Not good, not good, not good… I feel cold coming on! Must resist all this sickness around me!

This chamomile is wonderful and soothing… at least it makes me forget about that tickle in my throat for a little while.

I’ve been waiting to break into this ever since I received my order a week or so ago. Lately I’ve been really intrigued by the pu’erhs and oolongs (regular oolongs, milk oolongst and aged oolongs) and my appetite is only increasing. There is simply such a range of flavours and aromas in these teas, it’s truly remarkable.

Today is also a perfect day to stay home and try a brand new hot tea. It’s -20C outside and with wind chill is less than -30C. My daughter is home with a cold, watching teletoons on TV and I’m hoping my body will be strong enough to refuse her cold virus. After all, I’m taking my vitamin D religiously but lately I have not been getting enough sleep so I’m a tad worried.. but only a tad.

On to this tea…. The dry leaves smell slightly vegetal, more like a forest floor with little mushroom thrown here and there.

I break away 5 grams of the tea ( I love doing this!) from the piece of brick that was sent to me, I rinse the leaves twice over the boiling water and then steep the tea for 2 minutes.

The result is beautiful reddish brown, clear liquid that smells musty, woody, like a forest after the rain. I take a sip and…. ahhhh… this is smooth… so smooth! It tastes just like what I think good shu should taste like: full body, sweet and earthy and it instantly transports me into an enchanted forest… Delish…

I steep it again this time for 3 min. The colour of the liquid is now darker brown. I taste everything I already tasted in the original steep but maybe a little more intense. There is a slight tingle that has developed at the back of my tongue towards the end of the sip.

Overall very yummy… I’ll continue steeping to see where it takes me.

Sipdown!

Got this as a sample with one of my DT orders. I was really happy because I actually wanted to try it.

I like it. It smells lovely and tastes good too. Actually I find it quite delicious. Brown sugar and molasses, ginger and spice. It’s definitely something I wouldn’t mind having around.

drank Silver Needle by Teavana

There is only a little bit left of this tea at the bottom of the tin. Maybe another serving or two. This silver needle was the first one I ever tried and pretty much the only one. I won’t be restocking this time though because it’s time to branch out and try others. Teavivre organic Silver Needle is on its way…

For the time being though, this one is ever so satisfying. It has never disappointed me. It’s delicious and aromatic. It’s flowers and honey. It’s so good. :)

TheTeaFairy

I’ve never had teavana’s, but i’ve had Teavivre’s and it is fantastic if you’re into delicate but still flavourful teas.

Kamyria

Oh, I’m so into them TeaFairy… I holding my hopes high for Teavivre one. :)

It’s freezing and windy outside today… The snow is blowing across the farmlands leaving the roads and my view partially obscured. Inside, the fire in my fireplace is dancing happily and there is a hot cup of tea in my hand.

Chrysanthemum Pu’er

Beautiful, delicious and fragrant… and did I mention hot? The cold has nothing on me. What a joy. :)

TheTeaFairy

Same here weather wise, and also fireplace wise :-)

Sipdown!

Got this as a sample from DT couple of weeks ago and I’ve been wanting to try it ever since.

Upon steeping, the color of the liquid is intensely red. Taste wise it’s yummy although quite tart. I can taste the strawberry and hibiscus the most.

This is one of those tisanes that I have to be in a mood for and today was not a good day. I should have known, but my curiosity took over. I’ll refrain from rating for now.

TheTeaFairy

Oh, I thought this was discontinued…Guess they revived it or maybe I’m just confused…That’s more likely, lol!

Continuing with first experiences this week. This morning it’s the Wuyi Mountain Big Red Robe from Verdant Tea. I got this as a sample with my last order. My first roasted oolong ever.

I really don’t know what to think. This tea has brought out flavours I never tasted before in a tea. I’m still trying to figure them out.

The dry tea smelled vegetal and roasted… roasted vegetables is more like it.

I rinsed the leaves then steeped it for 1 minute over boiling water. The resulting liquid is golden brown with a slightly floral scent. I also smell typical oolong and there is also a little sweetness to it.

I take a sip. Whoa! Doesn’t taste anything like it smells… I get seriously roasty flavour with some caramel and chocolate. I almost want to say roasted chocolate but there is no such thing… lol

There is something else in it, I can’t put my finger on. Overall, interesting.. very different.

