As usual, a friend brought me some tea, this time Pi Lo Chun, directly from China, bought from an estate representative.

The first steeping was subtle, a light and aromatic taste that gently lingered on the palette, delighting not only the tongue, but the nose as well. This experience, perhaps the defining aspect of the tea so far, seemed to last forever. Quite an accomplishment. This fine and gentle experience was a perfect pair with the Sun’s breaking light across my view this morning.

Second steeping yielded a heavier bottom note, a more earthy and grassy scent and taste, and a fuller mouth feel. Still yet, the tea remained on the palette for an exceptionally long time. By about half way through the second cup this tea really starts growing on you.

The thing I liked the most was its ability to create a lingering taste and aroma that seemed to last forever. I would use the tea again. Although not a strongly flavored tea, its subtleties and pleasantries make it a perfect lighter green with a good balance for any time of day.

a decent tea :D

this one came in a white wrapper with a red dot and white letters and a red ring with red flowers on it. however, there are no flowers in the tea.

when i smell the leaves dry, they smell musty.

when i smell the leaves wet, they smell nice and earthy.

when i smell the brewed tea, it smells earthy.

when i taste the brewed tea, it tastes earthy with a sweet metallic aftertaste.

i rate this a 75 because of the metallic taste.

an amazing tea!

this one comes in a white wrapper with light peach color at the very back and a green dot on the top with white letters.

when i looked at the leaves/wrapper i thought it was a sheng., but it turned out to be a shou.

when i smell the leaves dry, they smell musty.

when i smell the leaves wet. it smells like a sheng mixed with shou.

when i smell the brewed tea, i smell earth and sweetness.

when i taste the brewed tea it has amazing sweetness and earthy taste!

i rate this a 100 even tho its from the pack from ali express and is low quality and cheap. it just tastes too amazing and reopened my interest in shou.

an awesome tea!

this tea came in a white wrapper with a orangish peach circle on top with white letters.

when i smell the leaves dry, they smell musty.

when i smell the leaves wet, i smell a fishy smell (which i don’t mind).

when i smell the brewed tea, i smell a fishy smell and some earth.

when i taste the brewed tea, there is no fishy smell. however, there is a sweet earthy taste.

i noticed green stem like particles included in the leaves. maybe this is ginseng or green tea? i don’t know.

i rate this tea a 100 because even though its cheap (came included with the $1.50 order from aliexpress), and its low quality, its still amazing. if you can find this tea, i suggest you try it

Sooo got an once of this tea from the farmer’s market trip with my family a couple months back, I think in April it was? Not entirely sure.
There was only ONE tea shop in the entire Farmer’s Market, and I didn’t even go there for tea in the first place. I heard there was boba there, so I went. And then they ended up not having it, sooo I just decided to get a couple teas. Most of them were over-priced, but this one wasn’t too bad and apparently it was one of the most popular blends. It was a jasmine/rose/vanilla blend. Soo I was interested.
It’s definitely flowery. Like really flowery. I taste a little jasmine but it’s mostly rose flavor and other flowery flavors. Also a pretty strong vanilla flavor in there. It’s a really odd blend. I think that if the flowery flavors were toned down a bit I’d like it more, but for me it’s too much. Just like Rivendell From WP was. If you like That tea, you would probably really like this blend. Sent some to a couple tea buddies already, well actually just one. Still need to write Albertocanfly back so I can officially send her tea package. Hopefully she will like it. I’m really curious to hear her thoughts.
It’s not the worse tea I’ve ever had, but not my favorite. Too much flower power in this tea. D:

I love my tiger, made a video about him in action, hope its ok if i share it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t5erYpg0Fc
As you can see it changes dramatically! It is certainly the centerpiece of my tea tray and my favorite companion. Bought it at our local chinatown here in Costa Rica, and of all my tea pets, this one is my favorite, mainly because i’m a feline lover, Quality is superb, no apparent mold imperfections of any sort, a bit disappointed since i thought he was Zisha Yixing but turned out to be resin, so i recommend owning at least one yixing tea pet to raise it properly, since i don’t think this one will be properly raised being resine, other than that the quality is awesome and has way more features than a Zisha pet would have, it s heavy for its size and very detailed and above all, beautifully crafted, a gorgeous little sculpture that tea and cat lovers will find very attractive, he tiger in chinese culture represents life and embodies the drive to achieve and make progress, represents prowess, ferocity, beauty, and valor. That’s why he is on top of coins in this sculpture, it will take care of whats yours and be a watchful protector of those surrounding you. Apart of your particular beliefs it is nice to own a brave tiger to take care of you!, and this tea pet certainly accomplishes all that outstandingly. Super recommended!

