1403 Tasting Notes

I cracked open the brand new sampler pouch that I had been saving for a day exactly like today.

Man, is it flipping’ cold out there. 30 below zero with the windchill and prediction of 35 overnight to be exact. And every single bus or streetcar that I was waiting for was at least a 30 minute wait for each one to arrive.

My hands and thighs and toes are still defrosting and I am delighted that my nose is still attached to my face.

The tea is smoky peach deliciousness and once I was able to board a vehicle once it finally got there and my hands warmed sufficiently that I could open the screw top of my carry mug, I was over the moon to have had this with me.

Smoky sweetness on a black base is such a great thing to have on such a deeply frigid day.

Tea sounds great… The 30 below doesn’t :(. Stay safe!

Leafhopper

Buses do seem to be super late on cold days. Keep warm!

Evol Ving Ness

Thanks all, somehow I survived. We all did, as far as I know. But damn it was cold. However, on the most frigid days, the air and light is so bright, like crystal, so when you are walking in the daytime, everything, no matter how mundane, is sparklingly beautiful. So there is the pleasure of that.

Back to black.

And yay, this is a solid cup of banana, coconut cream, and malt. Super fab.
But it is so cold near the windows, deep chill. The only hope is to go out while the sun is still shining.

This will be the second day sipping on this loveliness. The Bai Mu Dan base is super awesome and the delicate pineapple and Angel Food Cream cake overlay is an ideal accompaniment.

I am not a huge white tea fan but this here is the business: gentle but full flavours with a hint of sweetness. A bit of a celestial cloud this tea is.

I will mention here that I reached for this tea first thing upon waking, a white tea first for me who usually wakes with black or oolong and sometimes green. And this on a day that I am already exhausted and feeling poorly but will be looking forward to a good bit of shovelling the thigh high white fluff outside. So yeah, this.

tea-sipper

Yeah, I was tired today but DIDN’T have a black tea this morning. Seeing that pale brew early in the morning was a very different experience. haha Hopefully the shoveling isn’t too bad… but you said thigh high. oh crap.

Evol Ving Ness

Thanks, tea-sipper. The snow was dense but relatively light, so not as laborious as it appeared. But yeah, thigh-high, but it has stopped snowing for now, so yay! The parts that had been shovelled look as if the excess has been sliced away. Love that look.

tea-sipper

Yeah, but the snow would be more interesting if it wouldn’t stay around for half the year (ick, I just reminded myself that.)

Evol Ving Ness

hahahhaa, tough call. I’ll take the snow over the humidity torment though.

Ooooooh, YUM!

For some reason, I remembered it as Coconut Caribana—-hahhahhahhaha, yeah, well.

Anyway, creamy, coconut, floral, and delicious.

Yes, it was exactly this tea that I was drinking yesterday. The coconut added the silky cream element to the pineapple and smooth white base. The kumquat was missing entirely in this spoon of leaf. So was the ginger in the hot steep.

However, the ginger came out rather feistily after a night cold steeping.

I hadn’t really expected much from this blend, but it was a fine one.

tea-sipper

What fickle blend. :D

Evol Ving Ness

Maybe it was my tastebuds that were fickle. Half of the people I know have that killer flu going around and I fear I may be next on the list.

This could well be the one I am drinking at the moment. And if so, it is very delicious :)

When I opened the packet, I was worried about the coconut. Will this be the first and only blend of Anne’s in which the coconut has gone off? Nope, it is perfectly fine.

On my third steep and then added cold water to the leaves to see what comes of it overnight.

White tea is not my usual go-to, but when I do get around to it, I enjoy it immensely.

tea-sipper

Aw, this tea is from 2016 and your tasting note is the first. I actually thought this was a new tea, so I had to go over and look.

YASSSSSS, Leafhopper, you are a superstar.

Now if I could only remember what I was planning on saying about this one.

Oooooh, yes. I have found that this is a serviceable travel tea that handles travel mug treatment reasonably well with even the occasional creamy fizzy sip of ice cream melting in a soda. And the root beer is spot on. And the base is perfection for this blend.

This is not an absolute favourite, but it is damn fine masterful blending, nonetheless.

Note to self—-you do not actually need any more tea.

My real tea obsession began in February 2015.

Not, sadly, when I had been living and working in China, though I very much enjoyed sampling a variety of teas during my travels there as well. No, no, that would have been far too sensible.

I am a reformed coffee drinker. I still enjoy a long double espresso with a good quantity or milk or cream from time to time, but for now, tea is my thing. All day.

*note—this is way out of date, so if we are doing a swap and you are checking to see what I like and dislike, mostly never mind what you find below. One of these days, I will update this. In the meantime, check what I’ve been drinking and use your own judgement. I like all the teas. Well, I am open to trying all the teas.

I tend to drink black, green, or oolong tea in the morning to early afternoon. Rooibos or
Honeybush or herbal in the evening. And perhaps some sort of sleepy-type tea in the wee hours.

This year, I’ve been discovering flavoured teas, so it may look like that is all I drink although that would provide a false impression.

Not a big fan of chocolate or mint in teas, but I will try them and, from time to time, have been pleasantly surprised. Also, usually I dislike a prominent cinnamon flavour, if untempered with other things, in teas. Again, I say usually, because there are exceptions.

Also, please note that haven’t quite gotten into the habit of updating my tea cupboard on Steepster, and it is unlikely that I will do this on any kind of regular basis.

I drink my tea black and unsweetened. If there comes a rare moment that I add something to it, I will mention it.

Finally, while I thank large and successful tea companies for tantalizing and beckoning me to the world of tea, I prefer to support independent ventures with real people, real enthusiasm and commitment, and real dreams.

Currently, I am researching monthly tea subscriptions. Perhaps it will keep me out of tea shops.

And here is Shae’s rating scale— which I am using with permission, of course— which more or less describes the way I have been rating teas. I am going to make more of an effort to stay very close to these parameters now.

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-40: This tea is not good but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

41-60: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

61-75: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

76-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.

Mostly, but not always, Toronto, Canada.
