From TeaLife Hong Kong

This is the superior version of the very popular Changtai Tianxia Tong An cake, which was originally produced for a Hong Kong tea company! Made with wild Menghai-area material and stone pressed in the traditional manner, these cakes are excellent value, given the quality of material and the way they’ve aged!

This 400g version is made with superior material from the same area. This batch has been stored in more humid conditions in Guangdong than my 357g cakes (the standard version), which is what I’d hoped for, as the more humid storage took the edge off the material a little more completely.

I identified a note that bordered on citrus/bergamot when first trying this tea, which was a pleasant surprise. I couldn’t quite put my finger on the citrus note, but I did consider calamondin and key lime as possibilities.

While the two teas are similar, the flavors were easier to discern in the premium edition, and it was easy to tell the material was a step above. That being said, I think I may actually prefer the fuller and more robust flavor profile of the 357g version. You don’t have to pick one or the other at TeaLife Hong Kong, however: try both! This cake is priced the same as the other version (and you get almost 50g more), so it’s definitely worth comparing the two if you enjoy the regular Tianxian Tong’An!

This is a really good aged sheng at a reasonable price point. I finished up 100g before ordering a whole cake, note that the cake is 400g as opposed to the more traditional 357g. Brewing in a large nixing pot from the same vendor really brings out the citrusy notes, and I get a lot of finished tea from 8g.
