Castleton is perhaps the second best-known tea estate after Margaret’s Hope. Both carry the tell-tale muscatel taste and aroma that the Darjeeling region is famous for, but Castleton highlights how much terroir affects teas even within the same region.
Both Castleton and Margaret’s Hope are owned by the same company, but come from very different historic routes. While exact ages of tea estates is a grey zone, Castleton is believed to have been producing since 1885. Castleton is grown on the side of a mountain and reaches the upper heights, growing at 7,500 ft, higher than Margaret’s Hope. While not one of the largest estates, we believe Castleton accurately represents many of the qualities desired from a second flush Darjeeling. With delicious muscatel tones, and a nice amber color, Castleton Darjeeling offers a delicious example of Darjeeling teas.

Thunderbolt TeaThis is a fine example of a second flush Darjeeling. Muscatel, lovely, light but not too light. It has the characteristic dryness as well. If you aren’t a Darjeeling fan, this will not be for you. :) If, however, you like 2nd flushes, this is a great one to pick up.
And the customer service at SOT is just impeccable. Shipping is ultra fast and the only thing I regret about this latest order is that I didn’t grab more of the Mokalbari Assam like I had intended!

I may have slightly oversteeped this one as I got a hint of bitterness, but I really enjoyed this cup.
I kept the sample because I have a goal to experiment more with straight teas like Keemuns and Darjeelings.
I liked the flavours in this one, though I can’t pinpoint them. I have no idea what muscatel is or what it’s supposed to taste like, but people throw that word around a lot for Darjeelings.
I have some left so next time I will decrease the steep time to avoid the bitterness I got the first round.
