I like this one. It’s got a good, solid vanilla but it doesn’t taste chemical or fake and the Golden Monkey comes through quite nicely. I think this and Minted Monkey are the only non-straight GMs I’ve had. While overall I still prefer them straight, these two from Tippy’s are really solid offerings. I think this tea also settles for me that I like Madagascar vanilla but not Bourbon vanilla.

I made this iced tonight. I had a friend coming over for supper and thought I’d offer something to drink besides water and soda pop. I’ve only had this hot before so I wasn’t sure how it would turn out iced. Normally, I don’t really enjoy spicy teas iced, but I liked it! Refreshing. A nice change from coke and mountain dew. I was really trying hard to kick my soda habit and was doing pretty well until about a month ago. This should help me clib back on the wagon.

I am finally all moved into the new place, and the old place is cleaned and the keys turned in! Hardly anything is unpacked yet, but I unearthed the tea pot and two cups, and my box of tea. The packet of this tea was the one on the top, so I grabbed it for my morning cup. It’s a bit nippy out there today, so this one is perfect. Warming, mellow, and cozy. I’m back to the day job, with boxes piled around me like the walls of a maze. It’s going to be a while before I’m unpacked and completely settled, but I’ll be alright. I have access to my tea.

mrs.stenhouse12

Congrats on a successful move! And tea is the best thing to have after moving for the first time, just makes the place feel like home :)

Welcome home.

Thank you, MissLena and gmathis!

i just got this one yesterday….can’t wait to try it!

sweetea

You survived the moving kerfluffle! YAY! And this tea sounds so warm and snuggly. A perfect homecoming?

Maddy Barone

donkeytiara I hope you like it. I sure do. Might be more of a fall tea, but it was just above freezing this morning, so it suited me. sweetea I am looking forward to being done with all this unpacking! Oy! I’m exhausted! But I think I will love the place once I get everything situated.

OMGsrsly

Yay! I’m glad your move has gone well. And that you have your priorities straight. :D Tea first!

I accidentally left the window open a crack when I went to bed last night, and the temp dropped to -5F, so it is a bit nippy in here today. I had a two cup pot of black tea with breakfast, but I decided I NEEDED more tea! I pulled this out of the cabinet this morning for my mid-morning cup. Delicious! The elegantly understated spices make it especially warming. I think I’ll have another cup, maybe with a few drops of maple syrup.

Great cup of tea, and not just for the holidays, but all year round. I brewed a pot of this late this afternoon and drank a cup hot. Then I had to go out, and when I came home I had a cup cold. It was great either way. Some spicy teas leave a coating on the tongue. This one didn’t. It has a warm, spicy flavor, but I didn’t feel like the spices were overpowering. I haven’t had a tea from Tippy’s yet that I didn’t enjoy. I think this will be fabulous tomorrow morning, when the temp is supposed to be -21 F (-30C).

Dug this one out this morning. Really enjoyable, mellow and smooth and just what I wanted. It was supposed to be cool overnight, so I was anticipating the joy of a hot cup in my hands. But alas, although it was coolish outside, my windows weren’t open so it was 74 in my apartment. sigh. Oh, well, this is North Dakota, so winter is coming. I’ll have plenty of opportunities for a warm cup in my cold hands in the coming months.

I need caffeine!! This darned prednisone keeps me from sleeping, so I got only a few hours last night, and this afternoon I’m driving to the Mayo Clinic to start that aspirin desensitization procedure. Think good thoughts for me! I’m sure I’ll chime in over the next few days. I’m going to bring a few tea bags with me to Mayo. Maybe some of my basic Twinings like Prince of Wales and peppermint.

I’ve heard such good things about Mayo. Hopefully you get some help there. Good thoughts.

I don’t drink a lot of hot tea in the summer, but my air conditioner seems to have one setting: cold. Not complaining, here, as I really hate to be hot. I can always put a sweatshirt on if I need to. And drink hot tea.

