Sipdown Progress Challenge
January 2024 | A CTC tea

I pulled this single teabag from the TeaTiff TTB a few months back. Lupicia still feels like such a luxury to me so I jump at the change to try anything new from them. I steeped it for a minimal amount of time and it came out just right for milk and honey. It’s not bitter or too light. There’s a nice caramel undertone. It’s really lovely.

Sipdown Progress Challenge
January 2024 | My oldest tea

I have a handful of teas from 2015 (!), this being one of them. The others haven’t been opened yet so I decided to go ahead and work through this one as my oldest opened tea. It still tastes great, very smoky and not at all weak in flavor. I made a note last year that it was on my sipdown list for 2023 but I guess I never got around to finishing it. Maybe 2024 is the year!

Flavors: Smoke

Preparation
Boiling 5 min, 45 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

Happy New Year, Steepster!

I’ve finished off the last of my two favorite Nabo teas from Courtney and am so bummed to find that they are no longer available on the website. Here’s hoping they are seasonal and I can get them later in the year. This one and Som en Dröm have the same ingredients so far as I can tell, so I thought they might taste too similar. In reality, while both are berry-flavored, they are quite different. Som en Dröm is light in color and tastes like blueberries to me, though I don’t think there are actually blueberries in the mix. Skogsförjd is deeper and the base comes through much more here. The raspberry flavor shines. I’ll miss these two – I’ve been drinking nothing else for the past week or so. I’m hoping Nabo has something similar that I’ll enjoy just as much.

Edit: Using this for my January Sipdown Challenge – a tea I’d love to have all year!

Not very flavorful but definitely very caffeinated. Feeling a little resentful that it’s already got me amped up and I’m only one cup in for the day. Especially since it’s nothing special.

Boiling 5 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

One of my very favorites and it’s extra delicious today, so I’m bumping my rating this morning by a lot. This is a sipdown but it’s already on the grocery list so I expect I’ll have some more tea bags back in my hands in the next few days. This isn’t a complicated tea – as far as I know it just has the two ingredients (black tea and spearmint) but it’s really just perfect.

Flavors: Mint, Spearmint

Boiling 5 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

This is a favorite at the office around the less-tea’d.

One of my coworkers actually gave me my first bag of this one and then I bought a box because I liked it so much. Definitely work-friendly!

Profile

Bio

Lifetime student. Lover of books and paper and ink. Kitchen dweller. Aspiring herbalist, excessively proud cat lady, and tea fanatic. Thirty-something elder millennial. She/her.

I love flavored black teas most of all, always with cream and honey. I enjoy floral and fruity teas, as well as flavored or scented ones. I’m not overly fond of green or white teas, but I’ve found a few that I enjoy.

I’m open to tea swaps and/or just sharing what’s in my tea cabinet! Please reach out if you see something I have that you’d like to try. I do my best to update my cupboard regularly.

Favorites
Any and all black teas, smoky teas, raspberry, strawberry, red fruits, bergamot, chai spices, floral teas, caramel/toffee, jasmine, rose, vanilla, peaches, plums, valerian root, cinnamon, cardamom

Not a huge fan
White teas, green teas, artificial sweeteners, sarsaparilla, licorice, lemongrass, lavender, hot hibiscus, hibiscus in black tea blends

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband, James, who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-49: This tea is not good, but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

50-69: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

70-79: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

80-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.
