Thanks, Sil, for sharing this one with me, especially given my fondness for vanilla teas. I like this one a lot—possibly the scent rising from the steaming cup even more so than the flavour coming through in the sips. The scent really is intoxicating. Yum. The flavour seems to round out more nicely as the tea cools a bit. Nice one. I wonder how it compares to my favourite vanilla black.

This one just isn’t for me, after trying it twice. I don’t like the vanilla flavor here and it just isn’t good with the base… Ceylon again. Or something that tastes like Ceylon. Tasting notes lead me to believe other batches of this tea were better. Onto the sale list it goes. My tasting note is as blah meh as this tea is to me.

Sipdown (247)

This tea is from 2016 and it is supposed to be best before October 2019 but this is not its best. This is mostly the base tea which I don’t love. All the delicious vanilla is gone. This is goodbye and it seems like I put this off too long.

tea-sipper

oh good, a tea that is bad before the best by date. :/

Cameron B.

Aww… I feel you, my Noël à Venise from the end of 2016 has also lost most of its flavor. I really should just sip it down… :(

Kittenna

That’s really sad. I feel lucky that the majority of old teas I’ve tried are still flavourful, although perhaps just not as potent as they previously were. And we’re talking 6-year old teas, here. Haha.

GCTTB
Yay more French teas (seriously, where did you guys find them all?). This one has a rich, sweet bourbon vanilla scent and flavour. It’s quite strong, though since I love vanilla (I bake with it all the time) that’s hardly a problem. The description mentioned biscuity notes and I can definitely pick those up too, there’s a distinct baked goods flavour to this blend that makes me think of cookies fresh out of the oven. I’m just drinking this plain but I bet it would be awesome with milk – though to be honest the black tea base and the flavours are so smooth that it doesn’t_need_it like some blends do.

I think the bulk of the French teas came from Sil if I’m not mistaken.

Sil

Fancy French teas came from my trip to Paris. I crammed as many as I could in to the box since they’re hard to come by and part of the reason I’d picked up so many was to share. I put the offer out there that if anyone falls in love with something, it’s highly likely I can send more.

Jillian

Cool, thanks. :)

Oh man I’m jealous! I hope to partake in the next GCTTB, though!

This one has a very strong vanilla smell. There is something sweet about the vanilla. The taste is quite strong vanilla. It is not bad though. Just a bold vanilla flavour. I feel like there is some fruity type sweetness to the vanilla. It makes me thinks cherry. The black tea base is moderately bold and slightly malty. There is definitely a light floral flavour to the tea. The tea is very milky in flavour as well. As it cools the vanilla mellows and there is definitely a strong tea biscuit type flavour.

I liked this tea best when it had cooled enough that it was still quite warm, but no longer hot, and not yet luke-warm. Hope that makes sense :)

I am really enjoying these French teas, it seems like their bases have a slight floral note about them….or is that just my bias?? lol

This vanilla is fairly strong, it doesn’t taste completely natural but I don’t mind that boozy vanilla flavour either. I really enjoyed this one and I think it would be super good with a splash of milk to round out that vanilla.

One last sip down courtesy of my mom. I gave her the remaining few cups to take with her to the house in the middle of nowhere, where she hardcore milked it (that is, double—sometimes even triple—steeped it) and she reported to me today that it has officially bitten the dust. We both prefer Bourbon, so while this is a decent vanilla black, Bourbon will be the one on our reorder list, ultimately.

Oh, and finally under 50 again!

I think with the addition of some cream, this would be a great dessert tea. As it is, without any additions, it’s a really strong vanilla tea. The tea isn’t lost but certainly isn’t the forefront in taste next to the vanilla. It does seem more like a Ceylon than a China black, though the site says it’s a mix – it’s softer than a China black, if that makes any sense. This is a solid vanilla tea. Obviously it uses flavoring but not in a nasty way. So happy to have had this and to have enough to try it again with cream! Thanks, Sil!

Sil

i tend to brew these a little cooler and a little longer than my usual 3 mins, boiling

Nicole

I’ll try that. I did this at just off boiling for about 3 minutes. I’ll go cooler and longer next time!

Hmmm this is a nice vanilla black, and I haven’t had a tea from DF yet that I don’t like, but it doesn’t stand out as memorable. Other DF flavors, especially those with red fruits and Bourbon (wow so good!), have spoiled me and set a very high bar for DF. I have noticed that I don’t tend to appreciate straight vanilla teas as much but vanilla bean is my favorite ice cream, so I am always surprised.

Marzipan

My husband loves this one, he says it tastes like a vanilla cookie to him.

I really wanted to love this one! :(

i had this one ages ago – it’s been a busy day getting ready for the week – spent the day making soup (spicy tomato lentil) and then mock lasagne casserole. More south beath friendly recipes that are stupidly good tasting. Pulled this one out for a bit of a break from newer teas. need to get around to drinking up my old ones since there are a few of them, but in large quantities. Silly frenchies need to consider 50g as a standard heh.

Fjellrev

That soup sounds delicious. Smart move making interesting recipes so you won’t get bored on the diet.

And I agree, they seriously need to start selling 50g quantities.

Sil

the lasagne casserole was awesome too – spaghetti squash for “pasta” noms.

Fjellrev

I LOVE spaghetti squash in place of pasta. Must have been awesome indeed.

Fjellrev

Now that’s ambition. Am I weird that I like cottage cheese alone or on baked potatoes but in lasagna (same goes for ricotta), I find it disgusting? The turkey sausage sounds interesting.

Sil

i subbed the cottage cheese for ricotta. i don’t love cottage chese in lasagne either haha. Doing it again, i’d just use regular ground turkey and season the meat….taking apart sausages made me not want to eat them ever again even though i KNOW what goes in to them

Fjellrev

That must have been annoying having to take them apart. The ground turkey would be a lot healthier too.
