After my yellow Darjeeling tea earlier in the day I decided to pull out another yellow tea that I know I enjoy a bit more – which would be this one, it’s my gold standard yellow tea thus far in my tea drinking career. I just adore it.

I mean, it’s just so smooth overall and the notes of hazelnuts in it are really hard to beat. You just have to love a tea that’s so naturally nutty. We’ve also got some sweet grass, peanut, fresh hay, and butter notes going on too in addition to the hazelnuts. Just splendid. It’s one of those teas I wish I drank more of because it is such a treat every time I have it.

Drank this one hot a few nights ago, but a little underleafed because I didn’t want it to be overly tart. Well, I underleafed a little too much, because it just tasted really watered down and almost more apple-y than cranberry. I’ll take the tartness over a brew that weak.

Sipdown (218)!

Not a true sipdown because I still had a cup of this left, but I just had to share it with my coworker Sarah because she absolutely adores both white teas and teas with really delicate, supple fruit notes – and this is both. I hope she loves it!

As for my last cup of it, I chose to try it out iced with a touch of honey – meaning I’ve now had this cold brewed, iced and hot. Of the three preparation styles, there weren’t any I disliked but I do think this one produced the mildest flavour overall. It was just a very, very light bodied taste overall with really delicate notes of blueberry with fresh floral undertones. I think I would have liked to see a bit more of a headyness to the floral side of the tea, but the blueberry was really beautiful in how delicate it was and the combination of its own natural sweetness and the light additional sweetness of the honey was solid.

Also, the liquor colour was a brilliant and very clear lilac – and that just adds something really unique and special to the tea overall that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Today’s cold brew!

I think when you could brew this tea it just winds up coming out a little too sweet for my tastes overall. The banana notes in it are so good and rich though, and that’s probably why I keep coming back to this one as a cold brew even if it’s quite sweet overall. The chocolate is fine; I don’t love chocolate teas so when I’m not really in the mood for that kind of sweetness it can be a bit of a miss for me. It never tastes bad, though.

I also thought the coconut was pretty pronounced in this particular infusion.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

I should try it cold steeped. :)

Had a nice midday cuppa of this one today after some light grocery shopping!

Mostly I found this faintly nutty with a touch of sweetness and some really mild vegetal/grassy notes. The nuttyness reminded me a little more of the nutty notes you’d get in a Dragonwell rather than the sweeter nutty notes I’m used to seeing in yellow teas.

Now that I’ve had this more than once, I can definitely say that I don’t mind it overall but it’s definitely lower on the list of yellow teas I’ve had the pleasure to try.

This is a queued tasting note.

Drank this one in the morning as a commute to work tea – it probably wont be my last ever commute to work tea, but it certainly was my last commute to Value Village tea.

I think overall this had a really robustly timothy hay/straw taste that over powered pretty much everything else. Normally there are clear hay notes to this tea, but not to this degree so I’m not sure why they were so pronounced now. Other than those notes, there was a hint of malt and some underlying sweetness in the tail.

April’s Tea of The Month!

Also, if anyone hasn’t seen it I have to say that I really enjoyed DT’s April Fool’s prank this year… https://www.instagram.com/p/BSV64kllW1k/ Is it sad to say that I’d happily try any and all of these, though?

Anyway, for the first time ever I tried this one hot! Last year, it was REALLY popular but when I tried it iced I was super unimpressed so I never really explored it any further. I didn’t want to do that this year, so I definitely intend to try some different things out with this now that it’s a core tea.

- Like a tropical fruit punch
- Has the sweetness of pineapple/cranberry in a distinct way
- Without tangyness/tartness
- I like this one BETTER than I did last year; I feel like I was too critical last year

I mean, a cheese collections sounds unusual, but definitely plausible when you think about some of the tea flavors out there.

Closest thing I could find here on Steepster is RLT’s Cheese Pizza Matcha – but again, with how many strange things I’ve tasted over the years the idea of that doesn’t really phase me. Sadly, I don’t think Robert still carries the Cheese Pizza flavour on Matcha Outlet.

Tamarindel

That is sad, it sounds intriguing :( But yeah, in a world where tea can have leather notes, jalapeno notes, and beer notes, what’s a little cheese? Especially when some cheeses are so mellow and smooth — like brie and cream cheese.

Roswell Strange

I would LOVE to see a Brie & Apricot themed tea; one of the most unique kinds of ice cream I’ve ever had was Brie and Apricot and it was SO good. Something like that with a milder base, like a White Peony, could be SO GOOD.

Tamarindel

Oh that would be amazing!

Just finished a cup of this!

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I’d love it because I’m not huge on super lemony things, but I thought the blueberry pairing was intriguing and the base sounded interesting too so I grabbed a sample to test out.

Well, I kind of adore this! It tastes almost exactly like a Blueberry Lemon Muffin! The only thing I think you would need to change to really drive home that flavour would be some butteryness, but I think if you added a splash of milk the creaminess would be a suitable substitute and the slightly richer mouthfeel would work really well. Also, it had a slight bit more sweetness/juicyness than I think your average blueberry/lemon would have but not to the point it’s out of the realm of possibility.

Only thing flavour wise, rather than ‘accuracy wise’ that wasn’t totally up my alley was the super long, lingering lemon/lemongrass notes. Paired with the blueberry, they were AMAZING but the blueberry taste fades much quicker than the lemon and when you’re left with only the lemon it was a bit much. Not bad though. Not by a long shot.

Really, truly this definitely gets pretty close to perfect, imo.

Drank this one yesterday!

I grabbed this one for two reasons; the first was that I’ve been more into Darjeeling teas lately than usual so it appealed to me for that reason. The second was that I thought that a “Potato Pancake” themed tea for Saint Patrick’s Day was really unique/original and I liked that it was something super out side of the box.

I can’t say I’ve ever had Boxty before, but I have had Latkes – and if the two are similar at all then I imagine I’d probably be a fan of the former.

I drank this one iced and straight; here were my notes:

- Interesting overall flavours
- It’s honey/vanilla in a clear but not overly sweet/cloying way
- With more of a potato pancake undertone?
- I feel like I wouldn’t be able to identify it as potato pancakes blindly though
- Didn’t think the Darjeeling base came through super clearly
- Mostly malty and autumnal?

I’m really happy to have tried this one, and I definitely enjoyed it though I’d wager the profile would work better for hot prep. In the end, it doesn’t de-thrown my all time favourite potato tea, Latkes & Applesauce (from Butiki) but I think just going off everything I know about Boxty, it does it pretty good justice. I wouldn’t want to buy more, but I doubt I’ll have any problems finishing the amount I do have.

Made this one iced at work.

It’s been SO nice out this last week that I haven’t had a single hot tea on shift in three days; just iced teas because it just suits the weather so much. I picked this one purely because I realized that soon we wont have any left in store and wont be getting it back, and I feel like I haven’t really explored it all that much overall.

I didn’t mind it, but I found it a lot lighter in flavour than I recall it tasting the last time I had it. Every note here was sort of just a “hint of …” and when nothing really steps up for the main flavour it can make for a sort of muddled and confusing drink. Even still, the very light apple, jasmine, rose, and strawberry notes were pleasant. I just wanted more of them.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
