33 Tasting Notes

I liked this one! It’s nicely floral in taste and aroma, but there’s extra depth – as the name suggests, it reminds me of plums. It also has pretty decent lasting power as I’ve made several cups while sitting here working.

Update: this stuff also makes a terrific iced tea. Seriously, makes me wish it was summer and I could buy bags of every variety of stone fruit and their hybrids I could want.

A comfort tea! Straightforward, tasty and hard to go wrong. Predominantly chocolatey, but a particularly strong cup starts feeling a little more like coffee. You can’t make it wrong, works nicely in a gaiwan, grandpa style or a strainer in a mug… I’ve definitely noticed some differences from year to year (or autumn vs spring), so it’s worth testing (and maybe compare to the Laoshan gongfu black) before getting too carried away.

Yesterday’s at-work tea, just the right amount of green for my tastes. It’s nicely balanced with the sweet cream/butter and floral and just a little bit of a savory green edge. I can’t quite decide which direction the greenness leans – the description says “vegetal/straw aroma,” or “savory scone,” but I’m not quite sure it falls neatly into any particular flavor for me. Whatever it is, it makes a good tea for work; it’s interesting enough to entice me to make another cup, but not distractingly complex. I’m glad I got to try this one in the tea club, as it’s probably not something I would have thought to pick up on my own.

Previously tried this one in a gaiwan and enjoyed but wasn’t overenthusiastic about this one. Might have just been me, though, because I don’t drink a whole lot of green teas and might just not have given it the care it needed. Tried again today grandpa style because I didn’t have a whole lot of time. I liked it better this time, but still didn’t like it enough to acquire more. It is very sweet and creamy, but light. It also has a nice nuttiness to it, though not overwhelming. I’m not getting anything floral as described, but again, maybe it’s me.

Drinking a sample of this one in an attempt to make Mondays better…

I got this one as a sample with my order of Lord of the Lakes…it’s a very different tea, so I’m glad to have tried them both. Huron is sweet, but not chocolately like Lord of the Lakes can be. I can see where the description of mushroom notes comes from, it tastes more like things growing in the forest than the forest itself, if that makes sense (and would probably go very well with a bowl of roasted vegetables). It also has strong minerality and a dry feel to it. I like the sweet/stone contrast, but it feels like it’s lacking something for me…Overall, a fairly mellow and savory, good-tasting tea, if not likely to be a staple for me.

Tea interests me because it intersects so many of my other interests: biology, geology, craft, and cooking. Plus it tastes good and making a cup gives me something to do with my hands while reading.
