I was in the mood for a Taiwanese black tea this morning, and this was the first one I saw, so here we are! This sample is from Blodeuyn. The leaves are beautiful and have that gnarled, twisty Taiwanese Assam style. They’re very dark in color, almost black. Dry, they smell surprisingly strongly of molasses, and there’s also some sweetness and malt. I used a teaspoon (roughly, these teas are difficult to measure!) of leaf and let it steep for 3 minutes at 200 degrees.

Once brewed, the tea’s aroma is grainy sourdough bread with lots of dried fruit and some caramelized sugar/molasses tones. The taste is very similar. There’s a combination of tangy sourdough and soft homemade wheat breads, along with a fair amount of malt. The molasses seems to have lightened itself into honey, but definitely a stronger raw honey. I must confess, it took me far too long to identify the dried fruit that I was tasting, and then I felt like a complete dope for not thinking of it sooner… It’s definitely dried apricots, and I can say maybe there’s a hint of a second fruit – a mild and sweet one like golden raisin or fig. Overall, a very delicious tea for the morning!

Backlog:

A rich, delicious black tea with characteristics that remind me of an Oolong. It’s a very interesting and intriguing tea. Notes of fruit, flower, earth and molasses. This isn’t like the “Assam” that you might be used to (the Indian Assam) it’s much smoother and less astringent. It’s like the best characteristics from the robust, rich Assam tea together with the best characteristics of a Formosa Oolong.

Backlog:

I have tried a few teas from this company thus far (I have a bunch of reviews waiting for me to post tasting notes about them … yeah, still behind) and I’ve loved everything I’ve tried from them.

This is a beautiful green tea. Very fresh, reminiscent of spring when the early leaves are appearing, the scents, the feel, the experience and the flavors of newness of spring. A lovely delicate flavor but still quite complex. Notes of cream, very smooth, sweet, hints of vanilla and a vegetal tone.

Dry leaf aroma: Sweet hay and malt.

Wet leaf aroma: Damp hay with a vegetal tang.
Wet leaf appearance: http://instagram.com/p/sGdvtiFcNJ/

Preparation: Brewed western style in a ceramic infuser mug.

First/only steeping: 5 minutes at 212 degrees. The aroma is malt with undertones of honey and the slightest hint of sweet hay. The main flavors are malt and a pleasant bitterness, with a suggestion of hay at the end of the sip.

A nice all-around breakfast tea. Typically I take mine with honey, but this one stands on it own.

Flavors: Bitter, Hay, Malt

This is a good milk oolong. It has an almost nutty quality to it. It definitely has some of those cream flavors you expect from a decent milk oolong and also has a little bit of floral aspect to it during the steeping process. I got 7-8 good steeps out of it before it quit. It’s a good value at about $5.50/ oz.

Dry leaf aroma: Sweet and crisp with undertones of honey.
Dry leaf appearance: http://instagram.com/p/r58lC1lcAn/

Wet leaf aroma: Slightly vegetal with suggestions of hay.
Wet leaf appearance: http://instagram.com/p/r6CV2VFcG_/

Preparation: Brewed western style in an all-glass infuser mug.

First/only steeping: 5 minutes at 210 degrees. The aroma is predominately hay with subtle vegetal notes and the liquor is a medium golden brown. Honey Black tastes much like it smells, hay-vegetal-black tea, with an aftertaste of hay and a vegetal tinge.

Funny enough, while drinking this tea I kept thinking about spinach. I find it odd to experience this in a black tea, albeit I am still learning a lot about varietals.

Flavors: Hay, Spinach, Vegetal

This is my first mug of tea for the day. Yes, after 9:30 at night.

I have some sort of stomach virus that has had me down for the count. It started yesterday, but I tried to ignore it. Apparently, that was not the right thing to do as it got a lot worse before basically knocking me flat on my ass last night after I lost dinner.

I’ve slept most of the day and I’m feeling a lot better.

So I decided to have some tea. I wanted something nice and easy drinking, a flavorful green since my sense of taste seems to be a little off. This was my choice.

Oh it’s good. I ordered a bunch of it off of the Beautiful Taiwan website, but I got last year’s harvest instead of this years, to save a little money. Did it make a difference in the tea? I don’t think so as this tastes incredible to me. It’s one of my favorite greens.

So I was supposed to mail out a bunch of teas today, but it didn’t happen. Probably not until Wednesday now because I don’t want to touch anything for other people with the way I have been feeling. Sorry for the delay everyone.

boychik

Oh no. I hate stomach bugs. Pls feel better soon

Wuyi-Wolf

no worries! feel better soon!

Hopefully by today things are looking up for you, health-wise. Sending good thoughts your way!

