Needed a little simple no fuss comfort before driving to class on a cold dreary overcast day. Is it spring yet? I didn’t think so. At least I have my bergamot to keep me warm.

Yesterday I reached the halfway point in my college class. I was so dizzy I had no business going – but I’m a guy, so I went anyway. Today I’m dizzy, and my head hurts but my ears are popping so maybe I can ride this out. I have been on oxygen for three years so I really have to be careful but I don’t want to spend $150 for $10 antibiotics if I can avoid it. Yeah, no insurance.

I’m having this today to test the nose and taste buds. I see no reason to drink expensive stuff if I can’t smell or taste it. Taster seems to be almost normal. As long as I don’t go for anything too subtle.

mrmopar

Hope you feel better soon!

Sorry to hear your not feeling good. Sounds like bad allergies. We’re pretty much in the same zone, I think, & my allergies have been outrageous of late. So bad that I broke down & took Zertek. I don’t take it often, but haven’t been drinking my nettles, & I admit, zertek takes effect pretty fast & since I only take it once in awhile, it’s good for a couple of days.

K S

I take Allegra, Flonase, and Mucinex generics most days to keep me open. My youngest son who still lives with us has pneumonia. I’m keeping my distance.

gmathis

Ever do ear candles? There is no middle ground; either people love ’em or hate ’em.

Terri HarpLady

I used to used ear candles, a long time ago when my kids were young. They can be helpful, but I haven’t used them for a long time.

K S

hot wax in your ears? That sounds dangerously painful. I have on occasion pointed a hair dryer in my ear for several minutes at a time. Feels good while you’re doing it.

Terri HarpLady

Lol, the wax doesn’t actually go in your ears, silly!

gmathis

We swear by them (the heat and cylindrical shape pull the gunk out’cher ears), but I will never forget our first time. Concerned we might set off the smoke alarm, hubby (the patient) stretched out in the patio lounge chair so we could try it outside. Son, about 5 at the time, so concerned, he stood at the ready with a pitcher of water in case Mom set Dad’s ear on fire. Plus, if you’re as intrigued by gunk and grossness as we are, it’s kind of interesting to see what’s been lurking around the auditory canals and gets sucked up the tube.

Probably not the brightest idea I have had all day but I fixed two mugs of this just before getting ready for bed. Why? Because I need my own tea. Being out of the house everyday and not near my kettle is getting old. This was much needed and very comforting tonight.

I have a stack of samples needing opened for review on the blog. This morning I just haven’t cared. This one was easy to grab and I don’t have to think. Hoping it motivates me.

This tea is like meatloaf and mashed potatoes. It isn’t fancy or the best but to me it will always comfort and satisfy. Speaking of meatloaf – my wife makes it with oats instead of bread crumbs, and chili sauce instead of ketchup. It’s awesome. Last Sunday we had a pitch in dinner at church. One of the ladies made her meatloaf with BBQ sauce. It was also pretty awesome. I think I have an idea for supper… Man Fuel!

ashmanra

Now I want meatloaf.

Veronica

I make my meatloaf with oats, too. It’s really good (if I do say so myself). The first time I tried it I was unsure, but now I doubt I ever use breadcrumbs or my grandma’s favorite standby – Saltine Crackers.

gmathis

Mom’s recipe = 1/2 and 1/2 hamburger to ground pork. Y’all are making me hungry. (I am the only meatloaf eater at my house, so I have to make it on the QT or wait till I can eat it out, and restaurant meatloaf can’t quite cut it.)

K S

Meatloaf is the only meal my wife fixes that my youngest son will eat more than one serving. It is possibly my favorite comfort food and I have never had a restaurant version I even thought was tolerable. Problem is I have band practice tonight so I was just informed it ain’t gonna happen. I guess I’ll be playing the blues tonight. Tough to pull off in a worship setting unless you’re Mark Farner (Grand Funk) – Judgment Day Blues http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRTpIpaDoWw

ashmanra

Oh, gmathis, woe is me for I am the only meatloaf eater here, too! I made the first end in twenty five years just a few weeks ago and told them “hang it all! I have done without long enough! You know how to make a peanut butter sandwich!” What is better than warm meatloaf with mashed potatoes unless it is a meatloaf sandwich slathered with mayonnaise the next day? Sigh…

gmathis

KS — Ever listen to any Kaiser Mansfield? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUTK03sIsh8

ashmanra—You can keep the mashed potatoes and mayonnaise, but next day meatloaf slathered in ketchup will be served in Heaven. I am sure of this.

Claire

Now I’m hankering for meatloaf too, dangit! I like to mix in some sauteed finely chopped mushrooms, peas, and carrots. Perfect thing at the end of a long day.

