How i got it: Bought it

Experience: The first smell to this tea gives an impression that reminds very much of a Twinings’ Lady Grey: citric aroma (orange peel, maybe?), clove and probably cinnamon and nutmeg, which makes it suitable for cold days. Its base tea is a light variety, to the likes of a Darjeeling tea, but i couldn’t say for sure. This tea and the added flavors make a balanced mix of a mild intensity and some astringency that is good, but lacks a bit of taste definition and duration. Aside from that, one could say it’s like an Lady Grey more natural in its scents, while not that great in its base tea. Good overall.

Would i buy it again?: Not sure about it

drank Ceylon by Mill Hill
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Tried it at my parents’ house.

Experience: Well, i could say this tea is pretty much unknown here in Chile. Checking a box in the supermarket I found later this is a sub-branch of St. Claire’s Teas, which seems to be more recognized. Anyway.. this tea has a mildly-intense, mainly toasted smell, marking a difference from the usually fruity standard Ceylon. In the flavor department, it falls between a Supremo and a TeeFix, with earth-y and toasted notes, and almost no nuances. I can sense a hint of fruitness at the end of the sip. Light to medium intensity, relatively defined taste, but not very lasting. An average level tea.

Would i buy it?: I don’t think so. For everyday tea, Lipton’s Yellow Label is the baseline.

Si buscas un té fuerte, descarta esta opción. Un té muy suave, de aroma ligero. No me gustó :(.
A diferencia de Chris, pondría a este té entre un Emblem y un Mildred.

drank Earl Grey by Dilmah
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Bought it (Dilmah’s Variety Pack)

Experience: Last tea of five in the pack (I reviewed the fourth tea in the pack, English Afternoon, some time ago. See http://steepster.com/ChrisSen/posts/255673). This Earl Grey is quite aromatic, with a bergamot scent that’s intense, natural and clear, and which doesn’t give much room for the tea to appear. Things are more balanced on the taste side, where the tea’s flavor tends to appear more to the end of the sip. The resulting taste is well defined and lasting, and leaves a little fizzy/muscatel sensation in the aftertaste. I’d say this tea is less balanced that Basilur’s Earl Grey, but compensates with greater body, character and richness. A good Earl Grey.

Would i buy it again?: Yes, few doubts about it.

drank Darjeeling Tea by Dilmah

How i got it: Bought it (Dilmah’s Variety Pack)

Experience: Third tea of five in the pack. This Darjeeling is very fragrant, with dominant floral notes and some light citric ones. Taste-wise, is equally intense, having a well defined and lasting flavor marked, as in the aroma, by the floral notes which happen to be similar to a chamomille infusion. It’s a bit difficult to describe it without some references… the only one that comes to mind is a Nepal; in that case, this tea would be a stronger but less sweet version of it. Some muscatel at the end of the sip. Best Darjeeling I’ve tried so long, hands down. Very good.

Would i buy it again?: As I’ve said before, the whole pack is worth buying again

drank Supreme Ceylon by Dilmah
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Bought it (Dilmah’s Variety Pack)

Experience: Second tea of five in the pack. This one has a smooth to mild aroma which follows the typical Ceylon style, only that its notes are a bit more complex than those in the standard, as usual in Dilmah. The flavor intensity goes from medium to high, and seems to have less fruit-y and caramel notes, and be more malty than a standard Ceylon. Slightly bitter notes and some astringency at the end of the sip. A Dilmah level tea – easily above the average.

Would i buy it again?: I’d say yes, given that this is the 2nd time I buy the pack, hehe

How i got it: Bought it (Dilmah’s Variety Pack)

Experience: I’ve tried this pack in the past, before opening my Steepster account, so I didn’t have a log for them. Let’s change that, then. This EB has an intense aroma, with caramel and slightly acidic notes, and a softer, less intense taste than your usual Breakfast tea. However, it retains the classic bitter-y notes in the middle of the sip that are typical of these blends. More inclined to an Assam than to a Ceylon in my opinion, it has a good duration, and a relatively complex taste with spiced and acidic hints. Medium astringency. Honestly, I expected a bit more, but this is a enjoyable tea -no doubt about it.

Would i buy it again?: My experience with Dilmah is good overall, so I’d say yes.

How i got it: Bought it for my wife, asked her for a sample bag

Experience: I’ve been a bit absent lately, because it’s winter here in Chile, and I usually don’t try new teas when I sense my taste and smell aren’t in the best conditions, hehe. But i got to try this one. Its aroma is fairly good and natural, has a mild to strong intensity, and is mainly composed by citrus notes, which remind me of the scent Basilur uses in some of their black teas. In the flavor side, things are not that great, however; the lemon scent seems to give the blend an unusual taste, not so natural, and more inclined to the lemon-candy. The duration of the taste is very short, and the green tea doesn’t get to appear in the sip. Overall, a simple tea with few things to highlight. I wouldn’t say bad, but clearly, it’s under the average.

