Exquisitely Buddy Black Tea
The Cheng Family’s Reserve harvest is made almost entirely from tiny golden buds even smaller than Wuyishan’s prized Jin Jun Mei buds. Notes of candied rose, brown sugar, and orange confit.
Qimen is famous specifically for it’s tiny buddy black teas like this one. It takes an incredible amount of labor to pick enough buds for even one pound of Reserve Qimen, but the results are so exquisite that Master Cheng shares it as his pride and joy every year. The buddy quality gives this tea a very thick feeling on the palate and potent, powerful flavor and aroma.

I made the final half of this tea as an iced tea. With the recent weather changes, from cold to warmer, I went through an iced tea craze, which is particularly nice to have on hand during in-office days.
Aroma: Cocoa, dark chocolate, floral, & malt.
Tasting Notes: Slight notes of dark chocolate, floral (rose?), & a maltiness in the forefront of the palate.
2022 harvest
Rich with malt, savory. Floral with rose which is especially prominent in the aroma. Orchid, fresh forest aromas and wood become more prominent as the tea cools. Lingering tangy malt aftertaste. Uniform tiny rolled leaves very quickly brew a clear dark brown. Strong returning sweetness emanates from palate and tonsils. Cool to lukewarm feeling in the body.
This is one of the best qimen hong cha I’ve had over the years. A very nice tea though it’s never been quite what I wanted to drink in the moment.