K S

Too bad we don’t all live in the same neighborhood. Meatloaf and tea for everybody!

ashmanra

That would be awesome! :D

A good day. I had pork roast tonight. It was unbelievably good and juicy and tender. I fixed this tea to go with it. It held up nicely. Then I got two fig newtons and – Oh My! It brought the citrus and green tea flavors out like never before. Now it will be hard not to eat newtons with this tea.

Today, after only applying a little over four months ago, with no lawyers (one actually told me I didn’t need him) and no appeals, my disability claim was approved. It is humbling knowing 2/3 of those who apply are denied multiple times. I have never seen anyone, not in a hospital bed, move through so easily. To me the funny thing is I had to be forced to see I needed help and should apply in the first place. Now I have options as I go back to college and I can now (hopefully) afford insurance. To my faith friends – thank you!

TheTeaFairy

Such great news, congratulations and thanks for sharing…going through rough times, every inspiring story such as yours is a nice addition to my «strength bag» at the moment. Asking for help is the hardest thing sometimes, isn’t it?

gmathis

He can move mountains…even when they consist of paperwork.

K S

TTF – you know that is why I have been posting these personal things. Hoping it would encourage someone else as I go through it.

Speaking for myself I notice there is such a stigma attached to filing for disability. People assume a lot. It can make it hard to reach out.

G – Amen.

mrmopar

Great news!! He always comes through not always when we want , but always in his time. We are all “rough” till he puts us in the fire to forge us and make us stronger than we were before. I have talked to him about you and he has worked in our life. Always with us he is.

This is what I was looking for in my zombie state earlier this morning. A simple chun mee with just a touch of bergamot. The tea bag version is different. As I recall, it is much heavier on the citrus – making it more of a true earl grey. The caffeine punch in this sneaks up on you. The taste is not face contorting like some breakfast blends so you don’t expect it. Sipping it calms me, but it gets my heart pounding after a while. Sure got me through a lot of mornings when I was working. I don’t care how much expensive stuff I may drink, I will always love this cheapster.

gmathis

(Yay—can finally comment! Was beginning to feel like I didn’t get invited to the party.)

Looking forward to trying it soon—-can’t seem to find uninterrupted sipping and mulling time right now.

K S

Congratulations on finally getting through. I know how you feel. I spent most of the day, yesterday, trying to figure out how to log in. The dashboard still seems wonky. Posts from 4 days ago are at the top of mine.

About to run out of mint yet?

gmathis

Enough for a couple more cups, I think—-hoarding it for “special” now.

From yesterday – needed this after watching Paranormon at the $1 summer kid movies. I am and forever will be a big kid. My wife, grown son, and I sat in the middle of bus loads of little curtain climbers to watch this. No we didn’t go with any of them. It was great fun watching with kids. At one point you could hear the room gasp, then one of them whispered, “He said a bad word”. They giggled nervously at the creepier parts. They laughed and clapper out loud at the funny parts. So much fun.

The tea was comfortable as always – read one of my other 700 notes on this one.

This one again??? Why yes, yes I am. Light citrusy goodness up high and deep slightly bitter green down low. Just the way I like it.

Everyone at band practice seemed to be still wiped from the weekend – of course the heat today didn’t help. This tea was much needed when I got home. Best three cents a cup I’ve found.

After the tea disasters of the last few mornings, I thought I should grab one I had plenty of, just in case. OK, I’m lying. I totally wanted this one again today. I put this in the database as Earl Grey Green but it is actually called something more like Green Tea with Earl Grey. The Chun Mee is the driving force behind this one. Bergamot adds a nice aroma and a light touch to the cup. It is not overly complex, just comforting.

Yeah, yeah, I know, that’s three days in a row. I promise to move on to something else soon. This morning I was forced to get dressed and go out the door to yard sale. Any one want to guess how much I didn’t want to do that? It would be ok if occasionally there was a nice guitar or tea kettle – but there never is. I stalled the inevitable for a few moments while I made a travel mug of this and grabbed a bagel. Out of a ceramic travel mug this is so satisfyingly delicious today. It can turn bitter (like most Ahmad teas) if you over heat or over steep but I’m what you call an expert (stolen line from Mythbusters). It tastes slightly roasted out of the travel mug and I do love the smell of bergamot in the morning.

gmathis

I would give my right arm and $1.75 to spend a morning playing at yard sales :) (That’s a buck more than I paid for my three Ahmad tins.)

K S

Well sure, you found tea. All I saw was clothes and knickknacks.

gmathis

And what’s wrong with that?

K S

Women. Oops not very PC of me ;)

gmathis

Indeed. The clothes and whatnots are usually left because the men come to get the scrap tools and half-working appliances before the ladies get there. You should’ve left earlier.

K S

Hey, I resemble that remark. I did almost come home with a cube frig for the man cave. It had ice in it by the way and the door closed all the way. :)

ashmanra

LOL! Well, I went to an estate sale and got a CD of the rat pack for youngest. She is a big fan of forties music. I am probably going back tomorrow to go a couple of things for half price, one item being a small serving piece for my china astern that we use every week for tea party. It will be $2.50 tomorrow! Tiny, but it will be great for holding Samwise’s cream puffs. (He gets two treats every week at tea party.)

