drank Mango Fruit Punch by DAVIDsTEA

Trying this from a sample. The sample size was not enough to actually make 16 oz of tea as indicated on the package, but I always attempt it that way first to get an idea of how much tea I’ll really need to use each time to get the intended effect. I think this one will need one heaping Perfect Spoon per 16 oz and 10+ minutes of steep time.

After the extra steep time for the sample, I was able to get decent mango flavor out of this and could taste the pineapple and tangerine as well. I had a hard time picking up on the strawberries. I can definitely see this being a yummy iced tea for summer (but would probably do a long overnight cold brew versus trying to use enough tea and enough time to make a strong enough brew to ice on the spot.)

drank Moringa Mermaid by DAVIDsTEA

Trying my sample of this before I make my first purchases of the summer collection. As a side note for all 3 of the new summer teas I tried (this, Mango Fruit Punch, and Rhubarb Cream Soda), they all tasted better after an extra 5+ minutes of steeping. I don’t think the sample packets are ever quite enough to truly make a good-tasting 16 oz. cup of tea.

Anyway, after my initial steep of 5 1/2 minutes (right in the middle of suggested range of 4-7 minutes), this tea was pretty “meh.” It smelled SO good, very melon-y, in the package. But the melon favor was very diminished in the tea. The brewed tea definitely has that deeper, almost pungent scent of cantaloupe. The melon scent combined with what I assume is the moringa (mildly seaweed-y?) made this smell like an all-natural beauty spa or lotion or something.

I steeped another 10 minutes and after that, the melon flavor started to come out more. I think if you could get this strong enough, it probably would taste really good iced with a few chunks of melon and a little lime in it to bring out the flavors better.

The sample packets seem to be enough for other types just not for fruity herbals or heavy weight teas.

I’m not far enough into my cup to assess whether this tea will have the desired effect, but I like the taste. I find it to be very smooth and mild—it goes down easy. I just left my teabag in my cup since it calls for a 10-15 minute steep. I’m about at that point and it still tastes nice to me. And maybe it is actually making me sleepy already, because I find that I’m out of thoughts on this one! I might try again tomorrow night earlier in the evening to see if it has a similar effect or if I’m just getting tired because it’s late. :)

drank White Ayurvedic Chai by Teavana

I tried this for the first time this morning. It was from a very old sample (a few years?) that was still totally sealed in the back of my cupboard, but I still wonder if the age effected the taste. I do not taste even one bit of pineapple or coconut. All I’m getting is chai and a bit of the underlying white tea. The cinnamon and cardamom kind of overpower everything else. Luckily I like those flavors, so it was still drinkable. But I could see this being really delicious if the pineapple and coconut notes were there. Will have to try again with maybe more tea or a slightly longer brew time to see if that makes a difference.

I’m surprised at how much I ended up liking this one! I wouldn’t usually choose an outright mint tea, though I don’t mind mint as an ingredient in the teas I choose. So I chose this as a sample on a whim. The scent of the dry tea reminded me a lot of Winterfresh gum, in a pleasant way: cool and minty with a hint of spice.

I’ve already poured my second cup before I even got far enough to talk about how it tastes! Again, surprising to me for a mint tea. Anyway, I feel like I get 3 distinct layers of flavor, and each seems to sneak up on the previous. The first is, as expected, mint. This quickly gives way to spice and the black pepper effect really stands out here—it’s a great little kick. I get a hint of the fennel, too.

The part that intrigued me was the very end, right after swallowing the tea, this sweetness crept up, presumably from the licorice root. It lingers for a few seconds along the with the lasting spiciness of the black pepper and has a really neat effect. I usually drink most teas, especially non-fruit teas, sweetened with something. But this really didn’t need it as that licorice root kicked in.

I added a spoonful of honey to my last cup out of my sample batch and, while I think this honestly would make it too sweet for many people, it officially knocked this tea out of the park for me. Having that warm sweetness from the start to accompany those spice notes is just really nice. Yum!

drank Earl Grey Creme by Teavana

This is the first and only “creme” earl grey that I’ve tried. I’m not sure what exactly gives it that creamy taste (vanilla?), but it’s certainly there when compared to the regular earl greys I’ve had. I find that this is a gentler flavor for first thing in the morning whereas regular earl grey can feel a bit too acidic. There’s a definite floral note, but it’s not overpowering. And the amount of bergamot was just right for my taste.

I noticed a number of other reviewers noted that this tea is best as a “mixer” with other teas. My earl grey palate must be unrefined because I think it’s good the way it is, but I do see that it could be complimented nicely by a tea with stronger vanilla notes.

drank Glitter & Gold by DAVIDsTEA

I’ve had this tea for a few weeks now and have had 4-5 cups. Upon reviewing the ingredient list today, I was surprised to see/recall that there is lemon peel and that it’s the 2nd ingredient. I get little-to-no hit of lemon in this tea. Now that I know it’s supposed to be a flavor note, I will try adding a slice of lemon next time to enhance it a bit. It’s much heavier on the cloves and some sort of artificial flavor that I can’t quite put my finger on but that seems to give it a “creamy” taste.

I don’t love this tea but I have found myself instinctively reaching for it when I want a simple black tea to guzzle down in the morning to get my energy up before I reach for one of my better herbals or greens. Won’t buy again but probably won’t have trouble getting through my 4 oz in a reasonable amount of time.

drank Chai Love by Tiesta Tea

The first time I tried this chai, it was a bit lackluster. It definitely needed no less than the suggested 1.5 tsp per 8 oz and probably closer to the high end of the steeping range. I tried it again as a latte using double the suggested amount of tea (so 3 tsp per 8 oz) and a 4 minute steep and it was much better. It has a good amount of spice and was perfectly enhanced by a bit of cinnamon sprinkled over the top. The scent of the tea in the package was heavy on cloves, but that flavor was mellowed out in drinking. The caffeine kick was perfect for a Monday morning, too.