This still remains one of my faves. Malty, slightly sweet, and yummy. The perfect cup for sipping while knitting, nibbling Moravian sugar cookies, and watching TV. I’m trying out the Walking Dead. Still not sure if I actually like it. The TV program, not the tea. The tea is fine. The TV show is extremely graphic. I can see the need for some of it, but really, they’re just going for shock value on a lot of it. Still, I’m interested to see how these people come together to form a society of survivors.

This is my morning pot. It is delicious as always. Breakfast is chocolate chip cookies (hey, I’m an adult. I can decide what I want for breakfast.) and this tea is marvelous with cookies!

The sick kitty saga continues. Poor little Dixie is getting very crafty in avoiding the syringe of liquid antibiotic that I am to squeeze into her mouth. It’s working though. Today she was pestering me to play with her while I was supposed to be working. The good/bad thing about being a telecommuter is that the kitties don’t know when we can play and when they are to leave me alone. In fact, they seem to have ti quite backwards. LOL

I’m sitting down now to write this evening, and I decided it was time to finally open that box of Thin Mint cookies that little girl scout cookie pusher sold me. I thought about making Minted Monkey to go with it, but I thought that might be over kill, so I went with Imperial Golden Monkey from Tippy’s Teas. Yum! Rich, Smooth, a little sweet on its own, it’s the perfect tea for these cookies!

I received my Tippy’s Tea order today and this was the sample they sent along. Although I was anxious to brew a pot of Minted Monkey, I decided to make a cup of this to see how I liked it. I LOVE it! This tea is very, very smooth, almost sweet, with a hint something that I’ll call creamy. Without any flavoring, this is almost like a dessert tea. With my anosmia, I can’t differentiate between flavors, so others might rave about the maltiness, or the cocoa undertones, but i’ll just say “Yum!”

Preparation

YAY! It arrived safely. We are glad you enjoyed the golden monkey. We really pondered over what sample to send you. We were going to send you a sample of a black blend we are working on then, but you dislike bitter, even slightly bitter. So we instead opted to send you this tea. I once brewed this particular tea for 10 minutes and it only imparted a very slight bitterness. Very hard to mess up!

Maddy Barone

Thanks so much for taking the time to review what I like and dislike, and choosing such a great sample for me. The second packet of Minted Monkey is a birthday gift for a friend who likes tea almost as much as I do. Hopefully, you’ll have another convert to your tea soon!

Backlog:

Today, I’m spending the day testing some of the tea samples and tea flavorings that I’ve been sent by companies to start working with so I figured since I can’t write reviews right now that it’s a good time to start working on my backlogged reviews waiting to be written on Steepster.

This is a really pleasant blend of teas. I like that I can taste notes from each component: I tasted malt and richness from the Assam, a hint of smoke from the Keemun, the even character of the Ceylon and the crispness of the Darjeeling.

A very satisfying afternoon tea! I liked this one a lot. Here’s my full-length review: http://sororiteasisters.com/2015/01/14/midday-flight-black-tea-blend-from-tippys-tea/

Sipdown! 46/365

Yeah, I drank this recently, but ran across the last of it while sorting samples into sipdown/larger amounts, and just decided to finish it. It was slightly less lovely than before, but that’s probably because the last bit of tea in a packet is often a little squished. Still good, though.

The vanilla is pretty light here, now, but dang the base is still good. That has definitely been the best part of the teas I’ve tried from this company. If I had to guess, it’s a decent quality chinese black, since that’s the black tea profile I tend to like, but I’m not really sure.

Thank you for sharing some of this Cavocorax!

My recollection of this tea was that it reminded me somewhat of the two vanilla teas I picked up from Whispering Pines, in that I had difficulty picking up the vanilla specifically, though it was a tasty tea, and I could tell it wasn’t just a straight tea. I think it’s because I’m looking for a more “french vanilla” sort of flavour? Which it isn’t really. Either way, I did enjoy it, and again, the base tea quality was quite apparent. I’d like to do a side-by-side with WP’s Golden Orchid and see how they stack up, if I ever have the time.

