Best set for traveling + how to gong fu on the go?!
Hi folks and tea heads! I like to hike and camp and want to bring tea and buys gong fu set for on the go—there is a set I like from West China Tea. It is linked here :
Any tips for a great travel set? Any advice on outdoor gong fu cha how tos?
My biggest question is how to get the water temp right? Do folks boil the water with a camp stove ? (If outdoors?) do you recommend taking water in a thermos? If so what thermos would you recommend?
That tea set doesn’t look very travel friendly to me, I try and choose breakproof tea ware to travel. Glass and porcelain don’t do well for me, and most of my metal go mugs are dented :)
If you are brewing larger sized leaves, or don’t mind a few floaties in your tea the tuffy tea strainer does very well. Cleans and empties easily.
I have a non-microwaveable plastic ‘sea to summit’ mug w/lid I use when camping. Its not quite as ideal for travel as it doesn’t microwave, and its 16 oz size is a bit big to use with the tuffy steeper, but I make it work.
As for hot water, I use an old beat up stanley 40 oz thermos that keeps water hot all day if its boiling and full. Its decorated with stickers from my travels and works very well for steeped or bagged tea on the go, even if it’s a bit heavy. A very lightweight 20 oz kettle is ok for boiling water, but I tend to use a titanium cookpot as it holds more and its just going into the thermos.
Tea is a great way to stay hydrated at elevation, I tend to drink a lot of it, and bring tea where temperature isn’t an issue, save the whites and greens for brewing in civilization.
Thanks Michelle! Appreciate it!
I would boil the water with a camp stove. That is normally how I do it when I am out. I think Crimson Lotus had a travel gong fu set but I normally just pack my shibo and take it and the cups with me.
When I travel, I use a portable immersion water heater to boil water for tea. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M0TB9PI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_A2729Y2MNJ9NC8M7BCG8
However, it still requires being near an electrical outlet. I wish someone would invent a USB powered mini kettle or thermos to be able to heat water on the go. I’ve used a thermos to hold hot water and it works okay but I find the water temperature starts dropping rapidly when it’s half full.
Mmmmmmm that’s great to know!! Thank youuuu !!!!
I am newish to tea and just found this community, but I received this as a gift and am excited to use it. It seems well thought out. I really enjoy the fact that there isn’t much plastic able to touch the tea in the design so I should be able to brew different types of tea in it without flavor contamination. I have another small ceramic set in a carrying case, but I just know I’ll break it if I actually try to bring it places.
They suggest just using a thermos for hot water. So far as I have seen, classic thermos brand is still a really good option. In their videos it seems they often have to bring their water in when they are tasting in remote locations.
