Recent Tasting Notes

I love herbal teas but I tend to shy away from the overly floral ones. This one, even tho there are huge rose petals in it, wasn’t overly floral tasting. There was an odd flavor I just couldn’t get my head around, but this one overall isn’t too bad. Can’t say I would reach for it again, but not a bad cuppa for the day.

Happy Sipping Saturday!

Now this is something you don’t see everyday. . at least I hadn’t or hadn’t in a while. A tea with cilantro in it. I had to try it. I love cilantro. If I could, I would add it to every meal I eat. I know a lot of people can’t stand it. I think its one of those herbs that people either love or hate.

Here are the rest of my ramblings on this tasting tea. . . . Enjoy!

Someone’s got to like it! It tastes like metal to me. Good old genetics.

While I enjoy passionflower, the lemongrass in this tea ruins the taste by overpowering it.

Day 5 Amanda ‘SoggyEnderman’ Wilson Tea Advent Calendar
I just feel like I drank a cup of fresh mountain rain water infused with jasmine and roses. This tea is beautiful! I brewed mine in a Gaiwan with 170 degree water for 1 minute. This tea reminds me of late Spring, early Summer. The floral notes are just right to me, they are not at all over powering.

Definitely need to try this one in a gaiwan

I don’t know too much about this tea because it’s no longer listed on their website.

I wanted something after dinner to relax with but not to wake me up too much.

The tea smells sweet, opening up with jasmine and ending with a hint if rose and more sweetness. The taste is clean, grassy, sweet, and flowery. It is a bit watery, but the floral taste is not too strong to be off-putting.

The cup smells citrusy with a strong finish of mint. The first note on the sip is the stevia with the mint rising up mid-sip and finishing up with the stevia again. This tea is meant to be relaxing, but it’s actually a bit energizing due to the mint and sugar. I wish they would leave the stevia out of the blend so that I could sweeten it to my own tastes. Hot, it tastes a bit too sweet for me. I’ve brewed some up for an iced tea and see if that’s more up my alley.

I’m staying up, waiting for my younger brother and sister to return from a concert in the city. I’ll sip on this while I finish up the last episode of “Orange is the New Black.” ^ _ ^

I am going to open today’s blog with a bit of back-story and a TMI warning. I know some people get all squicky at the mention of PMS and the monthly curse, so if that is you…well, there are plenty of other teas I have written about if you need a tea review fix. As for back-story, well, I could give gore-filled details and sob stories, but it is not really necessary. What you need to know is I do not have periods, I have two-three week long hormone crazed events that culminate in a week of agony, anemia, and general not being able to function. Endometriosis is an evil, evil thing.

So when I saw that one of my favorite tea companies has a new herbal blend for giving us ladies a break, you can bet your sweet tea cups that I had to get myself some. Ladies’ TLC by Raizana Teas is a really pretty blend of Lemongrass, Rose Petals, Horsetail, Natural Rose Flavor, Dong Quai (Angelica Root), and Stevia. Dong Quai is THE go to herbal remedy for lady problems, in fact I am pretty sure it is the first herbal remedy I learned about when I started studying herbal medicine when I was thirteen, coincidence? No…definitely not. The aroma of the tea is pretty pungent, it is one of the biggest downsides to Dong Quai, I have had it in pill form before and could smell its distinct sharp root and earthy aroma through the bottle. It is not a bad smell, it is just very strong and pretty medicinal. There are also notes lemongrass, roses, and a touch of hay, but these are subtle notes compared to the presence that is Dong Quai.

The aroma of the wet leaves (and flowers and roots) is still intensely pungent. There are side notes of roses and hay and a finish of celery. The liquid is pretty identical to the wet leaves, except it is more subdued and the floral aroma is stronger at the finish.

I am afraid! I have had tea with Dong Quai in it before and it was super bitter and medicinal, Dong Quai (along with Black Cohosh and Valerian) is one of the most medicinal bitter tasting roots I have run into. One apprehensive sip later and I was pleasantly surprised! The tea is quite sweet, which is great for PMS sugar cravings, there are also strong rose notes and a distinct pineapple taste to the tea. As the tea cools it takes on a celery taste to it and there is a bit of a root taste at the finish, similar to burdock. The best part is, it really takes the edge of my cramps, granted it is not as strong as taking an advil, but since my stomach does not really allow me to take any kinds of pain medication, this tea is a life saver. Raizana, you have done it again, you created a medicinal tea that works and tastes good, bravo!

I dyed my hair blue again today, I know, I know, I just dyed it a couple weeks ago, but I botched it a bit (I am awful at dying my own hair) and needed to fix it. Now it is bright cobalt at the roots that fades to a deep indigo at the tips. I am happy with it and hopefully won’t have to alter my hair for a while, except to trim my bangs of course. Now if I could find some way to tame my crazy cowlick!

Today’s tea is a tea for anyone who suffers for insomnia, Raizana Tea’s SleepyTea. A blend of passionflower, Valerian, Blueberry Leaves, Chamomile, Lavender Flowers, Rosemary, Spearmint, Lemongrass, Stevia, and Natural Orange Flower. A very colorful pile of flowers and herbs! The aroma is a great blend of plant matter, mixing herbaceous notes, floral notes, and straw notes. The lavender and lemongrass is quite strong, a strange blend of smells, but not an unpleasant one.