Overall, I was happy. Would probably buy this myself to have around as an alternative to straight black tea, without terrible artificial flavouring-ness.

One of the goals that we are trying to accomplish when flavouring teas is to allow thee base tea to shine. We don’t wish to over-power the tea favours too much. Glad you enjoyed the tea though!

ohfancythat

That’s why I like it! Why cover up a good base :)

TeaLady441

Yay! I’m happy you enjoyed it, even though it wasn’t the ‘right’ vanilla for you!

Kittenna

It was still good vanilla, but I think my “idea” of vanilla is that French Vanilla flavour. Like ice cream. I don’t know if that’s a reality without sweetener though…

I’ve had this tea a few times and I finally feel like I can write a tasting note about it. For some reason, I’ve had to have a few cups of it to fully form an opinion. I was excited to try this cup as it sounded really delicious – chocolate, vanilla, a nice quality tea base.

Sipping… this tea is tasty – vanilla with light chocolate notes. Despite the strong vanilla flavor, this tea is a little too thin for me. I want a stronger tea base to lend a deeper chocolate note because I’m really just tasting a wispy sort of vanilla with nothing behind it. The vanilla is very nice, don’t get me wrong, but it really needs something more.

I wouldn’t turn down a cup, but there are other teas with a similar profile that I enjoy more. If you’re looking for a vanilla tea with nothing to get in the way, I would pick this up!

TippysTea

Did you use the teaspoon measurement or did you weigh the tea out? I just made some and realised that the teaspoon measurement on the label is off. One teaspoon will give you only 2.5 grams! If you weighed the tea out I beg your pardon. If you have not weighed the tea out try two teaspoons and see if this makes a difference. If it does great, if it doesn’t it doesn’t and I’m sorry and sad you didn’t enjoy our tea.

I’ve had this one a couple times now, most recently being last night as we sat down to watch a movie. My husband decided to put on Dumb and Dumberer which was a plan i was NOT super keen on, I didn’t LOVE the first one and i am not a big fan of stupid idiot comedies.

I know this isn’t a movie review site, but I feel compelled to tell you that I laughed out loud a lot of times and so I can’t really hate on it like I thought I would. It was stupid funny.

The tea, however…. definitely tasty. I guess the spectrum of all my reviews is pretty much like “hey, this was enjoyable” or “yucky, so bad that I dumped it out”… with a bit of “meh” in between.

This one definitely falls under the “enjoyable” category. I’m a pretty big advocate of the ‘Not So Vanilla’ tea, which, with the addition of mint, became this tea.

I think if (when, really) I were to repurchase from Tippy’s Tea, I am likely to just buy twice as much Not So Vanilla and skip this one.

While it was good, I love vanilla so much that I don’t want anything (mint, for example) to overshadow it.

I liked how it’s not an artificial “chocolatey” mint tea, because whatever cocoa notes exist would come from the golden monkey tea.

(I wouldn’t complain if it was a bit more chocolatey though…the tea base I mean. I wonder if anyone’s ever mixed Laoshan Black with mint leaves??)

Soooooooooooooo, good tea, definitely worth trying.

I remain a superfan of the “Not So Vanilla” though.

TippysTea

Yep, those movies suck. I’m glad you enjoyed the tea though. We have thought of using laoshan black tea for this. I am a big fan of the laoshan black tea that Verdant tea sells. That stuff is delicious. Or even a dian hong would work well. We’re slowly expanding our tea inventory so in the future we will definitely be experimenting with different base teas. None of our blends are ever set in stone.

Looking forward to seeing what the future holds!

