This tea is nothing special, but if you like to go through a lot of sweet tea this is a pretty economical way to do so.

The first time I made this tea I brewed it for 5 minutes and found it really bitter, astringent, and just unrefreshing. Even at three minutes it’s a bit more bitter than I feel it should be, but a friend of mine gave me a trick for fixing this in cheap tea : add a pinch of baking powder.

I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who wants to drink unsweetened iced tea as the flavor is pretty bland and bitter, but if you want to make sweet tea on the cheap and keep some baking powder at hand this tea will do fine.

As a lover of all the ingredients in this herbal infusion I was stoked to happen upon this on the grocery store shelf. Tasting this tea did not disappoint — lots of licorice flavoring with an undercurrent of chamomile and marshmallow.

However, I will warn anyone who doesn’t know about the side effects of real licorice root: hypertension and edema are rather common with even moderate consumption. This tea has enough in it that after 3 nights of drinking this before bedtime I found myself with bad hypertension for about 4 hours despite no history of it.

So, if the flavors appeal to you go for it, but know what you could be getting yourself into.

I don’t pay too much attention to the number scores I give teas — they’re just an approximation of my feelings on them, so if you really want you know what I thought you’ll need to read the whole, longwinded tasting note.