This is my 50th Steepster review! WOOOO! fireworks

I decided to do something special and be somewhat of a pioneer. I haven’t seen any tea pets here on Steepster but since they’ve begun allowing reviews for teawares I figured I’d introduce one of mine and see if this flies. While it is not essential to making tea, it is definitely a tea accessory and is a product made specifically for use with tea, so hopefully this is acceptable.

I ordered this tiger tea pet from a site called AliExpress. It’s an online marketplace where many vendors from Asia sell their wares. I’ve named him Inaba and he is my third tea pet. For those of you unfamiliar with tea pets, they are more often used in Taiwanese Gongfu Cha than in Chinese. They are little companions that sit at the tea table for use when rinse water is poured out from the gaiwan and tasting cups. The rinse water is poured over the tea pet, and in the case of this type, it causes him to rapidly and dramatically change colors! It’s kind of showy and some find that it distracts from the appreciation of the tea, so it is not used by all Gongfu practitioners.

As for Inaba, he is my favorite tea pet so far for a few reasons. First, the dramatic color change is really wonderful to watch. The color changes instantly as you douse him with hot water, so it looks like you’re rinsing him clean, but the dark color only returns over a period of a minute or two so it slowly grows more dark. Second, he is the smallest tea pet I own now. He’s only about 4.5 inches long and 4 inches tall, so he fits very well on even my small personal sized Gongfu table.

He is climbing on a hill of money, so maybe he can bring you prosperity, fortune and good luck if you offer him some delicious tea! Hehe. ;3

All in all, I find this tea pet to be a charming addition to a Gongfu Tea Table. I like that the initial colors make it appear to be a solid colored statue. If you are serving guests, it may come as a surprise when you rinse him and he shows such vivid colors! Tea pets are definitely a fun conversation piece for tea gatherings and can be a nice icebreaker if you are serving new guests.

I’m going to rate this guy very highly but not perfect. If you look at him up close the detail on the painting can be a little off in some spots. That is the only aesthetic downside to him, but it is not really too noticeable and for the price these usually cost, it is totally acceptable to me.

If you are considering getting a tea pet, I highly recommend him, though there are so many types out there it may be your personal preference to get another type. If you are looking for one with a strong color change, however, this one is awesome, and as mentioned before, he is very compact and unobtrusive to the tea area.

He brings elegance and power to the tea table! Rawr!

yyz

He’s pretty cool! Which store did you get him at? I like this one as well, though I haven’t bought it yet. http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Porcelain-green-tea-pet-dragon-arts-gifts-feng-shui-dragon-Chinese-mascot-God-Zeng-with-special/526436_1480622114.html

Lion

That one is awesome! I love the color of the glaze. I have a yixing clay one as well that is a little dragon. Maybe I’ll review him here soon too!

I didn’t prepare it the recommended way because I wanted to see how it would taste on its own. Infused for 10 minutes. Resulting brew has a very thin mouth-feel. Dark chocolate taste slight bitter taste at the back of the throat.

As this tea is quite a dark/strongly fermented tea, I wondered what might happen if I added a little soy milk to it……
YUM. The sweet taste with the creaminess was amazing, so I made up a fresh cup, this time doubling the tea strength and mixing pretty much half and half with the milk, and I think I have a new favourite drink.

I absolutely adore this tea, bought on a whim to experiment with flavoured oolongs from a tiny shop in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
To me, it tastes simultaneously crisp and sweet, and the longer it’s steeped the more intense the sweetness and richness is. I’ve re-brewed the leaves up to three times and gotten a great flavour each time, but after that I find it loses it’s richness.