Can I please change taste buds with someone? :(
I am really sad. I’ve tried two of Tippy’s Teas now and I don’t really like either of them. They really aren’t living up to the hype for me. :( Turning out to be such a waste of money, I don’t even know what’s wrong with me… Clearly there is something wrong with me since everyone adores these teas and I’m literally the only one who doesn’t like them.
Gahh! I really wish I had better taste buds. :(
This tasted a bit malty, but mainly just woody to me. Not at all what I expected. :( Need to learn not to trust so much in everyone’s tasting notes on teas because I seem to always be the odd one out. My taste buds suck, man. :(

Flavors: Malt, Wood

OMGsrsly

Black teas really don’t seem to be your thing. I mean, there are some you post about liking, but there are way more you don’t like.

Sil

nothing wrong with you! it might just be you will enjoy a particular variety of black teas. I’d recommend swaps instead of purchases for black teas because you seem to have issues with them.

Ost

OMGsrsly, I don’t think that any tea is really “my thing” anymore. Used to love all the oolongs but now I’m very particular. I only really like green floral oolongs and really dislike the others. Don’t really like silver needle white tea, really only like white tea when it’s flavored. Don’t like green tea unless it’s flavored or genmaicha. And while I do like quite a few black teas, I am really particular and picky on them. Feel like I’ve figured out the other teas, but not black teas so far. There’s just so many and I feel like it’s still just trial and error, ya know? Don’t know if that makes sense. I’m just super picky, and I can’t always tell what I won’t like and what I will like. It’s easier to tell on the other teas for me.

Yeah, bummer is the people that have the black teas that I wanna try don’t wanna swap with me at all. Like ever. xD So that makes it harder, Sil

Maddy Barone

You shouldn’t ever blame yourself for not liking something. It’s not like there’s anything wrong with you! Everybody has different tastes. It’s like books. All my friends rave about Shades of Gray and I couldn’t get past the first half of the first book. My friends think I’m nuts, or elitest or something. But I don’t like that book. There’s nothing wrong with me, or with them, we jsut have different tastes. Same with tea. If you don’t like a tea that everyone else raves about, you’re not wrong. We just have different tastes.

Sil

ost…we can do a swap anytime…or i can just send out a sampling of things to try..not like i need tea back. I’m a little insane these days but i’m happy to try and o through your tasting notes and find things you haven’t tried that are in my cupboard.

OMGsrsly

:( If you want my list (of DOOM) I’m happy to just share some samples. I don’t really need anything back right now, is the problem. That and I just don’t have nearly the selection Sil does for straight black teas.

And I think everyone goes through periods where tea is just tasting meh. Totally normal, not broken.

Sil

i have way more puerh than black teas now hahaha after mandala and streetshop lol

TippysTea

I have to apologise, we are really sad that you seemed disappointed with our teas.

cookies

Aw, Ost :( If there’s anything in my cupboard you want to try just let me know.
Do you tend to brew your the same as others? Maybe you could try under-leafing to reduce some of the woodenness?

So…I gotta be honest…I was really really looking forward to these teas. When I opened the package I was hit by a wave of minty-ness, it was bold and amazing!
I couldn’t wait to drink it. So I brewed it up and when I went to take a sip the strong mint flavors had calmed down. I mainly just tasted the black tea base which really wasn’t my favorite. Tasted really woody to me. :(
There were still mint flavors, but really not strong enough to hide the woodiness for me. :( I was looking forward to this one too.
Really disappointed with this one :(
If anyone has experienced the same thing, or has any tips about making the mint flavor stronger, that would be great!
Otherwise I gotta find a new home :(

Flavors: Mint, Wood

Fjellrev

Aww, too bad. Can’t like them all.

Ost

Yeah, such a shame :(

TeaTiff

Oh man. I have been eyeing this one as mint and GM are two of my favorite things in the tea world. I will have to watch what others say about the mint…,,

Ost

Everyone seems to like it, TeaTiff…which is why I ended up pretty disappointed. :/
If you wanna swap I can send you some if you want?

Lindsay

I got a bag of Not So Vanilla that was just meh, and that’s after I really loved a sample of the same tea earlier. I feel like maybe the base tea is a bit… inconsistent? Or something. I’m still really confused.

