yum, this tea is good even when it’s not a holiday! Santa’s gingerbread holiday aka Gingerbread Cookie tea.
I added some g. rock sugar while steeping to encourage more of that cookie taste!
Ugg, I’ve have been to jiujitsu for like 3 weeks. Vacation + sick time. I’m gonna suck! I went in Honolulu, but I didn’t do much. Here’s to tea energy keeping me alive!

MMmmmm holiday tea!

Very gingery out of the package! Steeped, it’s tastes just like a spicy gingerbread cookie. The flavor gets closer to cookie like with sweetener and is even better with milk. Forget buying a gingerbread latte at the coffee shop, this tea is better!

Santa’s gingerbread holiday tea would be much loved by chai drinkers as the level of spice is quite nice. I will be drinking this tea on christmas!

Backlog:

This was the first tea that I received in my subscription of six teas from Simple Loose Leaf.

This is a pretty good tea. The blackberry is sweet and the sage adds a nice contrasting, savory element to the flavor. A good balance between the sweet, tangy fruit and the savory sage. The black tea is rich and flavorful – but don’t oversteep this one … it can become slightly bitter.

Here’s my full-length review: http://sororiteasisters.com/2013/09/30/blackberry-sage-black-tea-blend-simple-loose-leaf/

This sounds right up my alley.

This tea is for coffee drinkers. Whether you are trying to cut down coffee and move into drinking tea, or enjoy the odd cup of coffee, Coco Creme black would be a nice coffee flavored tea for you. My dad is visiting from Canada for the holidays in a few days and he will LOVE this tea as a coffee and chai drinker.

There is a watery chocolate flavor up front, followed up with a nice brisk black tea base. The base is my fav part of this tea! The tea then has a strong coffee and creamy flavor that is a little tart and dry. It’s like having a chocolate tea slowly turn into a cup of coffee! I wish there was more chocolate (and less coffee) in the blend. Since I’m not a coffee drinker, this was too coffee for me. I can see this being a decent latte though.

I’m working on a new knitting pattern right now. Top secret! I’m also rebuilding the crochet/knitting blog once the holidays are over.

TeaLady441

Exciting! I love your owls – I was thinking I’d like to try making them once I finally learn crochet, but know I know you have knitting patterns I’ll be keeping an eye out on your blog/ravelry.

This is an interesting tea. The bergamot scent is strong and so is the mint blast. It is a cool (pun originally unintentional) mix of flavors I have not seen from any one else. Might not appeal to every one but I keep going back to it.

I don’t use the flavors thing but bergamot isn’t even listed. What’s up with that?

Kat_Maria

I think the flavors that are given are mainly for straight teas and not the flavored ones… And that’s why you’ll find ‘malt’ or ‘cannabis’ (lol) on the list but not bergamot. It was confusing me as well at first.

Kaylee

ha! cannabis is a flavor option!

I’m on the hunt for a good casablanca-style tea. Would you recommend this one?

K S

Kaylee it depends on how you like your earl grey and mints. The mint is mainly peppermint with spearmint in a lighter dose. The bergamot is the main component and is not wimpy. I have gone through it pretty quick, so I guess that means I like it. I’ll check and see how much I have left to send you some to try.

Kaylee

Aw, that’s not necessary but thank you! Is there anything in my cabinet you’d like to try?

I wrote a lengthy review on my blog. Short version – this is a cool twist on the classic. This is not for weenies. The bergamot is strong in this one. The peppermint surprise attacks while sipping with an icy blast. This is a blend of Nilgiri and gunpowder, and yes I can taste both. Glad I added this one to my subscription!

I’ll be honest. I have never gotten the first cup of this. I have tried for a month. I got it for my wife and I to share but as soon as the vanilla fragrance wafts through the house my wife pops in from nowhere and walks off with my cup. So this is based on the second steep. There are jasmine blossoms all through the mix. The leaf itself is larger pieces. Definitely not CTC. The taste starts like cotton candy then seems more like caramel. As the cup cools I can taste the base especially in the aftertaste. This is very tasty decaf or not. I can see why I am not allowed to have the first cup! :)

Veronica

My daughter does the same thing. She has a talent for knowing exactly when a tea is done steeping and then she swoops in and gets my cup. At least she says thank you while walking away. :)

K S

My wife has to avoid caffeine, so I figure this is a win if she enjoys it. A lot of decaf is a little icky.

Yesterday my grown sons put up a ceiling fan with light kit in my den. My golden fleece was is in the den. So I never got to fully exhaust the leaf. This morning I put it aside for later today and grabbed this one for blurry eyes first tea. I am having again at lunch with a peanut butter and apple butter sandwich – thanks whoever suggested it. The PBAB and EG went well together. This is essentially a earl grey creme. Vanilla almost always seems to dominate the cup to me unless it is paired with mint. So to my tastes this is a vanilla black tea with light hints of bergamot. Good choice first thing and with lunch.