The last of the samples from allisontsui and unfortunately this one’s crushed too :( There are maybe a dozen discernible rolled leaves, stems and the rest dust. After rinsing and discarding some of the thin mush I wasn’t left with much material to brew with so I did a slightly longer steep than usual (for me) though not long enough to allow the fine bits of leaf to turn bitter.

It’s actually a very nice oolong. It feels very cool and marine like, not fishy or salty mind you, but like cool ocean air making its way through a dark evergreen forest. And theres a nice lingering cool and creamy aftertaste. Very pleasant indeed.

I love the tea name…Alishan…sounds so dreamy

After some fun experimenting with hazelnut this morning I was in the mood for a straight tea, though nothing too light so I opted for this over Ali Shan. Unfortunately like the Dong Ding this one was crushed in the mail, this one possibly in both it’s journey from Canada and from Taiwan as Allison mentioned something about the Oriental Beauty when I asked about the leaves in the Dong Ding. Makes me sad to see tea bag sized shreds in a loose leaf sample pouch, but it is what it is.

That being said I didn’t have high hopes, but this one surprised me, it was pretty pleasant cup and I was able to get a good second steep out of it. It had nice cool camphor notes in addition to the champagne and leather notes. It actually reminded me of what I first came to love about Oriental Beauty, was only missing butteryness. My only issue was all the floaty bits that weren’t caught by my mesh strainer that got astringent. But overall it was actually less dry and sour than some lose leaf Oriental Beauties I’ve had. I’m sure this is amazing when in whole leaf form. Thank you allisontsui for your generosity.

Okay I’m moving my tasting note over to the page Mercuryhime created to be more concise and deleting my old tasting note from 12 days ago. So sorry for the repost on your feed.

First a huge thank you to allisontsui for her generosity and hospitality in sharing three teas from Taiwan with several Formosa lovers on Steepster! This package arrived a couple days after I had gotten my samples from Nuvola and I had already brewed their delicious Dong Ding (review coming soon) so I opened this one first. Unfortunately I could tell just from feeling the 5 gram packet that the leaves were crushed. There were maybe half a dozen whole to partial pearls and quite a bit of dust, so sad it seems to have suffered the damage on its journey.

Still I treated the leaves with respect and brewed them gongfu being sure to put a fine mesh strainer over my cup, but even this let quite a bit of sediment through. Still the first cup was quite nice, it had somewhere between a woody to floral aroma, it was less charcoal and mineral than the orchid oolong I had been drinking earlier that day, but still had a nice light roast to it with some greener notes. Floral is what stood out to me the most, thought it wasn’t like a scented or intentionally floral blend, just very pleasant and soothing.

Unfortunately this first infusion was the only one worth drinking. It pains me to write this since the tea was given so generously, but try as I could to reinfuse this, no amount of temperature lowering or time adjusting could save these leaves from turning astringent. By the third infusion it was unpalatable and I had to pour it out :( Dong Ding/Tung Ting is a tea that in my limited experience (recent order from Nuvola, sample from Fong Mong and a wonderful yixing session at Essencha Tea House) has been a very unique, generous and forgiving tea.

I cannot speak to the quality of this tea before it was shipped, but I would urge everyone who swaps tea to package in a padded envelope or box where applicable as this one was rendered to bag quality. I will be trying the other samples this week and sending Allison some of my Dong Ding from Nuvola as well. I am glad I got one good cup out of this though.

I had this yesterday, but I think I used way too little leaf. I’ll have to do better next time before I rate this. I can’t really detect much of interest from these leaves, actually, but I’m hoping to be proved wrong next time I try this. The pouches were no doubt meant to be used all at once. I did discover one useful thing though. I have a bamboo lid that also acts as a stand for my strainer in between steeps. Last week, I had a really spicy chai and the spicy flavor soaked right into the porous bamboo. My second steep of this tea was quite cinnamon-y. At first I was impressed that this oolong could have such a natural cinnamon flavor. But I was suspicious because I did not taste spice of any sort in the first brewing. Then I made the connection. The wet steeper basket had spent a good hour or more soaking up the chai flavor from my bamboo lid. argh! How do I get the spicy flavor out! I need a stainless steel lid. :( On the plus side, cinnamon oolong is tasty!

