Butternut Pie Matcha

This is on my top 20 list which is saying a lot considering all the amazing flavors at Red Leaf Tea!

It has that nutty buttery flavor I love. I have never had butternut pie but I would sure love some after having this!

I made mine in a latte iced and it was so delicious and really helped that sweet tooth that has been bugging me this whole past week.

There is a creaminess and a rich sweetness to the tea but the butteriness of the matcha is a perfect match for the nutty and buttery goodness of this flavor.

I got mine in robust flavoring with the basic matcha grade.

I do love RLT’s higher grade of matcha so much but honestly in the flavored matcha I am quite fine with the basic grade as it is excellent as well.

Some of my other favorite matcha flavors include Boysenberry, Butterscotch, and Macadamia Nut. Now if only they could make a BACON flavored matcha!!

It’s sweet but not too sweet! It’s butternutty! LOL – Seriously, tho…it has buttery, nutty, butternut squash, fluff, sweet-sugary, matcha notes all happening! Impressive! It’s more like I am eating a meal than drinking a tea/matcha!

This Matcha makes a great latte. I like it better as a latte than prepared traditionally, somehow the creaminess of the milk enhances and elevates the flavors to give it more of a pie-like taste.

I can’t say that I’ve ever had a butternut pie. But I figured that butternut pie had to taste a lot like pumpkin pie, right? And it does … but I taste more of a butternut squash flavor … there’s less of the spice that goes along with pumpkin pie, and that’s where the real difference lies, I think.

There’s a nutty flavor to this, as well as a pastry-like flavor that is slightly buttery. I think that the natural buttery taste of the matcha plays well with the pastry notes. I can also taste the sweet, vegetative tones of the matcha.

A sample from Roswell Strange! One thing I wondered as I was preparing this one – butternut as in butternut squash? Or butter and nuts? Based on the initial sip, I’m thinking the former, probably. It has a sweet-savoury vibe going on, and it reminds me a bit of pumpkin pie, although without the spices. It also tastes pretty buttery, though, so who knows? Clearly not me. I prepared this one as a latte, using 1/4 tsp and then an extra bit for luck. I like that it’s one of the more savoury matchas I’ve come across, because it makes a refreshing change. I don’t always want sweet or desserty tea, and it’s nice to have the option. Pistachio is another one that ticks that box for me.

I’m going to assume that the flavour here is butternut squash. I have the delicate level of flavouring, so it’s fairly subtle, but that’s what it’s reminding me of most. There’s a hint of pastry/pie crust, which probably accounts for the butteriness I’m tasting. Together, they’re a good combination, and I’d happily drink this one again. I’m not sure that any pie flavoured thing, particularly when it comes to matcha, will ever beat Rich Berry Pie in my estimation, but this is a decent contender.

So today for breakfast/lunch I made a Tomato Alfredo recipe that I’ve done like a billion times. I wanted to switch things up a little bit though, so I pulled out all my matcha and looked for something I could easily mix into the sauce.

I picked this ‘cause it’s probably the most savory/umami match I’ve currently got other than pistachio or just plain, unflavoured matcha. I have to say, it turned the normally quite beautiful pasta sauce into this very gross poop brown colour. Very not appealing…

The flavour was nice though; still a very strong, creamy tomato note like is normally present with this particular sauce. I mean, it’s essentially a rose sauce. The matcha was definitely noticeable though: this is a creamy sauce but it doesn’t usually taste buttery, per say. This time I definitely got that creamy, buttery note from the matcha. It also kinda of softened some of the ‘tang’ from the tomato. So, it was vegetal and rich and creamy with a buttery finish but not as “sharp” as it normally is. Richness without brightness, if that makes sense? It was better tasting than it sounds.

My friend and I did a 5+2 order and decided to split 3 matchas we both wanted to try, but weren’t sure we wanted 30g of a piece. This one one of them.

I made this one as my usual matcha milk. I threw it in the fridge to ‘steep’ yesterday afternoon and just thought to try it now. I had no idea what to expect here, since I’d never even heard of a butternut pie, much less tasted one. I was pleasantly surprised with the initial sips though. There is a definite buttery-ness, though not quite the same as French Butter Cookie, and a subtle nuttiness too. There is also a sweetness that is akin to squash with just a touch of brown sugar on top.

Definitely a great choice. I could see ordering this one myself in the future.
