drank Jolly Jellybean by DAVIDsTEA

Had this in-store as well today, and wow! It tasted a fair bit better than when I brewed it myself. There was much more pineapple/strawberry flavour. I suspect this might have been due to a lack of pineapple chunks in my bag of tea in spite of the jellybeans that I did get. So I’m kind of excited to try this one again :) I think it’s better than Swampwater, which it is definitely most reminiscent of.

Ick. Tried this as a TOTD today and definitely not impressed, but I dislike peppermint teas, so no surprise there! So I won’t be a jerk and rate this, which would bring down the rating (since I’d probably give it a 20 or so). Just tasted like any old icky peppermint tea to me. On the plus side, I sniffed the Spearmint tea and boy, does it ever smell good! It’s now on the sample-purchase list :)

Daisy Chubb

The Spearmint tea is much less harsh, it’s nice and sweet and you’ll love it compared to this one I bet!

Kittenna

I’m hoping so – it did smell quite good! I’m the same way about gum too; dislike peppermint but love spearmint (and wintermint/freshmint).

ScottTeaMan

K….I like all the mints you mention, but isn’t it funny, i am just the opposite when it comes to peppermint & spearmint issue. :))

Kittenna

Given the relative abundance of pepperminty things compared to spearmint, I would have to guess that most of the world is more like you, ScottTeaMan.

drank Happy Kombucha by DAVIDsTEA

Ok, so this tea is currently making a strong case for user error being the reason I didn’t like it the first time. It still smells the same, delicious and fruity, but wow does it ever taste better. I taste some fruitiness (pineapple is coming to mind), and am pretty sure I’m picking up on some oolong base. No weird chemically flavour whatsoever.

I’m still not sure that it’s a tea I’d pick up again, but it’s moved away from a tea I wanted to get rid of to one I’ll be happy enough drinking until the bag is done. Which is good. Overall, not a bad fruity oolong. Probably most similar to Long Life Oolong, which I’m also having trouble properly reviewing!

Blame it on a full moon. (I was going to use an old song lyric “blame it on the bosa nova” but noone is old enough to know what that song was). One day a tea is fantastic and another day…eh…what did I see in it. People can be that way too. That’s a good reason to give people another chance just like we do tea.

Kittenna

You’re right, never heard of that song! I’ve definitely noticed that teas are more/less appealing to me when I try them at different times. With the flavoured teas I blame either user error or a different ratio of ingredients, and with unflavoured teas it’s usually user error. Although difficult to tell which time there was an error! In this case (with Happy Kombucha), I’m pretty sure I used a steeping temperature that was way off the first time.

drank Mulberry Magic by DAVIDsTEA

This is hitting the spot perfectly tonight. I’m all sick and whiny with a sore throat, and was having trouble figuring out what sort of drink I wanted (I find many drinks don’t help but hurt a sore throat). The sweet teas I’ve brewed tonight are mostly for my visiting boyfriend, but this one is all for me. I’m craving a vegetal, not sweet, completely astringency-free tea, so Mulberry Magic is perfect. Iced Bear Trap actually sounds really appealing right now too, although I’m pretty sure I’m either out of that or very nearly.

drank Amaretto by DAVIDsTEA

I was curious as to how this stacked up to Alpine Punch, which is also so amaretto-y. Had to wait quite a while though, as my local DT was out of stock FOREVER (ok… maybe a month or so).

The dry tea/tisane stuff (what do you call a dry tisane? Mix? Hrm.) is quite interesting to look at. Definitely reminds me of a bark mulch, with some added almonds thrown in, of course! The smell is overwhelmingly of amaretto, even moreso than Alpine Punch.

Steeped, it still smells like sweet, sweet amaretto. Yum. And that’s how it tastes, too, although thankfully the sweetness isn’t quite as strong as marzipan or I’d be gagging a bit. I can’t really identify anything other than that amaretto/marzipan flavour, but wouldn’t know what to look for in terms of tasting the lapacho bark anyhow.

The biggest difference I’m noticing between this and Alpine Punch is that it seems thinner somehow, and perhaps a bit less complex, which may not be surprising given that I think Alpine Punch contains a more varied collection of ingredients. So for a dessert tea, I think my selection would stray from this one, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with it. I can definitely see some enterprising people thinking up some neat recipes that use the tasty liquor though!

ETA: This does NOT re-steep well at all. Pretty much zero flavour on the re-steep. Definitely sticking with Alpine Punch.

drank Gold Rush by DAVIDsTEA

Alas, my third and final cup (from a 14g bag). Yes, I use more tea than is perhaps required, but those mulberries are heavy too! Will have to go shopping for this and a select few others soon!

Just steeped it directly in the mug, since I know it doesn’t oversteep and I’m too lazy to try for more than one steep tonight. And I want to eat those mulberries!! :D

Delicious.

Not bad, tastes like a less-weird version of Swampwater in my opinion! I was apparently one of the lucky ones that got 4 jellybeans in a 16g bag, so I made sure to steep one in my cup this evening.

The dry tea smells vanilla-y and fruity, but with less guava scent than Swampwater. And taste-wise it is very much the same; I don’t think the jellybean added much. Perhaps it also depends on which flavour you get – it was a red one in this cup. The bag contains two more red ones and a pear one (which I just ate… heehee :D)

So nothing objectionable, but in the dessert rooibos department I still lean towards Alpine Punch :)

drank Hot Lips (Organic) by DAVIDsTEA

Ok, here goes my second shot at Hot Lips. Steeping parameters pretty much exactly what is recommended, so I shouldn’t have done anything wrong there.

The smell is still nearly exactly like cinnamon hearts. SO delicious.

And… yay! Much better this time around! Sweet and cinnamony with a bit of heat at the end. No cardboard taste this time. I still prefer Glitter & Gold, but am no longer dreading finishing off the 20g of this I purchased.

drank Daydreamer by DAVIDsTEA

So I guess I deserve this for brewing five cups of tea simultaneously…. set the timer for 3 minutes, and took out a tea ball right when it went off….. but it was not the right cup. I took out the re-steeping banana oolong teaball, not this one. I should mention that the only reason I’m brewing so much is because my boyfriend is visiting and since I’m trying to get him to drink tea, letting him sample whatever he wants from my cupboard is the way to go :) So tonight it’s re-steeps of Banana Oolong (#3), Alpine Punch (#3), Pom Power (#2), and first steepings of Daydreamer and Paradise Found. Plus something else later, most likely.

Anyhow, I digress. In spite of the MASSIVE oversteeping, I think I may not have ruined this tea! The brewed liquid smells fruity and tasty, and I am actually concerned that the tea tastes too weak, instead of oversteeped, and there’s no bitterness. I find this odd, given that it’s a sencha??? Sencha Pear oversteeped for me in a heartbeat.

Anyways, I’ll definitely have to try this one again done properly, but for now I’m kind of excited :)

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