Steep it again…

2 minutes over a boiling water this time. The chocolate taste is almost gone and now it’s mostly roasted, nutty flavour with a tiny bit of astringency tingling the back side of my tongue towards the end of the sip. This tea is complex and tasty. The more I sip, the more I like it.

Overall I got 3 steeps out of it and I’m pretty sure I could have gotten another one but it was time for dinner and then switch to something else. I’m quite excited to try it again in a few days and see if I pick up any other flavours… or if I figure out what is that note I keep tasting that I can’t quite identify…

drank Sichuan Caravan by Verdant Tea

I couldn’t resist trying this one after dinner. It was burning a hole in my mind ever since I realized it had licorice root in it and I ordered it before I realized how much I dislike licorice root in a tea. Well… let me correct that… how much I could dislike licorice root in a tea if done in a bad way. Part of me however had faith in Verdant Tea that it will be drinkable.

The dry tea smelled mostly of shu and ginger. Once I steeped it for 2 minutes over boiling water (after rinsing it), the ginger scent diminished a little and I could smell more of the earthy, woody shu.

Taking a sip… the moment of truth.

Win! If licorice is there, it’s blended in a most tasteful way because I don’t detect it much. I’m also not a huge fan of ginger but it’s so well balanced here as well. Everything works in this blend.. It’s earthy, woody, sweet and spicy. It’s also very smooth. Well done!

I like it.

Another tea adventure. This week is the week for the firsts. :D

I’ve never had a milk oolong so I was very excited when it arrived with my DT order yesterday afternoon.

You know that anticipation when you’re just about to tear open the package of the tea you were waiting for? I love it!

Wow, just wow… the dry tea smells sweet and milky. It’s hard to believe that it’s not flavoured. Is it really not flavoured or is somebody lying to me?

Just as I’m writing this note I have to go back, pop open the bag and smell it again. Yup… sweet and milky.

I steep it for 4 minutes at 82C. The result is pale yellow liquid with delicate milky aroma. The tea tastes like it smells… creamy and delicate, butter and milk. It’s smooth, so smooth and there is a note of sweetness to it. It’s hard to believe that straight tea can taste like that. I have to google this.

Time for a re-steep.

Re-steeped tea tastes just as good as the original steep if not better. It seems more awake now. Delish.

The subject of milk oolong got me so perplexed I decided to research further and I found this interesting review with comments. Take what you want from it. This tea’s flavour is either all natural or receives a little help from the producers and same goes for other milk oolongs out there. However it happens, it’s delicious and I’m not lactose intolerant.

Having said that, now I’m on the mission to try other milk oolongs and compare. I believe a sample of Teavivre milk oolong is on the way.

Well, now I know I have to obtain this somehow.
Do you think this would be suitable for someone who is severely lactose intolerant? Most teas don’t bother me – one has, Cocoa Canela, but other than that, none – but if this one has milk added to it it probably definitely will have an effect.
Do you know for certain if this one has any added milk?

Kamyria

No, I don’t know that for sure. It’s not in the ingredients and as you can see other people are trying to find out the truth as well… I really don’t know what to think…

Kamyria

Come to think of it.. I would be interested to know if anyone with lactose intolerance on Steepster ever tried this tea…

Profile

Bio

It’s been a while since I joined Steepster and I think it’s time to write up a bio.

I’m a stay at home, married mom with 5 kids, most of them grown up. Only one remains with us now, my 7 year old sunshine which I push out of the house to school every morning and it’s not an easy thing to do.

I’m an avid gardener during a growing season and my goal is to grow most of the food we eat and save some for winter too. I’m also an artist and a huge nerd. I read books, I play computer games. My very first game was World of Warcraft (was addicted to it solid for a year, lol), then came Skyrim, Minecraft (with my 7 year old) and few others less memorable along the way.

I began drinking tea on regular basis just over 2 years ago when I decided to kick my morning coffee habit. It wasn’t pretty… I couldn’t function for 3 days straight but survived. A year ago I discovered loose tea and found Steepster… The rest is history.

Some of the staples in my cupboard are Dragonwell green tea, Japanese sencha, Silver Needle white tea, green roobois, darjeeling and pu’erh. I also drink variety of flavored teas for fun and I like to order tisanes and mix them with straight teas for even more variety.

Recently I found out how much I love oolong so will be stocking up on that as well.

There are few other tea lovers in my family: my mom and dad, my oldest daughter, my son and my youngest 7 year old. She loves when I try out different teas and I always have to remember to make enough for her to have a little taste.
