another darjeeling from my subscription with Golden tips India.
This pick is from Aug 10, 2013
Grade: FTGFOP1 Cl Tip
Abundant with yellowish/white & soft brown tips.
Doesn’t have distinct muscatel flavour upon opening.
2 and half spoon on the pot (450mg); steep produces rather light golden brew, lighter than most of the darjeelings I had so far….
very faint muscatel aftertaste, alas, for me, I prefer mine bold and with muscatel taste/flavour.
Generally, a good darjeeling though, even better for first time tasters that much rather fancy a less pronounced darjeeling ….
Overall, proper darjeeling and o.k.
Preparation
Ok, I’m on a CTC roll….. Since my exploring “nicer” teas began 9 months ago, I have given the cold shoulder to the CTCs I’ve received as samples, somehow believing I’d “been there” already (with tea bags) and shunning them from my coveted spot in the daily cup I look forward to. Since my surgery, I’ve found my palate is out of whack, and so I thought it might be the perfect time to return to the CTC stash to weed through them. Weed?? This isn’t weeding….this is ENJOYING!!
The mornings in Southern California have finally gone a tad chilly (hey, when it’s 90 during the day, 60 in the morning seems chilly!) and this CTC exploration has made it feel like fall. Assam Exotic Blend from Golden Tips Tea is a simple one note cup of wonderful maltiness. With a full, round mouthfeel and low astringency when steeped at 3 minutes, this is the equivalent of the “everyday cup of joe” that people grab as they run out the door to join the rat race. Hearty, reliable and satisfying, this is the flavor profile that the British love so much. Extra added bonus: if you were someone who created their own flavored teas, including chai, the versatility of this CTC would be perfect blank canvas for your creations.
Flavors: Malt
Preparation
This was alright, it was flavorful enough, but for whatever reason it didn’t really impress. It was a hair more astringent than I prefer (and I steep pretty much all black teas except chai now at 200 degrees to avoid the bitterness), but not bad at all. Most would probably enjoy it. It has a bit of a sweetness too. No idea why I am not the biggest fan. Recommended because of that odd quandary.
Preparation
I’m sick, so this doesn’t really count as a review, because I couldn’t really taste it.
But I liked it.
Different than other whites. Had a surprising depth to it. I think it might have been a little malty or something. There was definitely a something to it.
And then I accidentally let the second infusion steep way way way too long. It was still okay, not bitter.
That’s what I said, Lee! I’d offer to share, but I don’t have very much, so I couldn’t taste it as well as I wanted to, so I definitely want more of this. Different and unique!
Oh no I wasn’t wanting you to do that,,, I was just surprised to see this!!! Get better soon and then please review with all your taste buds bc this is interesting!
From the August GTT subscription box.
This is a decent first flush, but it’s from last year, so I wonder if it’s lost a lot of its flavor already because it seems kind of flat. It feels like it wants to be more flavorful, but it just isn’t there.
It’s easy drinking, though, and keeping me company as I work. I can’t work with a bad tea because it actually distracts me too much. This one works.
This is from my August GTT subscription, and per the packaging was picked on 1 July 2013
Ooh, nice and muscatel. I don’t always get that, even on second flush darjeelings. This one has it. I wonder what it was like when it was fresh and not a year old. I mean, it still tastes good, but I wonder if it was better a year ago? It’s hard to say. I still think I prefer 1st flush to 2nd flush, but I am enjoying this tea.
It’s interesting to me how different people taste different teas.
The other reviews of this tea say it has no flavor. I agree it is a lighter tea, but I don’t think it has no flavor. I love the flavors coming from this tea. I find it to be somewhat fruity, and then it ends quite sweet.
It doesn’t really do multiple infusions so well. A second infusion is lightly flavored, barely there.
I had never looked at the price of this tea on the website, and I don’t think I would buy it. So I am enjoying what I got in my July box, and the extra I got from the very sweet Marzipan
I don’t believe that any darjeeling was meant to be multiply infused. I tried it once (per the instructions on the Steepster Select envelope, which says that it’s good for 3 re-steeps). To me, it tasted like dishwater…
This tasted good but underwhelming. It definitely had a fruity, sweet finish, but it was so faint. I was surprised, given I steeped this for the entire five minute recommended steep time. I think in the grand scheme, there is better flavor out there. But if you enjoy barely there flavor, or have a much more sensitive palate than I, this might work for you. It is just too plain for me.
Preparation
No one’s rated this yet?
Mmmmm it was yummy. Just the pallet cleanser I needed after the shan tea disappointment.
I had it straight up because I couldn’t find any sugar and it is by far and away one of the best chai’s I’ve had. I can’t wait to play around with doing it stove top or with coconut milk.
What makes it stand out is the assam I think. Any tea company can add some spices to tea and call it chai(though these spices are perfectly balanced) but here the assam shines. I’ve always felt like assam was the best base for chai(I think it’s traditional) and it’s really visible here.
I just feel content and want to spend the morning snuggling my kitty and drinking chai.
I’m really wondering what next month’s box will be like, since so many of these teas are on their site (and seem to be their regular items).