Backlog from vacation

So the first night of our vacation some wicked storms when through the town we were staying in. The first round came while we were out eating dinner and drinking beer. The second round came through starting about 3am, waking me up. I never fell back asleep because the storms just kept on coming. The power was knocked out about 5am.

Fortunately, the bed and breakfast we were staying at was prepared. Even though the hot water system didn’t work, they knew I am a tea drinker and they had hot water waiting for me when I wandered downstairs shortly after 6 because I really needed something to drink.

It turns out that one of the owners collects antique kerosene lamps. Crazy, but true. So everything was lit by these lamps, which was really cool.

Anyway, the tea handled the unknown water temperature really well. This is such a yummy tea. I’m currently all out of it, but I think this is one that I will be purchasing again soon.

This is a really nice tea. The aroma from the leaves while they were steeping was amazing. Beautiful, even. The flavor was sweet and refreshing, incredibly smooth.

apt

this really is a great tea

It is. I definitely enjoyed it.

This tea is GOOD.

I love the mouth feel. It is creamy and buttery. The flavor is outstanding. I’ve had this pseudo gongfu and I’m on my 7th infusion now, and it’s still giving amazing notes. I knew this one was more expensive, but it’s $25 for 2 oz. (I only had a sample size.) I think it’s worth it. This is one of the best oolongs I’ve had.

The wet leaves smell so green and fresh, but the tea doesn’t taste vegetal at all (it’s okay if it does, but that’s not what I get from the tea.)

This was a nice tea. It’s kept me company all morning and into the afternoon.

Creamy, sweet, buttery, just a touch floral. It’s not as milky as some milk oolongs feel, but it still has a very nice mouth feel and taste. I am enjoying it quite a bit. It’s got a very light flavor. It’s not my favorite milk oolong, but it’s a nice tea.

It’s been a while since I had this one. I had forgotten how much I like it. In fact, I think I like it more than I used to.

I had this over the weekend, one of the teas I brought with me to robots. Then I had this one again yesterday and today. I couldn’t taste anything at all yesterday, but somehow the aroma of this one got through my horribly stuffed nose. Really. Today, not tasting much of anything, I can actually taste this tea. Wow.

And now, I’m going to go back to sleep. Another nap is in order for me.

Starfevre

glad it wasn’t wasted on inability to taste it. Hopefully that means you’re getting better!

This is very light in flavor but it has a great mouth feel. It’s lightly floral, lightly green, just nice and easy drinking. It is quite creamy feeling, for sure.

I’m enjoying this.

One of my cats is curled up with me. He has been going absolutely crazy for my tea lately.

https://www.flickr.com/gp/cheri0627/z1M67n

Yes, he is licking the bag.

He is a goofball.

boychik

He has a good taste;)

Cheri

He is the only one of my cats that seem interested in tea. When I get TTBs and I sit on the floor and sort through them, he always sits next to me, or right next to the box.

Clint

This is why I love stepfather. I learn about so many great tea companies!

PS- your cat is adorable

Clint

Steepster*

Cheri

I agree. I’m growing so much as a tea lover because of Steepster. (Heck I saw about the company on reddit, but I was enticed to buy based on a conversation in the tea buying hiatus thread.)

And thanks, I think he’s adorable, too.

mj

LOL that you were inspired to buy this tea by the tea buying hiatus thread

Cheri

I know, right?! I’m putting myself back on hiatus for a while. I have to.

MzPriss

That’s a big pretty kitty

Cheri

He looks big in that picture. He’s not quite 11 lbs. His brother is right around 12. (the girls are smaller at 6.5 and 8 lbs. but let me tell you, the 8 lb cat is definitely the cat in charge. I have seen her throw her 12 lb brother like she was a pro wrestler. It was amazing.)

Cheri

Sars, what a cutie! (For a second, I had to look at who sent this because another friend has a kitty also named Chairman Meow.)

This one is the 2014 release.

This tea is invigorating and remarkably refreshing! It’s fragrance is delightful – like a freshly cut field after a spring rain. The taste is no less remarkable and the leaves are good for many steepings. There is smoothness to the sip, yet there is complexity to the texture and a medium fullness in the mouth. I’d say there are hints of stewed butter beans in its brew, with lingering taste of sweetness afterwards. What a special tea and one of a kind!

This Asian Beauty Oolong, also known as Dongfang Meiren,Oriental Beauty or White Tip Oolong, is as complex and evolves in character as great as the variety of its name. It is quite impressive, as it changes with each infusion. There is as much shift in the taste and profile as the weather here in the Midwest. I’m very captivated by this one, to the degree of being very hard to stop drinking it. Cup after cup, there was something new and intriguing.

