Dammann Frères Advent Calendar – Day 22 (from November backlog)

Uh oh, this one lists gingerbread flavor again… Bubblegum, here I come! Although really, the dry sachet smells strongly of cherry, and it has a nice tartness to it which is promising.

Not really getting bubblegum here for some reason… I wonder if it’s gingerbread and orange together that does it? Regardless, I am relieved. This has a strong and sweet cherry flavor, which narrowly avoids tasting like a cough drop. I think it has just enough tartness to remind me more of a dried cherry or at least a cherry sour candy. I also taste the marzipan, and a little warmth from the gingerbread. Apparently this has ginger oil in it, so I’m surprised that there’s not a stronger ginger presence. The base tea has a woody flavor, which I actually enjoy with the added flavors.

Very pleasant, but not something I see myself ordering. I prefer a slightly more tart cherry flavor, and already have a tea from Dammann that fills that need. Plus, I also find myself shying away from marzipan teas these days, having tried plenty of them in my tea “youth”. :P

Flavors: Candy, Cherry, Dried Fruit, Ginger, Marzipan, Spices, Sweet, Wood

Preparation

Which is the tart cherry Dammann?

Cameron B.

The one that I like is “4, 5, 6, Cueillir des Cérises”. It’s sort of red fruits but the cherry is strongest for me.

Vahdam Advent Calendar – Day 22

Ooh, it’s not a masala chai or a turmeric tisane! I don’t love rose, but the ingredients sound very interesting so I’m excited to try this.

The aroma is rose, cardamom, and honey, which bodes well! Hmm, I’m not sure I got enough black tea in my scoop, as the base is rather thin. But the flavors are nice! I like the rose with the cardamom, it mellows out the floral note a bit. I do get quite a bit of honey in the taste as well, perhaps from the saffron? I can taste its sweet earthy presence here. As for the nuts, maybe a little bit of almond? But it’s possible I didn’t shake the tin well enough and all of the nut dust is at the bottom…

It has the potential to be very good, but the thinness of the black tea is distracting to me, and it’s like I can taste the water underneath it all. Perhaps more leaf next time?

Flavors: Almond, Cardamom, Earth, Floral, Honey, Malt, Rose, Saffron, Smooth, Spices, Sweet

Preparation

Martin Bednář

This seems like first one I would try from Vahdam. And it seems quite festive to me.

Roswell Strange

Glad it wasn’t just me who thought it was thin

Mastress Alita

This one sounds good, base tea aside.

Cameron B.

It definitely has potential! I’ll have to see what overleafing does to it.

tea-sipper

This does sound lovely! Maybe we can get Anne to recreate this with a better base…

Happy advent calendar day 22!

DAVIDsTEA has another matcha treat today, this time it’s gummy alligators. So I pulled out a half-finished mini tin of this to sip down instead! Prepared hot and straight, about a teaspoon of matcha for 8 ounces of warm water.

This has a weird powdery texture that I’m not a fan of. I don’t see that I mentioned that in my last note, so maybe it’s due to age? Anyway it’s almost gritty but with very fine granules. The flavor isn’t my favorite orange either, it’s rather similar to orange marmalade with a touch of bitterness. I’m not a marmalade lover.

I added milk to the second half to try to smooth out the texture, and it did help a bit. Now this is reminding me of an Orange Julius without the sugar… XD

Today’s jam is Strawberry-Wild Strawberry Spread. I’m not sure I know the difference, having not eaten wild strawberries… But I do enjoy strawberry jam, so huzzah! This has a lovely sweet strawberry flavor to it, and a hint of tartness. I really love Bonne Maman’s Intense Strawberry (and their Intense line in general), and this isn’t quite as flavorful as that one. But still delicious! Strawberry is also the flavor I had in France, so this is bringing back nice memories as well… :)

(today’s advent teas: https://www.instagram.com/p/CJG5NvpANyn/)

Leaving the matcha rating the same, since I’m not sure whether the weird texture is from age…

Flavors: Bitter, Jam, Orange Zest, Umami

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
Nichole/CuppaGeek

I am so jealous of this jam/jelly advent. It sounds amazing!

