The storage method of pu 'er tea

I was wondering if loose leaf Pu’erh tea could be stored in a turned lidded wooden vessel?

I assume that it would take on the flavour just as wine or cognac would, the term would be about five to ten years.

Are there any proposed detrimental effects of this storage method?

As long as you don’t mind the taste of the wood it should be fine! I personally wouldn’t do it but I believe Liquidproust has done something similar with used rum barrels

If it took on enough wood flavor the effect wouldn’t be that different than just brewing sawdust. Different wood types are more or less aromatic; I’d imagine the more neutral types would contribute a lot less.

How this relates to other forms of storage in regards to enabling or suppressing fermentation is a different question. It would seem to depend on how well the container sealed. I would assume a tight-fitted wood vessel that isn’t opened very often would limit air contact quite a bit, and I’d expect the tea to just not change much then, isolated from almost all exposure to outside air. Instead of a conventional transition related to aging—softening in flavor, bitterness transitioning to aromatic aspects, flavor aspects shifting towards milder, sweeter, and richer aspects—it would just taste more like wood. According to a friend’s input that’s embraced related to cigars, picking up aromatic wood aspects, but it doesn’t even come up much as a question related to tea. There would seem to be some positive potential there, although ten years would seem like a long wait for a transition of that form.

LP did some Rummy PU, stored in an old rum barrel. It took the flavor quite well.

When I was starting out with Puerh, I stored my tea for about a year in a wooden crate that Bordeaux had come in. It wasn’t close to airtight, and was 20 years old. I didn’t notice any effect from the wood, but suspect that was due to the age; any volatiles would have already evaporated.
