From Whispering Pines Tea Company

Quick Sips: Rich dark chocolaty goodness with vanilla and a hint of a tart cherry note makes this our top selling tea. Blended in 1 and 2oz batches 100% by hand with Madagascar vanilla and Yunnan black tea!

THE INSPIRATION
Golden Orchid — the legendary vanilla black tea that put Whispering Pines on the map!

Pure decadence, this black tea blend is packed full of deep creamy cocoa and sweet vanilla notes! My goal for this tea was to bring the ice cream shop on Mackinac Island into your cup! I began with North Winds – our black tea with dessert notes inspired by the island’s famous fudge and the rustic feel of Up North. The next step was to seek out the highest quality vanilla beans in the world and blend them into the base tea. Blended with a careful hand and the utmost respect for letting all of the flavors shine, this tea exceeds all expectations!

Golden Orchid carries a rich and smooth body with a perfectly balanced flavor profile. Unlike many other vanilla black teas, our base tea shines through the vanilla, creating a mouthwatering synthesis of bold and smooth dessert notes. While the vanilla is noticible by the trained palette, it does more than just add the depth of vanilla notes. Our premium grade A bourbon vanilla beans sourced from the island of Madagascar accentuate the deep fudge and cocoa notes of the base tea as well as add a thick creamy aspect to the blend, reminiscent of masterfully-crafted dark chocolate. The fruity notes of the tea are ever present, too, with light notes of plum and a mouthwatering layer of dark-chocolate covered Michigan cherries! This tea extends far past the last drop, with a powdery cocoa mouthfeel, a touch of sea salt and sweet vanilla lingering on the tongue for hours.

Over time, the tea will absorb the vanilla notes and smooth out. We recommend drinking this tea once or twice a week to taste the way it transforms over time. Also note that mixing up the tea prior to scooping out your desired amount of leaf is recommended due to the tendency of the vanilla beans to sink to the bottom of the bag. Enjoy!

Please note: Each harvest season produces a slightly different flavor profile of the base teas, and I spend a lot of time balancing out the flavor profile of North Winds to best suit Golden Orchid. Golden Orchid will have slight variations between harvests, but will always stay true to the inspiration!

Ingredients: Black Tea & hand-cut Madagascar vanilla beans

How to brew the perfect cup:
Steep 1/2 tablespoon of leaves
in 8 ounces of boiling water
for 3 minutes.

2nd infusion: 5 minutes
3rd infusion: 8 minutes

(From the Unflavored Traveling Tea Box)

This tea is outstanding. I knew it would be given that North Winds is the base, but I’m still impressed with the layers of flavor here. The sip starts out mildly fruity and then morphs into dark chocolate and sweet vanilla with a bit of a crusty bread note. Every now and then there is a hint of cocoa. It’s not bitter but a deeper chocolate note than the dark chocolate. It’s so good, and even though there are all of these heavy flavors the body of the tea manages to stay light which I find charming. As the tea cools I get another hint of the fruity, cherry like note. Love, love, love it.

I wish I’d gotten some of this now. I really enjoyed North Winds when I tried it. Maybe there will be some left when it gets to me. Or I’ll just buy some for myself when I allow myself to buy tea.

Wow, did this tea get better? I’ve had it once or twice since my order came in a couple of weeks ago, and somehow it seemed…lacking. Maybe it was because I wasn’t in the right mood, maybe it was because I had different expectations. (It does seem different from the old version but it’s not just the vanilla bean.)

Oh! I just realized, the last few times I brewed I forgot about drinking it until it was lukewarm. It could be an issue of temperature…I’ll take note of that. It’s much better when it’s still hot.

The dry and wet leaves smell absolutely decadent, like cocoa and sweet sparkling vanilla. The tea liquor has an aroma of chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and cherries. Mouth-watering delicious. The taste is very similar, too! It tastes like dark chocolate! Thick, rich, wonderful dark chocolate. I for one think that the darker the chocolate, the better, so this is heaven. It’s so smooth too. Mmmmm. The vanilla bean adds an element of sweetness and smooths out the tea base. Makes it velvety soft, creamy. It’s like a liquid chocolate dessert. I’m noticing fruitiness but it’s not quite cherry. I was thinking plum, then I second-guessed myself and read the tasting note. I guess it is plum! Neat. It’s not very strong, it’s just a subtle hint beneath the chocolate and vanilla. After sipping there’s a slight nutty aftertaste and caramel sweetness. The notes of cocoa carry through. Oh my, my, my. This is so good and I can’t get over how SMOOTH and RICH and VELVETY it is! It’s a keeper. I was unsure, but I’m convinced now. AND it’s good for resteeping. I am so on board.

Upped my rating.