Cameron B.

I hope more people will get it next year! :D

ashmanra

I wonder if Homegoods had any jelly advents left? Oh how delightful that would be!

tea-sipper

Where do you buy this jam advent? Also curious why some of them are called “intense”?

Cameron B.

I always buy mine on Amazon, but you have to buy it pretty early before it sells out. It was about $35 I think.

Bonne Maman has a line of “Intense” preserves, they just have more fruit and less sugar in them which is why I like them!

Dustin

I saw them at World Market a couple months ago. They have them for local pickup if a store near you has them in stock.

Kusmi Advent Calendar – Day 21

What a pretty wrapper! It’s a lovely coral color.

It’s actually quite a bit blander than I expected, given that I used a small amount of water. It does have a nice peach candy flavor with a bit of tartness, it reminds me of slightly sour Peachie-Os. I can taste some apple as well, and a bit of apricot. There wasn’t a ton of hibiscus in my sachet, so it’s tart but not sour.

I do like the combination of peach and hibiscus here, so I’m happy to finish the cup.

Mastress Alita

Sour Peachie-O’s sound amazing. I wonder if anyone makes a Peachie-O with like, the sweet’n’sour sugary stuff that is on other candies, like Sourpatch Kids…

Cameron B.

Yummm I would so eat those. My husband and I ordered a bunch of sour gummy candies a couple of months ago and we’re still making our way through them. XD

Mastress Alita

Probably as a surprise to no one, I absolutely love sour/tart gummy candies! (Gummy Worms, Sourpatch Kids…)

Cameron B.

I can’t say I’m shocked by that… ;)

I think Sour Punch Straws might be my favorite? But I also had some Sour Patch Strawberries recently that were amazing.

Mastress Alita

Man, I need to up my candy game and get some of these in my house!

tea-sipper

Yep, I’ve always been a fan of sour candy too, especially Sourpatch Kids. :D

Another holiday tea from my recent order!

This one is fairly good, much better than the Nutcracker black tea. It has a nice cookie flavor to it, and notes of molasses and soft spices. The base is a little woodier than I would like, just like the other blend. It dominates a bit at the beginning of the sip, but then the sweeter desserty notes come out and it’s a lovely cuppa.

I’ll have to experiment more with steeping time for these teas to see how I can minimize the woodiness. I don’t mind woody tea, but it just doesn’t go well with gingerbread cookie!

Flavors: Cinnamon, Clove, Cookie, Ginger, Molasses, Sweet

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML
Courtney

This makes me think of an attempt to make gingerbread cookies over a wood stove.

AJRimmer

This one is on my list for my next order!

Cameron B.

Let me know if you’d like me to send a sample!

AJRimmer

That’s very kind! My cupboards are pretty full at the moment, but I’ll let you know (:

Cameron B.

We can do a swap later down the road, when your cupboard is up to it! XD

Plum Deluxe Advent Calendar – Day 21

My sample had a lot more hibiscus than the photo! Although hibiscus is also first in the list of ingredients, so maybe the photo is just misleading.

It’s definitely very tart! But honestly, tart and orange kind of go together so I’m not mad at it. I do agree with Dustin that it kind of tastes like a more sour cranberry juice. And I happen to like cranberry juice, so that’s fine with me.

Not something I would ever order because it’s just not my thing, but the cup was quite enjoyable this evening.

Adagio Advent Calendar – Day 21

Not terribly excited for this one, just because Adagio’s other holiday teas have been meh…

It’s not bad though. Mostly it’s spicy cinnamon candy flavor with a bit of orange as well. It reminds me of Hot Cinnamon Spice but with less sweetness.

Not a favorite, but pleasant enough and definitely festive.

I instantly put this one in the nope pile. But I do swear that red rooibos is my arch enemy.

Nichole/CuppaGeek

But I’m glad it wasn’t as bad as I imagined it might be, haha.

Cameron B.

I fully expected it to be yet another nutty tea, and was pleased when it wasn’t!