Let me start by saying the leaf quality is spectacular! There is a varying of size, but most all of the leaves are smaller than the normal larger oolong leaf. There are plenty of very small leaves that are absolutely perfect in their shape and with lots of buds present as well. The leaves resemble a very high grade black tea leaf, with its smaller shape and length. Again, very interesting.

The initial few infusions speak of a certain cranberry tanginess that has a sweet aftertaste – like its been mixed with an orange blossom honey. Very unique and different from other Oriental Beauty teas that I’ve tried. One thing I did noticed as you got past the fist 3 steepings, was its transition in taste to a Second Flush Darjeeling black tea. Very nice! I can certainly see why some would think of this oolong as a black tea.

I know that this may not be the tea for everyone, however I would encourage you to try it and if you don’t really care for it at first…keep drinking! It will change in taste and very well may be one of your favorites.

im very tempted. very…did you get any free samples with the order?

Pureleaf

On this particular order I did not…however in the past I have. It may have been due to the 25% off Black Friday sale – not sure. You should definitely try these guys – they offer free shipping to all orders in the US. No minimum order requirements. Also, I know you can purchase samples from them. I don’t see this option online, but after contacting them – they can arrange the purchase. Everything I’ve tried (which has been a lot lately, lol), has been awesome.

boychik

thank you so much for recommending this company. i probably will place the order tonight. i’m always on the lookout for good Oriental Beauty. this one seems affordable

I’ve been able to try this one a few times now – the first time was a higher temperature (208°F), with only a 5 sec steeping time. Honestly, the only difference between the two, is the extra creaminess for the first 3 steepings, when brewed at a lower temp. After these first few steepings, the taste profile is the same.

Definitely a nice hand picked oolong and the leaves are some of the largest oolong leaves I’ve seen. It is very clean and smooth. Oddly enough, the taste is so clean, it reminds me of a soapiness that I find hard to explain. If you have ever been punished by a parent, for something you shouldn’t have said in an unorthodox form of discipline(i.e. having your mouth washed out with soap), you would have some sort of understanding. Of course, this is not the overall taste, but it is certainly there.

The leaves are very giving in their refreshing floral fragrance and taste. I’ve long since forgotten which steep I’m on currently, which I know is many (over 8) and it appears it has tons left to give. This tea has a nice calming sensation to the body. Very relaxing.

Great quality leaves and a tremendous amount of depth! Thick and almost brothy, that ends with a returning sweetness that lingers. The richness of aroma from the wet leaves is intoxicating, as it captivates your senses in its complexity. It gets out of the arena of floral notes, but is more savory and thick. You can smell butternut squash, along with a slow simmered, stewed chicken (sorry if the meat reference offends – I’m at a lack of words to compare and this is the closest I can think of). The taste is more like green lima beans and butter. Smooth and full to the mouth. No astringency. Great tea! Certainly above ordinary.

This Sun Moon Lake black tea is very smooth, no astringency and a good amount maltiness. It has a faint sugar cane sweetness, with a milder boldness for an assam. There are initially some greener, more cucumber vegetal notes, along with a mild bell pepper undertone (this last very brief and transitions to the maltier, sweeter flavor).

The quality is certainly there, as you can see the wholeness of the long, hand rolled leaves. They unfurl nicely and hold their flavor for 6+ steepings (gongfu – shorter in gaiwan).

A very nice, calm tea that is even enjoyable for a later night.

First, let me say I love hand picked teas! Especially with the oolongs, as they usually require more courting and patience to wait for their leaves to fully unfurl. What a treat and reward to those that dare to have the endurance to see and taste this great development. The complexity and change in each steeping, yields even more character and delight.

This tea is such a tea. One that is delicate and tender, with a certain youthfulness of the leaves. Young and aromatic, yet deep and fulfilling. Its medium yellowish green color is brilliant, with a sparkly clarity. The taste of the sip is very intense – creamy, slightly flowery, but more clean and palate cleansing. I’m picking up something that has a nice and tasteful mineral tanginess to the tounge(no it’s not the water – I only use filtered water from my Brita)that definitely adds to all the other sensations with drinking this tea. There is a fullness to the liquid, thicker almost. The flavor lingers on the tongue and sweetens the entire mouth.

Each rolled tea ball, has been tightly rolled with stems attached. Not the normal low quality stems that you usually see from some budget teas. These tea leaves, once they unfurl – reveal some very nice looking leaves and bud tips that are attached to the stems. Everything looks like it still has life to them, freshly picked – not the overly dried up and poor quality look.

I’m very pleased with this tea thus far. For the quality, the pricing isn’t bad at all, if your looking for a good quality oolong.

This company ships for FREE anywhere in the US, which another great reason to try them!
