5 Tasting Notes

Hey guys, my sincerest utmost apologies for not updating my tea findings in a long time. I would also like to extend my apologies for this elongated post you’re about to read, not that you’re complaining, as I’m quite confident that you would see this as an opportunity to brew a cup of tea or two. So, if that’s what you’re going to do, it would make my words happy to be soaked up in the reservoir of your mind.

I know I don’t need to explain my absence, but I’d just like to share with you why I haven’t been updating in a while. You see, the year 2014 AD had been a rather sublime year for me and most of the people I’ve inter-acted with. I was doing my final year in college, and things were very hectic, deadlines here, art shows there, family affairs everywhere, in a nutshell, it was pretty rough. But I’m more than happy to say that I’ve made it through college after a 3 year stint. Wow! Big deal. The stepping stone for the epitome of life huh? Now I can get a job, get married, buy a house and have children! Yeah right. Life means more to me than that. I’m sure you’d agree. (No offence to the happily married couples I hope.) Why I don’t see the “epitome” of life as such a big deal, is a story for another day.

The year 2014 AD, as I said was sublime. I met some very interesting people; I learnt new things, formed new friendships. Friendships that actually mattered. Conversations that the universe will cherish. During the roller coaster ride of 2014, I spent most of my time alone, no, I had company, the mundane company of standard tea, from supermarkets (which I absolutely abhor) and of course, the divine company of Nurya Khanyile. (Nurya-Illumination, wisdom of God. Khanyile-Light, Lit :( Southern African) Nurya is a beautiful Taiwanese ginseng bonsai whom I have the best of conversations with and rely on for inspiration when it is no-where to be found, She is the light of my apartment and life.

I recently discovered such and an awesome flea market here in Durban, South Africa, anyone and everyone is more than welcome to sell merchandise there, so it’s not really your typically average flea market. There are mainly clothes there, food, miscellaneous objects, books, art, then there are LP vinyl’s (which I also compulsively collect) There’s nothing like a good vinyl, a good book and an exceptional cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon I tell you . But, on one of my days of despondency, as I had ultimately run out of tea, I decided to take a walk to this market I speak of, and buy some records. Nothing out of the Norm, I found some interesting records, and as I was ready to go back home, I noticed a large number of people concentrated in a singular space, so, I remained curious and I headed over to them to find out what the ruckus was about. Everyone was waving their hands vigorously and screaming prices at the top of their lungs, “must be an auction” I said to myself. While all of this chaos is going on, I’m trying to get through to the front to see what is being auctioned, some people wouldn’t let me pass, they were so fixated on giving me dirty looks, calling me rude, but honestly, I didn’t give a damn. I hadn’t had tea in a week. Truth is, I just wanted to get to the front and actually see with my own eyes what the fuss was about, then leave, I was hungry too! So I did the right and only logical thing, which was to shove myself and actually make it to the front!

After stepping on so many annoyed peoples’ shoes, I make it to the front, Turns out, it was an auction indeed. For appliances and other things not worth mentioning. But on this table, that everyone had been crowding around for the last couple of twenty minutes, lays a mysterious brown wooden box. Silently. A box, I presumed that this was what everyone had been raging on about, “but what, is, in this box?” I ask myself. Usually, I’d wait for someone else or the person in charge to hold and open it, but in this case, I just couldn’t help myself. I turned it towards me, unlatched it and opened it. Any guessing what was inside this mysterious brown box? You probably guessed it! Dear tea reader, what was in this box was something entirely amazing and revolutionary to my tea world.

This box was composed of 9 compartments, each consisting of twelve Sachets of Tea bags, all different types of teas to be precise. I was over the moon! This was such a rare find for me, and I felt like a Ten year old that was locked up in a candy store. I asked the auctioneer what the price was for it, hoping it would be within my budget, as I had already spent a good fortune on LP records, and there were many people there before me as well, so I was really hoping he’d make my day. For a good two seconds, I waited with baited breath for him to say something ridiculous! This was the possibly the longest two seconds of my life, so long infact, that I had already devised a plan in my infinite mind to distract him with someone as I ran away with this jewel, I had also made multiple contingency plans too! Crazy what you can do with two seconds these days. So I was ready and waiting. Jokes! I hope what I said hasn’t made you change your mind about coming to Durban South Africa; it’s a really beautiful place to be. The warm weather, the beach, the beautiful women and drop dead handsome guys (I’m comfortable with my sexuality so). But I digress.

So, after this two second time frame, the man says very quickly “fifty rands” (R50) (he’s Indian, Indians talk fast) the exchange rate is R1=$8/9.
Fifty what! As he was explaining and trying to market it, I cut him. “I’ll take it!” Yes, I was surprised! And I didn’t hesitate. Because that was a bargain from out of space! A once in a life time deal. I was expecting maybe R150. Everyone around me was just as surprised, I remember they looked at me like I was crazy. I must say, I’d never felt like a tea addict until then, but you know what, I still didn’t give damn. I was happily mellow, they were confused. “It’s just tea, mxm” they said. Suckers! Haha!