Thanks for your generous sample Allison!

I’ve tried both lengthening and shortening the steeping time, and nothing seems to help. The base of black tea is positively blunt. This is labelled as an “aromatic black tea”, which I suppose is accurate – you can detect by smell that there must be other ingredients, but your taste buds are helpless to find them. Since I recently found a chocolate mint blend that I really enjoyed, I was looking for that same warmth, and was interested to see how it would combine with the lighter floral ingredients. But both chocolate and flowers seem to be present mainly on the label.

“Tea in the Sahara” has some lovely blends and a nice gimmick, but “Vivaldi” needs serious revision.

Beware the spicy salad! Holy smokes, dad! Your hot peppers are strong this year! whew! Now I wish I had a cup of iced tea instead of this tasty cup of hot tea. :( Luckily I had a cup of this before eating my dinner. I don’t think I could taste anything other than burning right now. :)

First of all, thank you Allison Tsui, for sharing this wonderful sample with me. It’s a tasty Oriental Beauty. The smell of the dry leaves had me expecting great things. It was roasty and fruity and yummy smelling. The dry leaf looks great too. I love the varied shapes and colors. Dark brown, rust red, fuzzy white. Lovely.

My first sip of this left an impression of wet cardboard with an underlying flavor of plum and honey. This sounds bad, but it’s really not. Upon further sipping, I’m also finding flavors of toasty autumn, like with many dark oolongs. A very tasty tea.

On a side note, I’ve been trying to drink my stash down so I have had no new notes of late. I also find myself constantly wanting a black tea. I need to order some because I seriously have none. Stash depleting time is seriously the worst time to discover a whole new love for a whole new tea. I need more tea parties.

Had a weekend with my friends this past weekend. Made many pots of tea in hopes of conversion. They are still addicted to coffee, and sadly non-reactive to my favorite oolong. They liked 52 Tea’s Neapolitan Honeybush though! I’m all out of that now. ah wells. They’ll never get me to drink coffee and beer so we are even. :)

Azzrian

Im sorry :( Im kinda alone in the tea world here too.

LiberTEAS

Yes, me too. My oldest daughter will drink peppermint tea on occasion. My youngest on the rarest of occasions will ask for a cup of tea but we’re talking maybe three or four times a year. My hubby tolerates my many incoming tea packages but has no interest in exploring the world of tea with me. I’m the tea weirdo in my family.

Azzrian

Hubby will taste tea now and then but only sits and shares tea with me once in a great while usually when I do a long session with pu-erh IF he likes the pu-erh at that time.
My daughter only will drink a few, – muscat oolong from lupicia and a couple others.
Only my daughter will even try matcha.
This is why we all have each other :)

Mercuryhime

It’s just nice to share something you love with people you care about, right? Seems like this love is something I’m destined to keep to myself. :)
I find the coffee habit so weird though. I went to college with these people and they never drank coffee then. It wasn’t until they started working full-time that something happened to them, and coffee became a necessity. I, on the other hand, drank tea all through college and drink even more tea today. What did I miss?

Azzrian

Nothing – I am sure they were drinking sub par coffee. I do love a GOOD coffee and I don’t mean starbucks but still you can’t miss what you never had nor do you need in your life.

Mercuryhime

True enough. :) I guess I’m just wondering what turned my friend from “Ew, coffee” to “Need coffee!!” To be honest, I think I could seriously get into coffee too except that the caffeine content is too high for me. The few times I’ve had GOOD coffee, I felt like I was going to die from convulsions. Even from Arabica beans, the supposedly gently caffeinated variety. :) …and I don’t drink alcohol because I get a pounding headache from half a bottle of beer. I have to explain why I’m not drinking every time I go out with new people. And I can’t drink soda or other carbonated beverages because they seriously hurt my tummy somehow. Also no milk cause lactose intolerant. No juice cause it’s too sweet. I don’t drink anything most other people like to drink! Just tea and water for me! I love being able to come to Steepster and talk to people about tea and be understood!

And to think, I never would have found this community if Teavana hadn’t absorbed SpecialTeas and forced me to look around for a new cheap source for my favorite chai. :) As Ma Ingalls used to say, “there’s no great loss without some small gain,” or something like that.