I woke up at 2:00 a.m. again. :( Pretended to be asleep until 4:30. Gave up and decided to play bass guitar (headphones are your friend). 6:30 and I am starting my tea day with this one.

If you have ever used Twinings loose leaf, I find Ahmad to be just a notch above. The bergamot is fairly light in this by my standards. If this were a new to me company I would rate it mid 80 but this tea and me have history.

Celebrate with me or pity the fool… not sure which. Looks like I last entered a note for this tea almost 3 years ago. I used to drink this everyday and ordered it in loose leaf from Amazon. With shipping it was about $17.

Yesterday I found this on the shelf at Sahara Mart for $8.99. It was Tuesday. That means 10% off! So $8.09 for 500 g of loose leaf. With one resteep that works out to $0.02/cup. Woot!

I just found out the base is chun mee. I love straight chun mee. That helps explain why I love this so. The bergamot is freeze dried so the government makes them label it as flavored. Whatever, it is aromatic and flavorful and cheap.

I went to the store looking for a plain loose green to play with by mixing with herbs growing in my yard. I walked out with this instead because I am a junkie. It’s crazy, what am I going to do with a pound of tea when I already have a cabinet full of sample bags?

I still don’t have plain green tea but this smells so good. My high rating is based on taste divided by value times comfort tea squared. It’s all very scientific.

Lala

Gotta love 10% Tuesday!

mrmopar

I bargain shop my tea purchases all the way. The more you save on one the more of a different kind you can buy!

gmathis

What’s a Sahara Mart? None in our neck of the woods.

K S

Sorry g it is a locally owned shop. This is the only place I have ever found Ahmad tea on the shelves. I mentioned the name for any Hoosier or former IU students who may have been there.

This is my favorite go to tea. I start everyday at work with this tea. The bergamot flavoring is just the right amount to give the tea a wonderful aroma and a taste that draws you in and begs you to relax. It does not overpower the green tea, which I find to have very good flavor. I find Twinings new formula too citrusy. With Tazo the citrus is non-existant. Ahmad’s tea I find to be balanced. I have used it loose and in bags.

Drinking the last of this… I think it’s fairly old as I can’t remember buying it! This blend is on par with other black currant blends I’ve tried. None of them has really stood out much from another, to be honest. Decent cup of black, slightly fruity tea.

I’m drinking this right now. A good morning tea. The smell (pre-brewing) really reminds me of Earl Grey but the bergamot is not nearly as strong of a flavour as most Earl Greys I’ve drank.
A bit bitter, I think I’ll brew it a little less next time. Or I might just add some milk as another taster mentioned. (I don’t drink tea with milk often so I can’t (yet!) tell right off if a tea would be good with it.) Added a little honey.

I love this strawberry black tea. I’ve tried quite a few others and none of them get the strawberry quite right—at worst, sometimes it’s slightly chemical. This one actually tastes like strawberry, and the black tea comes through, too.

My first cup of the day – this is really a good tea, which is especially surprising to me since it’s a bagged tea. I like it a lot.

It is bold and the bergamot is light. Smooth and delicious.

K S

Try their Darjeeling. Equally good.

Starting my day with this (yes, I slept in this morning).

It is a bold, brisk tea, a good choice for the first tea of the day. It has a very rich, well rounded flavor, although it is almost on the verge of being bitter (it isn’t exactly bitter, but, there are hints of it that suggest that if I had brewed it a little longer it would have been bitter). Next time I brew it I will have to go for 2 1/2 minutes instead of the full 3 minutes and see how that works out.

But… I will say this, for a bagged tea – this one is not bad. It has a lot of gusto! A nice one to enjoy at breakfast, it is good with a little honey (or agave) and it would also be very nice with milk although I didn’t want that today. The bergamot is very distant in this, but not absent, and the flavor develops as I continue to sip.

It has a lot of depth. A very nice, rich tea. Good!

My very first Ahmad Tea and I am excited! Their press kit info is wonderfully designed, btw! As for this tea…it’s a bit bitter but naturally bitter – typical for some Black Currants. I prefer the juicer kind of currants, however. But for bittery-type this is pretty good! It’s very flavorful for a bagged tea. Nice flavored black for a standby, I suppose.

This Earl Grey is better than I remember – but then that could be that it’s been a couple days since I had an Earl Grey so I’m just craving it. I don’t know… anyways… here is my full-length review of this tea, if you wish to read it: http://sororiteasisters.com/2010/08/01/earl-grey-from-ahmad-tea/

Drinking the last that I have of this tea… it’s a decent Earl Grey. I found that by brewing it less time, the flavor is a bit smoother, it’s less astringent, and there is an interesting citrusy tart note in the finish that I don’t remember previously.