I made my way back to my nest, first thing I did,(yeah, I know I’m getting predictable, but you know what? I don’t give a damn.)  I turned the stove on, boiled some water, played my brand new second hand vinyl and read a book for the rest of the day. (The tipping point) a book given to me by my design lecturer, who is probably one of the coolest most genuine souls I’ve ever come to know. It’s rated a good book by mainstream media, but it’s a bunch of hogwash if you ask me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good read, there are some interesting stories and concepts in it. And… uhh, who am I kidding, it’s a terrible book! He stopped reading it half-way. I didn’t listen to him because i’m so stubborn, so I read past where he stopped, hoping that it would get better, little did know. I stopped ¾ of the way, something at the back of my mind told me to carry on, pfft! Yeah, right. Not a chance, I had already wasted a good couple of days on it, so I wasn’t willing to spend any more time on it, but if you’re interested in the ripple effects of life and epidemics of tipping communication scales, then it’s probably the book for you. But In this brown box I brought home with me, there were nine teas, which are not necessarily worth spending time reviewing because they are standard popular teas, however, if there is a tea out of these nine teas you’d like me to review and rate, I’d be more than happy to do it, just because it would be an opportunity to drink tea. Otherwise, I won’t waste our time. These nine teas consist of Chamomile (which my mother absolutely loves), Lemon, Honey & Ginger, Green Tea with mint, Green Tea with Jasmine, Organic Earl grey, Organic Black tea, Celluli Herbal tea, Green Tea and rooibos with added Ginseng. I’ll give all these teas a standard rating of 52.
In conclusion, keep following your tea senses.

Thank you. Fellow Tea lover, for taking your time to read this post, I’ll be back with more, finds hopefully not so long from now.
Peace, Love, Oneness , drink your tea in silence

Ok, first of all.. I havn’t been here for a while.. Been wanting to come here and update and Share the awesome teas I’ve been having, hoping you’ll try them out too…

This tea, I dnt know if I’ll call this ‘tea’, I’ll say why in just a bit. I accidently bought it while looking for tea tree shampoo(ironic much)? Anyway, while buying shampoo, I got sidetracked, by what exactly? You guessed it. I remember thinking how I’d like some Ginseng tea, but not mass produced. How nearly impossible where I was (in a mall) anyway, Some lady recommended it to me.. When I got home, I opened it, and it was woodsy, bits and pieces. “excellent” I said.. I opened it up, and I smelt, literally rain.. I kid you not. I was instantly in love.. What I had was not just tea but medicine and a snack, finely chopped up Ginseng root. Anyway, I chopped it up futher (the finer, the richer th taste) and placed half a teaspoon of it in a cold water pot, then switched to med heat, just before it boiled, I turned it off and let it simmer till it was cool, then turned th heat at max, brought to boil then turned off again and let it simmer down. Got the tea pot out, strainer. Poured it all in.. And I let it cool down a little further (about 1min). I sat down and poured myself a cup in silence and took a sip. The first thing I noticed was it’s rich woodsy, earthy, very faint spicy flavour and it’s smoothness..

It’s quite a potent tea. It is pure Ginseng. Quite nothing like the Ginseng tea farms that mass produce. It’s wild. I was taken away with this tea.. The best way to describe it would honestly be.. Hmmm, let me see.. U know when it rains? And u smell that earthy smell of the soil just after it started raining? Now, imagine having that smell in a cup and drinking it.. Mmmmmm.. Had it not been that I found this tea in a mall along with stacks of others, I would’ve given it a rating well above 92.. None the less, it’s an excellent choice of tea if u want to relax, think and clear your mind. Besides it’s popularity of, you know what…;) I’ll always have a tea like this in my house.. And the best part about ginseng root, you can chew it, like gum.. Like having rain in your mouth on a sunny day.. Yum:) I’ll post a pic of it soon.. Peace peace peace, one love..

There’s an Indian shop just up the road from my nest, it sells all sorts of things, from incense, food & spices. I was making a fish curry stew one day and realised I had run out of chillies to taste with.. So off I went to this mystical shop, I got what I needed and on my way to the till, I got distracted by what I’d call a minor exhibition of randomly selected not so interesting tea, but I saw this little box that cost R12 (R7=1$. So you can do the math) anyway, I said why not? Would be exciting to start off with some chai before my indian dish. Returned to my nest and prepared a cup.. Or two.. Maybe three:)? Can’t remember… I do remember the smell of burning curry though. Haha… I was literally obliviously relaxed.. I mean, I was irie.. Frankly, subtle sedation would describe the state I was in… I felt reawakened and energised to cook again and get to some work.. Not a bad choice at all… Recommend it as a ‘take a break’ kind of tea.. Just don’t add sugar or milk.. Yes, it is tea bagged:( but don’t let that discourage you from trying this spicy tea… Not bad at all:)

HIGH RECOMMENDATION!!!

