It’s super mild. Definitely more of an afternoon tea than a kick-in-the-pants morning tea (hey, someone dropping coffee again can hope!).

I can tell it’s a Chinese black, but it’s not terribly complex. IDK. It’s nice, but I don’t think I’d go after this one myself.

I’m doing an experiment. That experiment is weaning myself off of coffees every day. Hahaha. We’ll see how that works.

I needed something strong. Something flavourful. Something good with eggnog. And this tea is excellent.

If I could find it locally, I’d totally buy it. So delicious. But I do have some other strong black teas, so I think I’ll be OK. :)

I can’t remember if this was a sample gift or a purchase… it’s been a while. :D But it is unusual, I mean, 1000 year old trees? And as a black tea? Ok. I’ll try.

It smells a little smoky. A little like an Assam. A little like chocolate-dirt. The tea is really a very pretty amber colour.

Oh, this is quite sweet. I rinsed, and my first steep is about 10-15 seconds. It has a hint of carbs to it, but nothing like the honey black I just tried. It’s also almost floral-grapey like a Darjeeling, although it doesn’t have the perfumey notes of a very fresh/green leafed Darjeeling. And there’s some smoke in the background, but it’s more like tobacco leaves that have been warmed, than true smoke.

It’s also quite thin. Maybe that’s because of the shorter steep, but it’s somewhat unexpected.

I’ll have to drink more of this tea tomorrow, it’s not really what I was looking for tonight. But it’s really interesting.

It is labelled “1000 years old tree” but I checked the website, and based on the pictures, it looks like what I linked. The flavour profile seems in the same ballpark as well.

So I finally got this tea. Finally. And I’m going to share the love. :)

5g in about 120ml water. Short steeps.

(Spoiler: I like the Honey Black and Li Shan Black from Green Terrace way better.)

This is… really carby. Like plain plantain chips. Astringent, even though I’m only doing short steeps. Malty. Fairly rich, because of the heavy carbs. But astringent. And not honey-sweet IMO. Not compared to other teas out there. There’s a bit of bite from spice at the back of the sip – maybe white pepper. It smells a lot like hay. I just dipped my nose in the mug, ick.

So while it’s not bad, there are others out there at a similar price point that are much tastier to me.

(195F for the rinse and first steep, 208F for subsequent steeps. I got… 4 steeps before I was done.)

After going through all my teas yesterday, I put a few I need to work on finishing out in a bowl. This is one of them.

I’m sad, because I love the Hattialli Assams, but my parents tea shop hasn’t been able to get it in. That was my only other source!

Anyways, this is delicious and strong and fruity and malty, and an eggnog latte. :)

As far as Christmas Teas, my dad got me 2 African teas (both quite different!) and more Rungagora – so now I have 200g of that. LOL. Disregarding duplicates, I’m now at 268 teas, with about 70 (estimated) of them being gongfu capable samples – puerh, black teas, oolongs. Of course, I have two other small bins of samples as well as all the other larger quantities. The only ones I have ~100g of are Rungagora, So Long and Thanks for all the Licorice, Chandernagor, and Noel a Paris. :) Oh, and the puerh bricks and cakes. But we’ll just ignore those since they never go bad… right?

What! I had no idea your parents had a tea shop. I knew they were also into tea, but…

So glad I’m not in your position in terms of volume! I feel overwhelmed as it is with my 60-ish teas. Keep putting off a damn Bayswater order because I want to be down to 50 before that happens.

Also, well over half of the teas are samples, and many more are within sipdown range. So it feels like a lot (I weighed tins too btw and didn’t bother subtracting them, if you saw the weight on FB), but I don’t think it is. The samples are overwhelming, but my actual collection is much less overwhelming than what it was.

This didn’t work for me cold, but I’m having it hot today, and it’s alright.

The flavours are “tropical”-ish. I added a bit of blackberry honey because it needed some sweetening, and I need to use up some of the things I have in the cupboard.

I thought I’d like this a lot more, based on the smell. But I don’t.

It’s always so disappointing when the smell doesn’t transfer to the taste.


It does, but not in a way that works for me. I thought it was a green rooibos base like Golden Honeydew, but it steeps up quite a different colour. So I’m thinking the base is changing the taste of this one more than the green rooibos changes the taste of the other.

3g of this left, so I mixed it with 3g of the Li Shan Black.


I do prefer the Li Shan Black, I just feel the flavours are more in line with my personal tastes. It’s rich and dark the way I’ve steeped it though, with no bitterness and only a touch of the good kind of astringency. :)

I’m updating my tea spreadsheet tonight. OMG. So many teas to add to it. D: Hopefully there will be a lot of teas to remove from it at some point as well…

Honestly for the Green Terrace Teas, the Li Shan is way more rich and thick and sweet than the honey black. IMO. :)

Yeah, there were samples available a WHILE back. And VariaTEA dropped off a couple packets when I was in Toronto. I kinda yoinked them. :D I would totally buy the Li Shan Black, but I couldn’t justify it. And now, after inventorying, I can’t justify it even more…

Hmmm…. not bad. Fairly hazelnutty, but not like the coffee syrup. More like the cookies my mom used to make out of the hazelnuts we gathered from the back yard.

I do like this, but it’s not an absolute favourite.

Sadly this isn’t for me. I was really careful steeping due to the greenness of the leaves, but alas, that didn’t work.

It’s actually quite green tasting, maybe a little like spinach water. And it’s pretty astringent, making my teeth and tongue feel weird. The lemon is fairly bright and citrusy, but also reminiscent of lemon cleaning products. I think it would have been helped by some lemon peel pieces in with the leaves, to make the lemon a little more truly lemon.

Unfortunately, I tend to not like darjeelings because of the fact that they can be so finicky and they are so green and astringent. I was hoping this would be different for me, as the dry leaves smell like lemon and spring.

Oh well. I’m glad I got to try. Thanks so much for sharing!

Tummy is upset, possibly glutened at the pizza lunch today (there were special pizzas). It’s not too severe, so I’m treating with puerh and pineapple.

I finished my Special Dark off with a couple of really long steeps, to squeeze all that I could out of the leaves. And now I’ve moved on to this tea.

Om nom. So good. (PS. I measured my favourite kyusu, and it’s 145ml, though that’s with a tea that doesn’t expand as much. I’d get much less water in the pot with an oolong or a loose moonlight white.)

I rinsed, then forgot about it (I’ve gotta pack for tomorrow!), and now I’m doing steeps just until it “looks right”. Haha.

So good. It’s quite thick. A little wet wood tasting, but not much. Just what my tummy needs. I think it gets sweeter as it gets steeped. And I’m pretty sure it’d take a long steep if I really wanted to. And it’s a little floral, I think. And slippery. Interesting.

Honestly I don’t remember what I thought of this at the Tea Festival – only that it was tasty and I needed to buy it. I have no regrets!
