I’m terribly hungover from New Years festivities so naturally turned to a tea sample that I knew would taste the closest to a fruity wine. I’m a glutton for punishment. I was lying down while drinking this (may or may not affect the taste/my general authority). The predominant flavors are grape and strawberry. Super smooth and flavorful. Would recommend for those looking to purge their bodies of the sins from nights past.

The jasmine + chestnut combo initially made me do a double take, but wooweewow this is so good! The dry leaf smells amazing. This is exactly what I think Santa would smell like- earthy but almost cloyingly sweet. When brewed it’s creamy and sweet but still maintains the nice overarching jasmine flavor. Lovely white tea that doesn’t whimp out on the flavor.

drank Cream of Earl Grey by Tea Sparrow

I couldn’t find a separate listing for this tea or any others from this company so thought I’d throw my thoughts here.

This tea is delicious! I prefer drinking earl grey mixes with an element of sweetness or cream because it balances out the astringency of the bergamot. The best way I can describe the taste is clean but creamy. Smells and tastes super fresh. Didn’t have to use a ton of leaf to get a really nice flavor from it. Wonderful with some milk added. I’ll be sad when this pouch is done.

drank Vanilla Cacao by Tisano

Tea sparrow came THROUGH this month! I absolutely love my subscription I could talk about it all day. It’s affordable, their customer service is awesome, and I’ve never been disappointed by the selections I’ve received. It also helps stave off more tea spending when I know I’m getting four new teas a month to try out. This month in particular has teas that are savory/creamy which is perfect for the holidays.

I’ve never had a tea that’s mainly cacao shell and I have to say I really enjoyed this! The smell and taste reminds me so much of chocolate malt-o-meal it’s uncanny. I ate it every day of my childhood and this really takes me back. If you’re unfamiliar malt-o-meal is a hot wheat cereal in a few flavors- chocolate being the clear winner taste-wise. The rooibos in the blend gives the cacao a woody background note that makes it taste identical to it. It’s a rich, wheaty chocolate drink without the sweetness of a hot chocolate. Certainly not something I’d reach for every day but the nostalgia factor may very well make this a re-purchase.

I don’t drink hot chocolate too often given that it’s overwhelmingly sweet, but this is the perfect balance for me. It is insanely good and offers a different take on the traditional chocolate tea with the addition of the earthy notes from the pu’erh. This would be a nice gateway tea for someone that is interested in trying pu’erh but doesn’t want to go the full monty. It’s present here but not despotic.

I was really impressed by the dry blend as well. Smells absolutely delicious and it has THREE sources of solid chocolate in it (chips, curls, nibs). I found myself babysitting the filter more trying to get as much of it to melt as I could but it’s worth the effort. Beautiful with some milk added.

drank Jasmin Mandarin by Lupicia

I’m on en epic mission to pare down my massive tea collection because the great majority of it is going stale- sad face. Once I get my collection under control I can start buying controlled amounts of more again- happy face.

Got this as a sample in the Lupicia catalog. Jasmine is overall my favorite type of tea so I was pumped for this one. It’s a nice jasmine but I’m not tasting anything in the way of other flavorings besides well, jasmine. I was expecting orange as in mandarin orange, but then I realized they probably just mean this is a Chinese jasmine tea. As a standalone jasmine it’s flavorful and fresh but didn’t convince to to switch from my go-to for this one.

drank Melon Drop by DAVIDsTEA

The amount I got of this in a sample package was paltry compared to how much I would normally steep for a cup with chunky blends but thought I’d give this a fair shot anyways. The mix of kiwi and melon gives it more of a candy taste than a refreshing fruity one. It’s veering towards the body wash and/or candle taste territory. Pretty unremarkable and I don’t think I’d drink this again.

This tea dries my mouth out in a weird way and I suspect it’s due to the artificial flavorings. As far as the taste goes it’s floral and fruity, but somehow still too light for me even as a white tea. Getting a lot of grape from this. Might make for a good subtle iced tea but otherwise this isn’t doing it for me.

drank Earl Grey Lavender by Rishi Tea

After a long day at the Chinese consulate waiting on visa paperwork I came home and put the kettle on to give this one a go. Brewed it up with some honey and milk. I don’t know if it’s the exhaustion from finals week talking but this is one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth.

I don’t usually enjoy earl grey blends but the lavender calms down the bergamot. It has much less of a citrus bite which makes it a silky smooth tea. If you dig floral notes this is the one for you. Delicious!

This smells incredibly like fresh blueberries with a sweet note from the chocolate. I wanted to eat it right out of the bag! Brewed up it tastes just like a chocolate covered blueberry. This is delicious and takes sweetener well.