TheTeaFairy

Great review!! And you will never want to be without this tea again. I think the vanilla bean makes this tea even better with time, that’s why you might see a difference. I know MzPriss (who’s GO is the absolute favourite) prefers it when it’s older :-)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

I love lightly aged GO. A month even makes a HUGE difference :)

Dexter

Then mine should be AMAZING by the time I get to it ;)

kimquat

That might be! I believe it. It seems much smoother and sweeter today than before. After this, I’m trying North Winds again to compare. (:

TheTeaFairy

Haha! please dex, don’t wait 6 months before trying this one!!!

Dexter

I’m working on getting better at that… ;))

MzPriss

Yes kimquat – it DOES get better as it sits a little while. The vanilla infuses more and it gets smoother and smoother so it is even more excellent in my mouth.

I got my Whispering Pines order in this weekend! Woot Woot! I wasn’t in the greatest of tea moods last night, BUT I was craving chocolate so I had a cup of this.

When I received the sample of this from MzPriss awhile back i didn’t realize at first that it was a flavored tea so I brewed it in a gongFu. Gongfu and this tea weren’t the best mix at least for me. This was much better brewed normally. This was my dessert last night. Chocolate, vanilla and creamy yum. 3 steeps out of this bad boy. Thanks for inventing such an wonderful tea!

MzPriss

Isn’t it awesome??? I’m finishing up a cup right noe

TheTeaFairy

Oh, we’re all in a GO mood this morning? So good!!

TeaTiff

It is good! This was my dessert tea last night. Enjoying a cup of golden monkey this morning, I would say equally as good:)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Not flavored, blended ;)

TeaTiff

Thank you for the correction!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Hehe, no worries :) I was asked “How do you dry the artificial vanilla flavoring?” in an email a few days ago…so anything like that pops out at me now. Lol

Sipdown (insert melodramatic tune here). Every time I drink this, it reminds me of good chocolate milk: sweet, creamy, with rich chocolate and a bit of malt. So long Golden Orchid. We will see each other soon, I swear.

MzPriss

That would make me cry like a baby

Terri HarpLady

I packaged some of this up for Sil today…I’m already getting low on it

MzPriss

I can share. Has Sil had it yet?

Terri HarpLady

Nope, but I’m sending her some, along with the tea we ordered from YS, & half of all my recent samples :)

MzPriss

Squeeeee! That’s awesome.

Golden Orchid, I wrote a haiku for you:

Rich silky liquid
Flavours blossom in my cup
Indulge. Joyful mouth!

It’s really that good. Cocoa and vanilla, what a taste.
I loved the base tea as well (North Winds), but the vanilla is the secret. Vanilla makes everything taste better, literally, everything.

First two steeps were very rich and dark, third a bit weaker but still worth it.

I’d tried this yesterday in the middle of painting but didn’t have time to sit and properly enjoy it and take it all in, so I had it first thing this morning again, so worth it.
I also used bottled water, what a difference….

Definitely a restock!

After reading this I am SO pumped to get my order! Well I already was. But now I’m on a whole other level.

You are a poet #_#

Dangit, man. I just get my first Butiki order after months of people raving about them and now everyone’s raving about WP and I’m so desperate to try them now. I CAN’T WIN.

Added to wish list.

Terri HarpLady

I still haven’t tried anything from WP. I guess I’ll have to get with the program. :)

ohfancythat

Memily Steepster is a dangerous place!

Yeah you guys all need to try some WP. I see another order in my future for sure. I love reading everyone’s reviews!

Terri how is it possible that I’ve tried a tea you haven’t?!

TheTeaFairy

Haha! It well deserves its own inspirational haiku!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Can I quote your awesome haiku on my facebook page? You’ll get credit, of course :)

ohfancythat

Yeah, go for it!! :)

Terri HarpLady

whatshesaid, I have no idea! LOL

SarsyPie

Aaaahh… I see we have finally received our WP order! I love this review. :)

“Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there’s nothing, really nothing to turn off” Visions of Johanna, Bob Dylan

I appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm for this tea. For me the joy of this tea is in its understatement. It is not a bombardment on the taste buds, but so well balanced; a tea that has been built, not blended. Each of the pieces critical, there, but not there. A handful of rain, if you will, tempting you to defy it.

David Webb

Tasting it with the sample of the Yunnan Dian Hong was a lot of fun! Thank you!

No worries, David! Glad you’re enjoying them!

I have a big problem with this tea. It just keeps resteeping and giving me more cups. Well actually I guess that’s not a problem. But I’m sort of ready to do something else!

In other news, textbooks are expensive. Crazy expensive.

In other other news, my husband figured out that I love another. I suppose it was obvious, the evidence is all over me. And I keep meeting him in the bedroom for some heavy petting. The way he gazes into my eyes makes me so happy, and I have only known him for two months. Hearing him snoring next to me is the happiest sound ever. All I have to do is make a little tongue clicking sound and he comes running, just like a dog. And if I stop paying attention to him, he headbutts me to remind me that he is there.

