I really didn’t like this and the other 2 blends in this chai collection. I felt like they were far too sweet, leaving nothing but the sweet taste and oily mouth feel.

I really didn’t like this and the other 2 blends in this chai collection. I felt like they were far too sweet, leaving nothing but the sweet taste and oily mouth feel. This one was perhaps a little creamier than the other two, but the sugar makes the other flavours barely detectable.

The notes of this blend are fruity, creamy and sour rolled into one. Is it weird to say that it smells like rhubarb and custard sweets? Probably, but it totally does! Jasmine Poached Pears tastes fruity, with a light jasmine flavour that combines with a tickle of grassy sencha. As a massive lover of jasmine, my heart ached for a strong jasmine note, so the gentleness was initially disappointing. But, the more I worked my way through the blend, the more I appreciated the balance of fruit and florals. Not exactly what I was expecting, but I ended up loving it!

To me, this didn’t smell like banana bread or even banana! More like chai a la caramel. I find I’ve been increasingly going off rooibos, particularly in times of high stress, because the aroma seems to be triggering headaches (anyone else get this? Or do I have a weird anomaly?) Also caffeine, I need caffeine… Overall, I wasn’t certain about this blend. I didn’t seem to hate it or love it.

There’s an earthy goodness to this tea that makes it different. It’s way more of a savoury tea than a sweet chocolate blend. Ceylon, coffee and dark chocolate are present flavours, but none are overpowering or off-putting (especially to someone, like me, who doesn’t like coffee). I enjoyed this blend a little, and I loved the caffeine boost, but ultimately I prefer my tea without coffee!

Treacle Sponge is the smell of nostalgia! Anyone else remember those sticky toffee puddings that came in a tin? That’s what this tea smells like to me! I remember my mom would make them with custard, as an after-dinner treat. For anyone who didn’t get this wonderful experience as a child, you can now experience it in liquid form. It shouldn’t be a surprise that this tea smells sweet, cakey and treacle-y. And the flavour? A punch of vanilla, slight green tea notes and a lingering cake-like finish. It smells great and tastes great, but it also looks beautiful. It’s like a mini firework of tea. It actually turned out to be my favourite of the collection.

Aroma: Empyreumatic and woody, think wood-smoke, ash, tobacco, sawdust and cedar. There’s also a faint sweetness to Raw Dazzle that’s a bit like burnt sugar or maple syrup.

Flavour: The starting notes are burnt and sweet, a combination of caramel, tobacco and dry wood, moving quickly into a smoky flavour and a lasting tobacco-ness.

Tasting Note: I have an affinity for smoky tea so I really enjoyed Ripe Marvel, both when I tried it in the summer and the multiple times since receiving a full sample. However, smokiness in pu-erh is considered an indicator of lesser quality and can be caused by improper storage or fast-track drying techniques.

drank Ripe Marvel by TEASPEC
259 tasting notes

Aroma: Like wet bark, leather and rotting undergrowth.

Flavour: All the notes of this tea are deep, dark and savoury. There are lots of earthy and wooded tones; damp wood, undergrowth, bark, a musk of peat, and rotting undergrowth.

Tasting Note: My words make this tea sound almost pretty but, in the end, getting through a cup was more manageable than enjoyable. I initially received a 1 cup sample at the beginning of summer and liked it. However, since receiving a larger sample and being able to taste Ripe Marvel multiple times, I really struggled to finish each cup. As my experience with tea grows, my flavour preferences and observations develop. However, my taste buds may not be the culprit for my change in opinion! Perfecting the production of pu-erh can be difficult, instead this could be down to inconsistent quality between batches. Either way, I became more reluctant to return to it and when I did, I started noticing a sludgy feeling in my stomach. Not good! After reading up on pu-erh, many sources suggested this could indicate improper fermentation and an imbalance of bacteria!

These pearls are basically the crème de la crème of jasmine tea, particularly of the leaves available in the UK market. These pearl are super fragrant, without being sickening and the flavour is similar; a juxtaposition of punchy, delicate floral. Some jasmine tea can leave a very dry mouth feel and slight astringency, but these pearls only have the slightest dryness in the finish, making for a more enduring cuppa. I managed to steep these 3 times before they had fully unfurled and started to really lose their flavour!

Final Thoughts: These pearls are truly superior! I’m not sure how anyone could turn back after tasting these, other than the price tag, but can you really put a price on good tea?
