Tea Pop Sipdown (2110)!

Made this as a tea pop for a longer afternoon meeting yesterday, and it was pretty dang delicious! Not overly sweet, but definitely enough sweetness to balance out the slight mineral taste that our on tap fizzy water has in the office. The sakura almost tasted better this way, too? More floral and less candy like, and well balanced with the umami of the matcha. It had slighty “powdery” taste that made me think a tiny bit of cosmetics, but but nothing that was very unpleasant.

I don’t think I’d buy this one again (unlike Kane’s AWESOME apple matcha) but I was really happy that this was my parting mug of it!

Geek Steep S2E18 – Danganronpa

So this week’s fandom was one of my choosing and, generally, that means I have a solid idea of what teas I want to pair. Or, at least, where to start when brainstorming. My first idea was that I wanted to pick a sakura/cherry blossom tea because my favourite character in the anime/game is named Sakura. She’s not a very big focus in the episodes we watched though, so I decided that I’d drink my Sakura tea for the recording…

I actually own another Cherry Blossom matcha, from DT, that I just adore but we’ve actually used both of DT’s cherry blossom teas (the matcha and the loose leaf) as well as the cherry blossom oolong that I own already this season. It seems, without realizing it, that maybe cherry blossom is the Lapsang this season!? Thankfully, I have a lot of teas to pick from so we weren’t out of cherry blossom teas just yet to choose from…

I thought the taste of this one was great! It definitely has a deliciously sweet and playful cherry blossom flavour that’s perfect for this weird not quite winter and not quite Spring weather with just a bit of a nice fruity undertone. Reminds me a little bit of almond cookies, but I know that’s just because of that weird flavour phenomenon where your brain processes almond and cherry, and vice versa. The main issue was just that it’s very gritty which is always just an awful experience in a matcha.

Now, since recording the episode and discussing the texture of the matcha, I have learned that there’s actually ground sakura leaf in the matcha so I’m definitely more understanding than I was with my first impression. It still doesn’t erase the fact that this matcha has some texture issues, but it adds an interesting element of authenticity to the flavour and it at least assures me that it’s not just inconsistent grinding/quality of the tea leaf itself throughout this company’s different flavoured matchas…

Sipdown (1516)!

Definitely a little bit sad to have finished off this very delicious and unique apple flavoured matcha – it’s definitely the best one I’ve ever come across! I don’t know if another Yunomi order is in my near future, but whenever the next one happens I will be adding more of this tea to the cart!

From this past Matcha Monday!

I cut this with a plain matcha this time around, just to get the texture thicker and creamier and reduce the overall sweetness a bit. It worked really well and the resulting cup was the same perfectly creamy and fresh white fleshed apple with floral undertones – just less intense. Loving this matcha so much and actually really sad I’m so close to a sipdown.

Added some of this in my recent Yunomi order in the hope that it would be more of a Japanese style/take on apple flavour – I actually have more than my fair share of apple matcha blends but all are a bit more North American in style: kind of baked apple/apple cinnamon type of flavour. Delicious in their own right, but a good Japanese apple flavour just hits different.

I was worried when I opened the package because it smelled somewhat flat/stale. Appleish for sure, but in the way that like dehydrated apples are – not very appealing. Whole new story once the water hit though! This ended up being pretty spot on to what I’d expected/wanted. Very sweet apple but that sort of creamy “white flesh” apple with a floral undertone to it. Not tart/crisp at all, but soft and welcoming.

Like I said, Japanese apple just hits different and this was excellent.

This doesn’t quite taste like sakura to me. It has a sweet cinnamon flavor to it. It’s also very, very sweet. Not a favorite.
