get ready… tons of accounts are being created

Wow, great call.

apt said

these new accounts are being created nonstop….maybe the admins should consider halting registration or maybe implementing an extra layer of security…

Are they bots? If so additional security features might do the trick.

Some way to prove you’re a tea liking human.

is that why steepster is being screwy for me tonight because so many spammer trying join at one time or something? I’m not able to do very much here at the moment, i hope this comment goes through

Jason, I would highly recommend implementing both a captcha as well as email verification link. I would bet that if you put both of those up you would see a HUGE drop in spam accounts.

We’ve recently implemented a couple more features to try and stop the spammers. It seems to be helping somewhat with the ones who are posting in the discussions, but not really doing much for the ones creating accounts. We may have to look into a more drastic solution like a captcha, but would like to avoid it if possible because it obviously not a great signup experience. Will keep you guys posted.

Personally, I have never had a problem with having a captcha when creating an account. If it keeps the spammers down, it’s a good idea.

apt said

captchas never bothered me.

I can’t even imagine how many spam accounts are being created…if you go to Explore, there’s at least a couple a minute from the looks of it…Also, now that Steepster has a store, I think reducing the amount of spam using some method to reduce fake accounts to begin with would be a good business move. Less clutter and fake reviews will definitely make Steepster look better as a business.

Surprisingly, the ones that are joining really frequently aren’t the ones that are posting the spam content, they’re just making a lot of accounts.

Wow watching that feed now, it’s crazy.

apt said

maybe some sort of denial of service attack? maybe they’re planning on bombarding us with spam all at once?

Can you block the IP?

apt said

I’m sure they’re using several IPs

Jason select said

We have a few different measures in place (which I won’t go into detail here) but they clearly aren’t fully shutting them down. Will have to keep addressing.

Uniquity said

Huh. They seem to be joining about one a minute right now. I don’t want to seem ungrateful but the spam attacks are making it really hard to use the forum, especially since threads I haven’t read yet keep being un-highlighted when the (I assume) spam notes are removed. I know it sucks for you too!

I just got a new follower named “JUAL SOLAHART 081284559855”….yeah because that sounds legit. _

There also seems to be a few spammer entries on the Tea Companies page.

I’m showing a bunch of spam tasting notes too…

Cleared out the latest batch. Sorry everyone, thanks for being so patient.

Please don’t think we are complaining, we are just trying to keep the baddies out.

Jason select said

No worries at all, I never take it as complaining! I’m just glad you guys have been so patient with it.