Ost

Awwhhh adorable! He’s so cute! ^^ I love how so many people on here have dogs and cats. Least I’ve seen from their Instagrams. It’s awesome! People who own pets make me really happy! (:

Marzipan

I was really, really resistant to getting another pet, but I can’t begin to tell you how great this cat is. He has all of his claws, but is super conscious about never using them on us. Even sometimes when he gets frisky and wants to play it’s like he is consciously gentle. Zero hairballs. Zero accidents. He doesn’t even get underfoot and trip us. He comes like a dog when you call him, and even leaves the room when you tell him to (like when we go to bed at night). My heart hurts to think what might have happened if he hadn’t been adopted.

mj

He is a beautiful cat! And yes, textbooks are crazy expensive!! Campus bookstore bad. Half.com good

Marzipan

Oh I’m looking all over. But the Chem ones don’t seem to be available anywhere but the bookstore, unfortunately.

TeaBrat

What a cute kitty! :)

mj

Good luck! I hope you can find a deal :)

cookies

Did you try ABE for textbooks? It was the only place I could find a couple of mine. Also Amazon rents some textbooks which is absolutely wonderful.

Marzipan

Yeah, I’m actually pretty savvy at the online book thing (I own an online bookstore).

Tealizzy

He’s so cute! I feel that way about our male cat. He’s a love bug. :)

yyz

Super cute! Textbooks are definitely expensive. I was very happy when one of my physics profs ordered only the section of the book that applied yo the course vs the whole text and saved us about $65.00.

Marzipan

My daughters chemistry materials are gong to be around $500 for one class.

yyz

That is insane! What are they making you buy beyond the text and goggles?

boychik

That is crazy!

Marzipan

I left it downstairs, it looks like 4 different books.

yyz

Wow, I guess I could see it happening if their is a Lab book, the text and maybe an additional workbook. But, I have a Bio degree and have taken Engineering courses and I think the most I have spent on books and materials is $200.00 on a single course. Hope you can find some of the other books used.

Stephanie

School text books are such a rip off! ugh!!! Love your kitteh ;)

Leah Naomi

Science textbooks are the worst for prices – I remember it very very well. I truly believe they artificially inflate the price just to make the whole college experience even more impossible. And the reality is, no way she will get 500 bucks use out of them, but they are necessary enough that you can’t just do without.

Marzipan

Her bio textbook I found for $65 :)

Cheri

I think this tea is next on my WP list. It sounds just dreamy.

Good luck on the book buying. Ugh.

and ooh me gorsh KITTEH!!! Such a cutie! I love how happy you are with him, and that he seems just as happy with you. I love the paw thingy. One of ours does that as well and it’s just sooooo cute!!! (Of course, if she’s so happy she’s doing the paw thing, she’s also droooooooooling all over the place.)

Okay, okay, I get it now. This tea is pretty fantastic! It lives up to the hype!

It had a little side-trip on its way here, though. I thought it was going to arrive on Monday with the 52teas I ordered…would have been the perfect mail day. Instead, USPS failed, and sent my package 90 miles north of me, and then sent it back. Good job, USPS. Oh, and in the 100-degree heat. Poor tea! But it’s here now, so I’m happy.

Real vanilla and cocoa notes makes this one of the few teas I could drink instead of hot chocolate. It reminds me a lot of Tealux’s chocolate delight; however it is much more amazing, since the only flavoring here is vanilla beans. Delicious milk chocolate in a cup. Yum!!!

Now, if only I had ordered North Winds, I could have tried the base tea….!!!

this is NOT going in my cupboard…bad Cavocorax! who sent this to me, forcing me to drink this right away so as not to increase my cupboard.

I was curious about this one because it’s pretty popular right now and seems to be getting good reviews on the whole. I haven’t yet ordered from WP yet – well beyond my really small joint order with Cavo.

This tea is pretty tasty. I dunno if it’s rock your socks off sort of tea for me, but i’d pick it up again and rotate it in through my cupboard. It’s a chocolatey, malty, vanilla like tea…though there’s a note in there that makes me think of oolongs that made me less enthusiastic about the blend. I think it might? be the vanilla, though i can’t say for certain. On the whole though, a really nice cup of tea that started this insane day for me and set me on the right foot. Thanks Cavocorax!

TeaLady441

Well, if it’s your first order, I think you can get 15% off… Y’know, for when you’re ready.

I received my order today. i was so excited to try this tea. its the most popular fr Whispering Pines and i was curious to try. prepared according to the WP instructions. this blend is unbelievable, i didnt imagine how amazing could that be . its chocolaty smooth, bready, vanilla, in other words, perfection in a cup. Nothing artificial. its notes remind me Verdant’s Laoshan Black on steroids. bold and smooth. i made 3 steeps. 2nd and 3rd were pretty good, maybe a little less vanilla, but still were close to the original. I’d say more bread came out. I kept sniffing my empty cup, it smelled like handmade fudge.
i’m very happy that i ordered from Whispering Pines. i placed an order last Friday, got on Monday. And i really love to get handwritten notes. Thank you Brenden

Is it similar to brioche?

Nope. i think its similar to Laoshan Black. Bread notes not like pastry, but more like rye bread. but again, its how i taste it.