At first, I felt rather aloof about this tea when I first tried it out, I had only bought it because it was ‘Green’ and partly because I wanted widen my tea drinking horizons. To me, it was very average I had it with no sugar (never use milk for tea, defeats the entire purpose of drinking tea), after 3 cups it left me feeling rather (sluggish), due to that, it spent a lot of time in my cupboard untouched.. Until I ran out of tea, so it was it and I staring at each other “what th heck!” I boiled some water and prepared it. This time, I addded some sugar… I never regreted buying it… It is one of the smoothest enjoyable teas I’ve ever had. You can hardly taste the health of the green as it is carried away by the sweet scent of berries… One day I left my place rushing to the art studio, I couldn’t take my mind off it. I returned and it was obviously cold now.. I said what the heck, I added a slice of lemon and drank it like ice tea.. Delicious.. Prepared another pot and this time I added some sugar and ginger to spice it up.. I was literally in heaven.. I drank 3 tea pots back to back in a row, that’s how silk, soothing and delicious it was.. And the best part is, it’s also a cooling beverage! What more could one possibly ask for?
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tea!!!

Want to start a party, just add some Ginger root:)
Going to have some now..
Happy tea drinking days

After one cup, I thought ‘’Not a bad replica of the chinese one I bought at a chinese market.’’ It holds a good wulong imitation but somewhat tastes more like green tea.. Does’nt have the authentic rich aroma and taste of wulong.. If you’re interested in trying out ‘oolong’ I recommend not buying this brand, infact, refuse to buy the tea-bagged tea.. Find a chinese shop and get the leaves… Only then will you enjoy this tea… If not, guess you enjoy having 2Dimensional boring tea..

Loose leaf tea is best! I love roasty oolongs which age well in the dry climate of the Rocky Mountains where I live at 5000ft. Glad to see you here!

Bio

I’m a God fearing Nazarite silent tea lover…
I’m a painter and poet
I enjoy cooking, I also practice martial arts. I love the earth and animals.. To me, it doesn’t matter whether your’e grey, pink, blue, yellow, green, orange, crimson, turqoise etc… A cup of tea will always restore us to our natural same true colour… One heart.

I rate my tea according to the following criteria..

1:It’s ability to have it’s own unique effect on my mind, body and spirit-Can it heal, sedate, relax, rejuvinate one?

2:It’s ability to inspire me to create

3:It’s scarcity

4:It’s flexibility- can it be experimented with other ingredients?
Can I also enjoy it cold (even though some teas are best when drank hot from the pot)

5:It’s unique taste that will have me addicted causing me to sneak around at 3a.m to brew a pot.

With that said, this is how I rate my tea:

0-20: This was a very bad idea, I should’ve trusted my instincts. Waste of money, time and water. Perhaps this company would be better off purifying fuel. How dare they take chances and sell diesel to us!

21-30- Wow, this is just straight up horrible, not disgusting, just really bad tea.. I’d rather drink warm coca-cola and call it a day. It was nearly tea. Not as bad as diesel tea. I guess I just have to be grateful that I have some form of ‘tea’.

31-40- Honestly, it’s not the worst kind I’ve had, I’ll give the farmers of this tea some credit for their effort, (well tried guys, keep going! You’ll get there one day.)

41-50- It’s good to know that I can add some of my own ingredients to this tea and make it taste better, still not the best tea in the world, but not that bad, I just can’t drink it without added stuff, my day will be ruined if I do.. I’ll just put it at the back of my cupboard, save it for desperate hard times..

51-65- hmmm… This tea is what I would call a textbook tea.. It’s somewhat balanced, does’nt have any strengths, neither does it have any blurring weaknesses.. Perhaps it’s too balanced(rubbing chin with eyebrow up) hmmm… There’s something dubious here… Shall we have another pot and find out what it is?

65-75- now you see, this is some good tea, I would gladly offer my frienemies this tea, it’s livening.. Akward silences can easily be broken jus by mentioning something about this tea, even if what is being said is repeated.. I’d curl up on my couch and read a book with this stuff awesome.

75-85- woah!!! This is just great! So this is what being alive feels like, sure am glad to be alive at this present moment! I feel awesome, Irie and blessed! Let’s go make something! I’d carry this tea everywhere I go, I’d give random people samples.. (Unless it’s loose leaf)

85-95- This tea is quite unique, it is very valuable, I won’t say much about it because that’s how sacred it is. I struggled to find it. Even though it would be practical and wise to drink it sparingly by counting each leaf and measure the water, I slowly slip away.. I might just blow it all!(Face of a tea addict) It’s just too good to be true. Tastes even better with ingredients! It’s best to leave me alone when I’m drinking this sacred tea, rather talk to the trees instead, they’ll overstand you better.

96-100:-This is a once in a life time Loose Leaf Tea. You only find this kind of tea when your’e not looking for it.. I would’nt even dare add extra ingredients to it!! This tea is the off spring of very rare ancient teas. meditate with it in tranquility up in the mountains.
