Chocolate Orange Biscuit Cake

Another one from Tiffany :) – thanks so much! This one reminds me almost of Butiki’s Three Friends but without that distinct unique base that Butiki had and heavy on the orange – I guess it also reminds me of Angry Tea Room’s Creamsicle blend if chocolate and a bit of black tea was added. So this is channeling some of my favorite teas! It’s a bright orange with only a hint of chocolate, until the dregs of the cup. Very tasty but I would love a bit more black tea and slightly less rooibos. The perfect amount of sweetness, but I’d really love some of that “biscuit” flavor that is mentioned in the name. I’m glad I have some of this in the cupboard – it will make sipping down Three Friends a bit less terrible. Also drank this with a couple Dove dark chocolates.

Both the dry and steeped tea smell really good – fresh sweet orange and creamy milk chocolate with an underlying nutty baked kind of quality. The taste tripped me up a bit. Not because it was unpleasant, but because it was very familiar/nostalgic and I couldn’t place what specific tea it was making me think of. Really nice balance between rich chocolate and sweet orange though; neither really stronger than the other. I loved the use of rooibos here – the sweet nutty and honeyed graham notes really sold me on the biscuit/cookie element of the blend! Only downside for me was the very oily mouthfeel, but that’s just kind of to be expected when you have a blend with milk chocolate in it.

Friday 5/28 — Dessert by Deb Chocolate Orange Biscuit Cake 100g bag. This is from Deb’s OG collection that’s how far behind I am, I have teas from her entire company’s existence to go through. The problem for me is what I mentioned recently on my B&B Maple Bacon Pancake note, I am not good with a blend of black/rooibos. Also, for me I love the orange, but the chocolate does not come through in the way I’d like.. maybe I’m just not a chocolate tea fan? Not sure. To get the same orange I’d just drink Deb’s Orange Ginger Shortbread tea (even though I don’t like rooibos) since I think the orange/ginger is nice in that one.

This smells wonderful, just like Deb’s other orange blends. I tried to get each of the ingredients when I steeped this (dark chocolate, orange, rooibos base etc.)

This produces an oily sheen, which is to be expected since this contains chocolate, but it is not an unpleasant mouthfeel.

This mostly tastes like red rooibos tea with a hint of orange. I wish the chocolate note was stronger.

I do not think I will repurchase this.

2021 sipdown no. 21

This one is super tasty, but we both only got orange. No chocolate, no biscuit, sadly. I do enjoy an orange rooibos though, so that’s okay. I did think it was a bit odd, considering the sizable chocolate chunks, but alas!

This one tastes a little bit like Fauchon’s L’Automne with that real orange in there.

So I chose this as my free 75g bag of chocolate tea during one of Deb’s weekly specials. I ended up opening it for a swap, and it smelled so good that I’ve been wanting to have some for a few days now. Well, tonight was the night!

This was a bit difficult to scoop out, as it’s a mix of many things and the orange pieces are quite large. Hopefully I got a good amount of the chocolate, cacao, and maple flakes. This is a blend of rooibos and black tea, but looked like mostly rooibos so that’s how I steeped it.

It smells like a delicious creamsicle… The taste isn’t quite as good as the smell, but still yummy. I love the orange flavor from the slices because it tastes so authentic, and it has a good balance of sweet and acidic. The chocolate is a bit more subdued than I would like, but who knows if I got a decent amount in my basket. There is something a bit cakey here, and I wonder if it’s the combination of the rooibos with the maple?

I quite like it! I’m always impressed by how much flavor Deb manages to get into these teas without adding flavoring. The orange here is particularly surprising to me, I wouldn’t think those orange pieces would contribute so much! This tea makes me think of a trifle with cake, cream, and orange, and a sprinkling of chocolate shards on top.

(P.S. – I looked up chocolate biscuit cake and OMG, it’s going on my list to make!)

Having my second steeping of this. I drank the first one faster than expected while working, but enjoyed the flavors when I’d stop to think about it. The orange is the most present flavor in the cup. The chocolate hides behind a little rounding out the orange. I didn’t see many tea leaves in this mix, it was mostly rooibos, but I’m not getting that awful rooibos woody dry mouth finish. I don’t know that I’m getting much caffeine either, something I’ll have to remedy with my next selection. Not sure about the biscuit cake part of it as it’s mostly a tasty orange chocolate.

This one smells amaaaaaazing! Sadly the taste doesn’t quite translate as intensely as I want it to, but it’s still a good tea. I think as far as chocolate orange goes, now that butiki is gone I’m going to have to go with necessiteas version except it’s never in stock! So this might be a decent replacement for when I really want that orange chocolate flavour. I’m ok with the room so in this, though why it can’t just be a black tea, I don’t know lol. Need to try this with a little sugar to see how that changes things.

I’ve been into chocolate orange for a while. My goal has been to replace Butiki’s amazing chocolate orange tea and this is not the replacement. It’s good but it’s a bit too rooibos-forward for my tastes. Rooibos and orange with some chocolate.