I have been awake since 3:00 am. I wanted, no I need, black tea this morning but I didn’t want to open a new package. I have a zillion open right now. Couldn’t find a straight black open. So I decided Earl Grey. I have at least 6 Earl Greys including green, white, creme, mint, etc, but I don’t seem to have a single straight EG. How did that happen? I can’t justify another purchase right now. Well, I could but the wife would give me the look – you all know what I’m talking about, you’ve seen it from your loved ones. So I’m having Lady Earl Grey today. Wonderfully smooth Nilgiri base and creamy vanilla. I do wish the bergamot was a little more front and center and the vanilla less so. A good cup none the less.

My 1000 tasting note! It took me three years. I think Sil and Terri did it in 6 months :)

Lala

Congrats on hitting the 1000 mark!!

After sipping two cups of this tea, writing a review on my blog, and then reading Short Soceress’ review on Steepster it is apparent that how you feel about this tea depends. SS describes this as a strong Earl Grey with a hint of vanilla. To me this is a strong cup of vanilla tea with obvious bergamot once you slow down to notice it.

I prepared my first cup with 200F water and a 3 minute steep. It was slightly drying (read moderately+ Dinosara, we all know I like drying tea the same as some people like in burgundy wine) but there was no bitterness or bite. The bergamot is not perfumey or overly citrus. The Nilgiri base is smooth and though I never felt I could single it out I feel it is responsible for making the cup deep and rich.

My second cup was steeped 10 minutes (because I forgot to pour it) with full boiling water. I actually liked the second cup better. Very smooth.

A few comments-
The leaf I feel certain is orthodox produced. The pieces expand far beyond any CTC I have seen.

The packaging I have not encountered before. I thought at first the pouch had a hole in it. It appears there is a vent attached to the back of the pouch to aid removing air after sealing. Pretty cool idea.

I feel the pricing is very fair based on the quality.

mrmopar

MIA again? LOL!

K S

Nope. Green Tea Frapp. Just didn’t post it. :)

mrmopar

Just checking!:) Think I am going to try me one of those things this weekend.

Short Sorceress

I found that with this tea the flavors changed greatly depending on the temperature of water I was using. Just a few degrees lower in temperature and it was like drinking a completely different tea.

K S

I do agree. I try to taste the cup while hot with every new tea but almost always find it to be more flavorful once it begins to cool. I am sure there is a scientific reason that is true but I have never read so.

I would like to thank Andrew at Simple Loose Leaf who provided me with a $50 credit to use towards their subscription service. This was the third tea that I was sent in my six month plan.

This tea didn’t immediately wow me, in fact, I found it a little lacking at first. It had a subtle creamy texture, likely from the Irish Creme flavoring, but the Assam base seemed to mask the flavor of the cloves, ginger, and cinnamon. I was disappointed because I really expected those to be the dominant flavors of the tea, they certainly are in the gingerbread I make. Despite this, there was one thing that really blew my mind, especially since it’s something I find lacking in most gingerbread teas. I could taste a molasses-like flavor in this tea and it wasn’t even listed in the ingredients. Are you wondering why this is important? Molasses is one of the key ingredients in making gingerbread cookies, without it all you have is a nice spiced cookie. I really enjoyed the deep earthy flavors of this tea and its strong resemblance to mild flavored molasses. This fact certainly changed my opinion of this tea, but it wasn’t the only thing.

Had I reviewed this tea several weeks ago when I first received it I might have written something completely different about it, but there is something special that changed my opinion. I received a tin of cookies in the mail as part of a holiday swap, they were the most delightful tasting gingerbread cookies I’ve had in awhile. And guess what, they tasted just like this tea. They also tasted completely different than the gingerbread cookies I make myself. This is where personal bias really comes into my tea reviews. Sometimes I have an idea in my head of what I want a tea to taste like, but am disappointed when it doesn’t resemble the idea I have in my head. As a writer it can be very difficult to distinguish between what is bias, what is fact, and what is opinion. I try to be as honest as possible in my writings regarding all of these things and honestly, I really enjoyed this tea. I think it is a great addition to my already full holiday line-up.

Thanks go to Andrew at Simple Loose Leaf who provided me with a $50 credit to use towards their subscription service. This was the second tea that I was sent in my six month plan.

I should have loved this tea. Rooibos, Honeybush and Rose… these are a few of my favorite things. Sadly I didn’t, in fact, I actually had a very negative experience with the tea which I feel isn’t just a matter of my tastes, but a fault with the tea itself. While some floral teas lean towards the delicate side and really showcase the ingredients I think this particular tea takes its floral nature to the extreme. Personally, I felt it tasted like potpourri which was incredibly disappointing because floral teas tend to be among my favorites. On the plus side, it does resteep well and I was able to make three cups of tea from one serving of leaf. However, even the third steep was undrinkable, the rose flavoring was still overpowering.

Ultimately the most drinkable cup I was able to produce with this leaf came about by accident. I somehow managed to misread the temperature on my hot water pot and steeped my final cup 195°F for 1m30s which is well outside the steeping guidelines I was provided. I still found it to be overly floral and not entirely appealing, but I was finally able to taste some of the sweetness from the honeybush base. Perhaps this tea has more potential with lower temperatures, but it will have to wait awhile before I find out. I still have 2oz remaining of this blend, so I’ll save that as a project for a rainy day.