Palais des Thés Advent Calendar – Day 21 (from November backlog)

The Marvelous Tea! Sorry, the name of this just cracks me up… It also claims to be “bursting with flavours and emotions” which is equally hilarious. Dry scent is strong marzipan and nuts with cinnamon.

The flavor is very cinnamon-forward, which is surprising given the wrapper doesn’t mention cinnamon at all. Strong, sweet cinnamon and marzipan are the predominant notes here. I think there’s a hint of apple as well? It’s reminding me very much of amaretti cookies, which isn’t a bad thing. I don’t taste the base at all, in fact if you told me this was a black tea I would probably believe you (aside from the color).

It’s not unpleasant, but I’ve had my fill over the years of marzipan or almond extract-flavored teas. The cinnamon does add a bit of interest, but it’s still too sweet and too marzipan-y for me to consider having in my cupboard. But very festive, I suppose! :)

Flavors: Almond, Apple, Cinnamon, Marzipan, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 4 min, 0 sec 8 OZ / 236 ML
Dustin

I wonder if it’s a French way of describing things or a strange translation to English, but I’ve found a lot of descriptions of French teas to be odd and amusing.

AJRimmer

I love translated tea names! My family and I still talk about a linden tea I bought at an international grocery store years ago called Time of Calmness. I bought it just for the silly name, but it turned out tasty too!

Dammann Frères Advent Calendar – Day 21 (from November backlog)

This one sounds interesting – a green tea with star anise, chestnut, maple, chocolate, clementine, and popcorn? I can’t imagine what this will taste like! The sachet has a very potent anise aroma that gives me pause… Ah well, here we go!

Well… It’s interesting for sure. The star anise is definitely the strongest note here, though it’s possible I got unlucky with my sachet. I do taste a bit of clementine in the middle of the sip, which adds a nice brightness. The end is all maple syrup, which is lovely as I generally find maple teas underwhelming. It tastes very much like real maple syrup as well, which is astonishing.

What a weird combination this is. The star anise is so overpowering, I have to wonder if I just happened to get extra in my sachet. It mostly tastes like black licorice, ha ha. I would be interested to try it again to compare, but I suppose I’ll have to settle for reading others’ advent notes. ;)

Flavors: Anise, Citrus, Licorice, Maple, Maple Syrup, Orange, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 3 min, 0 sec 8 OZ / 236 ML
derk

I opened up my spent sachet – no star anise to be found.

Cameron B.

Clearly they put it all in mine! XD

Vahdam Advent Calendar – Day 21

I have four fruit/herbal tisanes from my advents today, and I’m excited about zero of them… So I figured even though I usually save them for the evening, I’ll get two out of the way early so I have room for some teas I actually like later… XD

(And if anyone is still counting, this is turmeric tea #6 from the Vahdam advent…)

I’ll be honest, I was dreading this one… Some of their other teas have had a bit too much pepper for me, so the name didn’t bode well. But honestly, this isn’t really peppery to me. It’s mostly just turmeric with cardamom and a bit of clove. I get a wee little bit of peppery warmth in the background, but no kick.

So thankfully, this one is fine. Very earthy from the turmeric, of course, but somewhat mild compared to the other turmeric tisanes I’ve tried.

(today’s advent teas: https://www.instagram.com/p/CJELciWgFOJ/)

Flavors: Cardamom, Clove, Earth, Pepper, Smooth, Spices

Preparation
Boiling 5 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML
Dustin

Reading the reviews from their advent, I’m starting to wonder if they do anything other than turmeric and chai!

Mastress Alita

Me too… I enjoy both, but if I were getting an advent from a company like them, it would be to sample a wide variety of Indian teas, and the last of single origin options I’ve seen has been so underwhelming.

tea-sipper

Oh gosh… six turmeric teas. What the heck are they thinking?

Cameron B.

I wish they would’ve done more straight teas… Maybe they did a lot of turmeric because it’s trendy?

tea-sipper

Still trendy? Turmeric is gross. haha

Profile

Bio

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

~ 2024 SIPDOWN CHALLENGE! ~
- January Sipdowns: 6
- Total 2024 Sipdowns: 6

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
