From 52teas

Tea of the Week for February 22, 2021!

The inspiration for this one comes from way back when we first took over 52Teas – one of our backers for the start-up Kickstarter campaign selected the “create a blend” reward. She couldn’t decide between two tea ideas – a Banoffee tea & another blend idea. Ultimately, she decided on the other blend idea, but I kept the idea of a banoffee tea rattling around in my head – because BANANA!

Over the nearly 6 years since we’ve been doing this thing – we’ve crafted quite a few banana teas (some of them have been reblended on multiple occasions) – but I’m always excited for another banana tea. Banana is one of my very favorite tea flavors. This one is quite different from the others – because of the base we’ve selected for it.

This blend starts with a Scottish Breakfast blend – which is a blend of finely cut CTC black teas – which means it’s SUPER rich, bold & malty! (Because of this, it’s very important to pay attention to your steep time! This one can go from perfectly steeped to oversteeped & bitter in a matter of seconds!) This is the same blend I used for the Wake Me Up, Scotty! Blend.

The breakfast blend is then flavored with vanilla & toffee essence before it’s blended with a bunch of organic, freeze-dried bananas! Have your dessert for breakfast! This blend is VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free!

PLEASE NOTE – Due to an operator error, this tea has been labeled “Banana Breakfast Blend” rather than Banoffee Breakfast Blend – the labels were misprinted.

organic ingredients: black teas, bananas, vanilla beans, calendula petals & natural flavors

This is a pretty brisk breakfast blend. I steeped it for 2 minutes 10 seconds, and I wouldn’t want to go any longer. The banana flavor is lovely, as always, and the tea backing it up packs a punch. I had it with milk and lots of sugar, and I topped it with whipped cream, which really made this a lovely, luxurious mug of warm tea. Subsequent cups of this weren’t as strongly flavored for some reason, but they were still nice. I liked doing a resteep and adding oat milk, which seemed to bring out the banana elements some more. Nothing about this blend really says banoffee over plain banana though.

Drank this the other day – I don’t mind it, but I think I prefer other banana blacks from 52teas. However, it’s a decent base and the flavouring isn’t intense, but is present – mostly just a light, realistic banana.

There are so many 52Teas banana blends that I love, so I was excited to see this in the monthly subscription box. It’s just not a favorite, particularly when compared to the other banana blends. I didn’t get any bitterness, but the black base did overpower any vanilla or toffee notes. The banana was still very present, but lacked depth.

Sipdown! (38 | 168)

I have to say, this is not my favorite banana black tea from 52teas.

It’s because of the base. This is a Scottish breakfast base apparently, and I’m not a big breakfast blend person in general, but this one in particular is just very brisk without much else going on. A bit of malt, I suppose, but otherwise just tannic without a lot of character. I ended up drinking it with a splash of milk (which is very unusual for me) to smooth it out a little.

It does have a lovely banana flavor, as usual, but I’m not getting the toffee part of “banoffee” at all here. To me, it’s mostly just a brisk breakfast blend with a bit of banana added in. Not a favorite, unfortunately!
