The discussion section is becoming unusable
I sometimes enjoy going through the discussion section to see what people are talking about, but for a while now, all I’ve been seeing are years-old posts with new content that’s been posted hours ago and then deleted. We’ve had a problem with spam for as long as Steepster’s been active, but this is ridiculous. I can’t even see the advent calendar post because of the spam.
There’s probably no easy solution to this because I’ve heard Adagio is responsible. However, could the mods lock discussions after three or six months of inactivity, or maybe create another subforum with no old posts so we can see our new discussions there?
Yyyyup.
Unfortunately, ‘moderator’ is a bit of a misnomer. Really the only power the admins gave us was the ability to ban accounts younger than a certain cutoff-date, to help with spam. So we can’t delete topics, or re-arrange the forums. When Adagio took over, there was an attempt to try and instate proper moderator-powers, but it got largely got ignored.
My (bandaid) solution has been to set Sort by: to ‘Date Posted’ instead. But this also sorts out the few long-running topics, like Sipdown.
I’ve been getting back-to-back 504 errors, so looks like Steepster’s being hit pretty bad by bots. Whether they make it all the way in or not.
That’s very frustrating. I’m not sure why Adagio won’t grant you more authority if they’re not interested in managing the site themselves.
I’ll try sorting the discussions that way and see if it makes a difference.
Do you think bot attacks are responsible for the recent weeks-long Steepster freeze?
My understanding is that Adagio is picking certain keywords in discussions and causing them to link to their website. Every time they add new keywords, any discussions using them move to the top of the list. It’s definitely annoying, but should be something that doesn’t last forever.
That’s annoying, but I agree it should be temporary. However, it feels like this has been going on for a while.
Aaah, you’re absolutely right. I was wondering how we were somehow being inundated with necro-threads, but the bots I assumed were reviving them were getting deleted by the masses before I could even see them.
This necro-ing has definitely been going on the past couple of weeks, at least. But yeah, at the time I’d noticed the keyword-links, but thought maybe they’d been added a while back and I just hadn’t noticed.
Now I’m just annoyed. This wraps back around to the Active Vendors on Steepster having their product-pages linking to Adagio’s “related” products instead of their own, and mods not being allowed to change it.
