Sipped this tea down today! I probably overleafed it a bit, but it was a nice cup. I’m kind of surprised it didn’t have custard in the name because custard flavors were the first thing I noticed. The coconut was more subtle and the lemon part just melted into the custard flavors and didn’t stand out on it’s own for me. I was also wolfing down a bowl of ramen at the same time as drinking this cup, caught off guard my my hunger, so I didn’t get to focus on my tea as much as I often do. I might give a second steeping a go later this evening.

Skimmed my past tasting notes and looks like I’ve had some mixed experiences with this tea; to be honest neither of the tea previous times I’ve had this have stuck in my memory and I couldn’t really remember much about it when I steeped it up earlier this week…

Based on the name I probably would have expected something rather sweet and creamy, with more of a custardy style of lemon filling – like the merger of a coconut cream pie and a lemon meringue. I forgot I was steeping this and thus it was very over steeped, so the resulting tea wasn’t at all like that mental image and it’s hard to say if it would have been had I been more attentive. What it was was very heavy and robust with a lot of black tea body and tannic but with the almost caramelized sugar-like note of toasted coconut. No lemon at all, but the weighty and thick black with that unrefined toasted coconut was actually pretty nice.

Sipdown (289)

This was my sister’s random number selection pick tonight. I also didn’t realize it would be a sipdown but when I opened the package, I realized there was basically enough for a 16 oz serving so I just finished it.

Now that I am drinking the last of this, I am wondering how sugar or something would have helped this. It’s a nice warming coconut flavor and I could even see coconut pie but the lemon isn’t strongly present. It’s a good dessert flavor but seems to be missing just one thing. This will sound weird but the flavors you do get are almost bottom heavy so it seems like you need a pop of something on top. I think it is a bright lemon or even a sweet lemon note (like the lemon flavor in Butiki’s Lemon French Macaron) that would make this really rounded out.

Inkling

I’ve never had a coconut lemon tea! That seems like it could be a really great combination if done well.