Would i buy it for me?: I don’t think so.

drank Afternoon Tea by Brodie's
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Bought it

Experience: I went with the looks and, honestly, expected less of this tea due to its humble packaging, but ended with a fairly good cup. Mildly intense aroma, mainly composed of Ceylon and a bit of Assam notes too. In one moment, I happen to sense some spiced notes, like the ones from a Chinese tea, but just for a second. Its taste is intense and lasting, simple and lacking great nuances. I could describe its flavor as a balanced mix of Ceylon and Assam, holding some likeness to a Breakfast blend. It reminded me of Basilur’s Oriental Delight, too. Malty and caramel-like notes begin the sip, to later give space to earthy (like a Kenyan tea) and mildly bitter ones, ending with muscatel. A bit of astringency is present too. A better tea than I expected!

Would i buy it again?: Have some possibilities for a change of pace in the evening cup.

How i got it: Tried it and got a bag from my sister-in-law house, beginning this year

Experience: It has a nice and very natural aroma, something that’s not always the case in berries-flavored teas. Maybe I could describe it as a mix between La Teteria’s Berries Silvestres and Basilur’s Winter Tea, in the sense that the main scents seems to be the strawberry and the blueberry ones. In the taste side, the sip begins with a mild acidic touch that introduces a mix of strawberry, raspberry and, as other users noticed too, some apple-like notes of flavor. Simple taste, mainly well-defined and relatively lasting (the aftertaste tends to a flavorless, watery sensation). As I’ve said other times, I’m not really a fan of tart blends, but despite that, this tea managed to be slightly above the average.

Would i buy it?: It wasn’t that bad, but my answer would be ‘no’.

drank Perfect Ceylon by Dilmah
100 tasting notes

How i got it: Bought it

Experience: I saw this one in sale some weeks ago and thought “Why not?”. I’m glad I took it with me. It has a nice, mild to intense classic Ceylon aroma, with some almond/nutty notes that are present in the taste too, but in a more intense way. Very well defined and lasting taste, it seems to be less acidic than your usual Ceylon, and more deep and rich in flavor. It ends with a soft-bitter aftertaste. This tea may be offered in bags format, but I’d say it’s quality has nothing to envy to a loose-leaf’s one. One may think of it as an upgraded Ceylon Supreme. Does justice to its name. Very good.

Would i buy it again?: The price is the less enjoyable part of it, but it may very well be.

Bio

I’m from Chile, so that’s the reason of the weird english you’ll see in my comments from time to time hehehe…

I usually don’t include the details about brewing, but in case you wonder, i use the most common parameters (2g (~0.07oz) tea, 3 mins average, 100-80°C (212-176°F) depending of the type of tea). I also must confess, I’m not a full-blown purist: I like to drink my teas sweetened with sugar.

Black teas are my favorite (pure and scented), but i also enjoy greens from time to time.

Here in Santiago de Chile, i have access to tea by companies like Adagio, Whittard, Zoe!, Lipton, Twinings, Dilmah and Basilur, in addition to national companies like Te Club, La Teteria or Te Supremo, so i’ll be writing mainly about these. In practice, however, i’ll register every new experience with the less known teas i’m finding from time to time, too.

Note: I just write one tealog by tea, so i try to keep them always updated as i drink to get a more accurate description.

90-100: Excepcional tea. I enjoyed every sip of this class of tea and very much recommend it. This cup is unique both in flavor and quality, even to the grade to be almost required in my cupboard.

80-89: Outstanding tea. I enjoyed greatly this tea, and can recommend it. It has impressed me, and it’s very welcome in my cupboard

70-79: Very good tea. Maybe not impressive, but i still liked a great deal this tea. I keep a very good memory from it, and could have it from time to time.

60-69: Over average tea. An overall good cup that has a “something special” about it. Could get it depending on the situation

50-59: Average tea. I enjoy these teas enough to have one on an everyday setting, where the taste is not that important.

40-49: Under average tea. This class still taste like tea, but doesn’t have much merit. Not terrible, but wouldn’t recommend it

30-39: Watery tea. This cup is mostly plain, and lacks the distinctive flavor of tea. Didn’t get to affect me, but i’ll pass from it in the future.

20-29: Bad tea. I sincerely dislike this tea. I’d only finish the cup due to courtesy or respect, if i’m a guest.

10-19: Very bad “tea”. This cup tastes just horrible. Not finishing this even if i’m a guest.

0-10: Undrinkable liquid: Now I’m worried about my health. Wouldn’t have a sip of this ever again.