Wow, that’s a long reply. Spent too much time alone today. :D

Anywho! Any Steepsterite who comes to NYC can look me up and I’ll take you on a tea tour of the city!

Terri HarpLady

I also only drink tea & water. I’m allergic to dairy, can’t handle sugar, coffee bothers my kidneys, alcohol is a BIG no-no. But with tea, we have so many options, so I’m happy!

So I got a couple of sample packs of oolong from the generous Allison Tsui. Unfortunately, I don’t know if there’s a particular brand name or even what farm it may have come from. All I know is that it’s from Taiwan, so we’ll just say it’s the Allison Tsui brand unless she tells me otherwise. :)

This is a really tasty Dong Ding. I remember the first few times I tried dong ding oolongs I was disappointed it was more of a roasted flavor since I preferred green fresh tasting oolongs. However, my tastebuds have grown to appreciate darker more roasted flavors, and as a result, I actually really liked this tea. The first thing I noticed about this tea is the autumnal roasty toasty flavor. Then on the swallow, I’m surprised by the sweet fruitiness that hits the middle of my tongue. That sip was gone too fast for me to really get the flavor down. I held onto the next sip a little longer and tasted that fruitiness again. It was like the juicy sweet flesh of red globe grapes. And peachiness. Mmm, tasty. I really enjoyed this one!

I was also able to steep this tea about 4 times, western style throughout my work day. I probably could have gone more, but it was time to go home. :) Tasty and economical! Thanks Allison!

This was the final Red Robe oolong I tasted in my side-by-side(-by-side) comparison this morning.

The wet leaves had a nice spiciness to them, but with a touch of sweetness. The sweetness sort of had that characteristic of something that wasn’t initially sweet being broken down to create the sweetness (like how when you eat a saltine cracker and chew it a while, your saliva breaks it down into sugars and it becomes sweet in your mouth.) I’m not sure how else to describe it, unfortunately.

The first infusion had a very light scent, but the aroma I could pick up was clearly spicy and peppery. The flavor of the tea was nice and strong with a somewhat peppery flavor on the outside.

The second infusion elicited a more directly spicy aroma, but the tea itself was much milder compared to the first infusion. It was lovely and roasty, like a roast pumpkin that was lightly spiced.

Totally a fan of this tea!

I wasn’t quite sure what my brother meant when he noted “spicy red flavor” regarding this tea. I smelled the dry leaf and it was very nice, like a well dark oolong, but it didn’t exactly have a bite or spiciness to it.

Despite my uncertainty as to what to expect, I snagged a friend and we retreated to the break room in our office to enjoy a miniature tea party. Fortunately, our office provides a filtered water supply with a choice of chilled or instant hot water, at around 200F (give or take). As the first infusion was completed, we admired the gorgeous amber-orange color of the liquor. It looked like the color of a baked pumpkin.

With the first infusion, the aroma was surprisingly mild. It was definitely earthy and lightly vegetal, but I didn’t detect strong hints of much. Upon my first sip, I suddenly understood what my brother meant by “spicy red flavor”. It has the initial kick of a Chinese red tea with a mildly biting aftertaste. This infusion, the spiciness was more like the affect of something with cloves in it.

The second infusion, however, everything changed. The aroma was more powerful, the flavors of the tea were more distinctive, and the biting aftertaste began to distinctly remind me of the final cool-down after accidentally eating something with a jalapeno in it. I don’t do well with spicy hot things, but this had the lingering characteristics of that without any of the pain, discomfort, or even the flavors I disliked. It was like it took everything I hated about spicy hot foods and removed it, leaving only the pleasant tingling as it sat in your mouth and the slowly fading after-bite.

I have had a few DHP oolongs, and I don’t recall a spicy flavor, but your review makes me want to try another DHP for sure! :))

Dinah Saur

It may be that this one was special in that regard, but it definitely was there! I also forgot to mention that before it really broke into the spiciness, both of us tasted a distinct roasted flavor that sort of put me in mind of a roast squash. It was a very interesting tea!

ScottTeaMan

Wow, that sounds delicious! My mouth is watering. :))