Once steeped the wet leaves are quite sweet, a bit fruity and a bit floral. There is also a strong citrus and herbaceous tone, I am assuming from the lemongrass (my arch nemesis, we meet again) there is a hint of chamomile straw notes that actually calm the lemongrass down, it is a neat effect, there is this kick of lemongrass and then it is soothed by chamomile. The liquid is mostly the straw like aroma of chamomile and the green yet lemony aroma of lemongrass, there is a very delicate finish of lavender.

The taste is really quite sweet and lemony, the taste reminds me of Lemonheads but without the really sour aspect of that candy. The lemony sweetness fades to a mellow floral blend of lavender and chamomile with a finish of herbaceous. There is not really a mint taste to the tea, but it does have a nice cooling quality as it goes down the throat. I am not going to say this tea knocked me out and put me to sleep, when my insomnia is acting up it takes powerful sleeping meds and even that is not consistent, but this tea was very relaxing and certainly took the edge off.

I am stumped, I cannot think of a clever opening to today’s review so I guess I will just fill you all in on how life is for me. I folded all 200 Advent Calender envelopes in more or less one sitting, I couldn’t sleep so I stayed up all night watching Doctor Who and folding, it was very nostalgic. It is getting dramatically colder so there is a cat in my lap, the other cat is extremely happy and playful since she likes the cold. Also my stomach is being a real jerk so I decided to try out another of Raizana Teas herbal blends.

This tea is geared towards soothing the savage belly beast with its easy to remember name, DigestTea. Made from Cilantro, Dill Weed, Passionflower, Spearmint, Chamomile, Lemongrass, Stevia, and Natural Papaya flavors. The aroma is sweet and minty with notes of chamomile herbaceous tones. There is also a bit of papaya sweetness that lingers at the end. The aroma is very clean and it smells refreshing, sinus cleansing! As I pull the bag away completely I notice there is a tiny, tiny hint of dill, which I really liked.

As the tea steeps I start to notice the lemongrass aroma wafting out of my leaves, it is a bit strong and made me sneeze! Oddly I did not find the lemongrass off-putting like a usually do, I guess because it mixes really well with the mint, dill, and chamomile aromas. The liquid, sans steeping basket, has a very savory aroma. To me it smells like a really good soup or pickle spices, lemony and dill with a hint of mint and cilantro. I almost want to make a marinade using some of these together because it smells delicious.

The taste, however, is not savory at all, it is sweet like papaya. The taste also reminds me a little of lemon poppy-seed cake. The savory herbs are not really present in the taste, it is mild and sweet. This tea is really perfect for days when your stomach is being a real jerk and most things make you feel kinda ill. Withing a few minutes of drinking this tea my stomach was soothed and I felt much better. The aftertaste of the tea is sweet with a hint of tingling mint, as it cools the mint also becomes stronger and sweeter.

PureTea by Raizana Teas was one of those instant ‘I have to try this tea’ the moment I saw it, the reason why is because it is formulated to detox the liver and aid in gallbladder health. I do not have a gallbladder, sadly about six years ago it up and died but my liver misses it and just does not know what to do with all its bile (the gall of some organs) so eating can cause it to freak out sometimes. The magical ingredients in this tea are Rooibos, Indian Sarsaparilla Root, Roasted Dandelion Root, Burdock Root, Milk Thistle, Stevia, Mango Flavors, and Chicory, all herbs that are supposed to be good at detox and gallbladder health. The aroma of this tea is sweet and very pleasantly herbal, I am always pleased when a medicinal tea actually smells like something worth consuming. It blends the leafy, earthy, and slightly bitter root aromas with a fruity tropical sweetness for really intriguing and clean smelling dry leaves.

Time to break in my nice new teacup! Once brewed the aroma of the Rooibos is much stronger, very earthy with a touch of sweet citrus. There is, of course, a strong herbaceous aroma that blends really well with the Rooibos earthiness. The liquid has creamy sweet notes which are a bit mouthwatering, also strong herbaceous notes. The aroma is a mix between a medicinal tea and a dessert tea, if only all medicine smelled so good.

Well, I can certainly say this is one of the best tasting medicinal teas I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. The flavor is a mix of tropical fruit (more papaya than mango) sweetness and Rooibos earthiness with a hint of fresh leaves. There is none of that bitter taste that a lot of medicinal teas have, it is a tea I can see myself drinking for pleasure and not just because I need it for health reasons. As the tea cools it takes on a honey sweetness as well. But with medicinal teas taste is not everything, how I feel is also important. The first thing I notice is my insides feel cooled, similar to the cooling effect of mint tea, it also seems to have a mild expectorant quality since my chest seems to be loosening up. I do not feel as ‘heavy’ as I had been feeling lately, my body feels cleaner, it also seems to be a mild diuretic so detoxing seems to be happening. I think I am going to have to add this as a daily tea since I also read that Indian Sarsaparilla is supposed to help with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriasis. If I am really lucky this tea will combat bile dumps after eating too, I guess I need to eat a really fatty meal and drink this tea immediately to find out.
