses all of that harsh smell and transforms into more of a carrot cake aroma. This is what leads me to believe its a combo of the dry ingredients that gave it the bad smell.

Thankfully the taste is completely different, it’s surprisingly good nice and sweet, initially I can really taste the carrot and it quickly disappears and I am left with a lingering creamy sweetness. Not exactly how I remember my grandma and mom’s carrot cake as a kid but not too shabby for a tea. I think this one would probably make an awesome latte.

A little slice of delicious in a cup.

So this tea was given to me as a gift with the knowledge of my enjoyment of dessert teas. And it certainly ranks up there with some of my tasty tea’s; however it takes a hit as I prefer this tea as a latte more then a straight tea as it ends up really tasting like cake.

Dry this tea has a wonderful chocolate and carob aroma to it, and it certainly looks like the beginnings of cake batter with all the sprinkles and chocolate pieces.

Steeped the tea takes on a more pronounced carob aroma but is still quite pleasing. It becomes a very dirty and murky tea, I suspect this is the sprinkles as Red Velvet Cake does the exact same thing. Takes pretty good by itself, but it really comes to life with some milk or done as a latte.

drank Long Life Oolong by DAVIDsTEA

I still think they need to change the name to Life Long Oolong, but eh that’s just me! This however is by far my current favorite Oolong to drink it just tastes great, will certainly keep tons on hand.

Dry this tea has a pleasant peach and apricot smell that is honestly fantastic, it is also a tin full of colors with all the fruit pieces, the tea leaves and safflower pieces, all topped off with pieces of white almonds. Steeping the tea will release a pleasant peach aroma throughout the room.

The final brew is golden yellow in color and peachy in aroma. It has a smooth creamy taste accompanied by a nice peach flavor, followed up with a sweet after taste. Only downside is this tea is only good for one infusion, I tried a second infusion on a cup last night and it was certainly not as nice to drink.

Tea, Earl Grey, Hot!

I will attempt to taste and comment on each and every blend offered from DAVIDsTEA and of course anything else that comes across my path.

I only drink tea brewed from loose leaf tea, and tend to sweeten my teas with a teaspoon of raw cane sugar per 8oz of tea and consider a cup either 12oz or 16oz depending on what mug I want to use.

I generally do not put milk in my tea’s; however sometimes I may make a ‘London Fog’ style drink or add milk to herbal infusions to add a bit more creaminess to it.

And I generally enjoy drink a nice hot tea while relaxing listening to some Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd.

I am quite liberal with my Tea ratings, I take the smiley face to heart for judging. If I really like it then it will score a high grade regardless of the brand or if I can keep it in my cupboard or not. But to break it down further a bit more check this out:

0-10 – Wouldn’t drink it if I was dying.
10-20 – Are you sure this didn’t come out of a bag?
20-50 – There is hope for this tea…somewhere but not here
50-60 – Drinkable, but not stockable
60-70 – Ok, were onto something here!
70-80 – Wow you gotta try this
80+ I freaking love it, where can I buy it?