Sipdown! I think this was a sample from Cavocorax… many years ago. Unfortunately, it lost all hints of mint, but the base tea was still good? That was my recollection from these teas – solid bases.

Perhaps my palate is a bit cleaner tonight (which is weird, because I’ve had some very garlicky tomato salad), but I’m picking up the hints of mint here, along with some vanilla on a nice, just slightly astringent, malty/chocolatey base. Pretty enjoyable, other than that twinge of astringency on my mouth, but I do still wish the flavours were stronger. Still delicious though.

Maybe the extreme difference in the flavors highlighted the mint!

Maybe! It was definitely more apparent this time than last, either way.

Thanks to Cavocorax for letting me try a bit of this one! I’m wondering if it’s the sort of tea where the flavour fades when it’s in a baggie – or maybe it’s just not very strong, but I ended up with a fairly weak cup. That said, I could both see and taste the quality of the base tea (big points), and the flavour I could pick out was pleasant, and not overly minty. I’ll try again with a greater leaf:water ratio (I may have underleafed, especially since it’s pretty fluffy), but I’m tentatively impressed. Looking forward to Not So Vanilla!

Oh, I hope it didn’t leak flavours. I thought those bags were pretty good, but maybe I should have double-bagged them! Hope your next cup works better!

TippysTea

I don’t know what bags you used but to speak from an experience we had an issue with baggies before. We ordered a whole bunch of samples from a tea company that will remain nameless. The samples came in little clear plastic baggies that were also well sealed. Unfortunately, co-mingling of flavours occurred and ruined any potential for an enjoyable tea-drinking experience. It was sad because we were both looking forward to trying those teas, but they all tasted like variations of each other because of the incestuous nature of the packaging.

OMGsrsly

Cavo, order these! I know that with the exchange it’s not such a good deal anymore, but they fit 5 tsp or so, which is an excellent large sample size IMO.

Anlina (I think?) orders these ones too.

Another share from cavocorax which was great because it let me NOT place an order with tippy teas, and still get a chance to try out a couple. Now i know that an order will be placed in future…once i get my cupboard under control! This is a relatively nice black tea. Nothing crazy out of this world, but it’s nice and smooth, with a little bit of heft to it so that it’s not on the wimpy side of things. There’s a little bit of maltiness here but not overwhemlingly enough for me to be like WOAH MALT TEA! :) A nice afternoon cup!

TippysTea

“… Once I get my cupboard under control!”

I’ve told myself that lie as well. For every one tea I finish two seem to magically appear in its place. Sometimes I don’t know whether it is an problem or a blessing.

Glad you enjoyed the tea. You pretty much got what we were trying to do. A lovely afternoon cup. We were hoping for a tea that you could sit down, drink, enjoy, have flavour. By the time you drink your cupboard down we should have several new teas as well. We have quite a few ideas in the pipeline.

Hillel

Yup, your experience of this tea matches mine. It’s rich and flavorful with some maltiness, but not heavy at all. A terrific blend. Gonna order more for sure.

Sil

Tippy – that’s great news. I’m looking forward to spending my money on canadian companies this year and you are on that semi short list haha luckily i’m the queen of sipdowns, so i should be down to 110 soonish…well once i get the other 60+ inbound hahahahaha

OMGsrsly

Definitely something for me to check out! Sounds good. :) And I think Cavo and CrowKettle have samples making their way to me, so I’ll have a good idea of what I like!

Sil

oh good. glad you’re getting some!

I got a sample of this tea in my Tippy’s order. Btw, their samples are very generous! The dry leaf smells amazing! My coworker said it smelled like Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies! Brewed up, this tea is essentially Not So Vanilla with a hint of mint, which is absolutely perfect for me because I adore Not So Vanilla, and I’m not a huge mint person. Really yummy. :)

Nightshifter

Sounds good! :)
