This was a sample sent for review from Just Organic Tea Thanks guys!

I brewed this according to the package directions, which is not how I would normally do my iced tea, but it turned out really well! I used a big ole quart mason jar and steeped it for 4 minutes in hot ass water. I served it up over a glass of ice and sipped on it while making dinner and doing general chore type stuff.

I didn’t really like the fact that it was in a bag, I was tempted to take it out and steep it how I would normally, but I decided to humor the tea. The company said that it would be sold in loose on the site anyway, which is a plus for me. Now, I usually cold brew my tea overnight, (or 8ish hours) strain and go, but I didn’t want to wait. I may cold brew the next samples they sent, just to see how the bag holds up.
I quite liked the base they used for the tea, it has been a hot minute since I have had an iced black tea. It was smooth and not astringent at all. It went down smooth. The strawberry flavor I did not care for, but I knew that coming in. It may also need noting that I did not use any sweetener. It was ever so slightly sweet on it’s own.
Although I would never reach for this tea by myself, I would definitely dig the black tea on it’s own, which I see that there is a sample of it included in my package from them. Hmmm, I think I know what I will try next….

Thanks for the great feedback! This really helps. I think we’re going to go entirely loose-leaf in the end, but we wanted to make the samples accessible for anyone.

I’ve had this several times now, and just haven’t figured out what to say.

The biggest reason being that it’s not a peach tea. Or apricot. Or stone fruit at all.

I was definitely deceived by the name, and it’s pretty clear I wasn’t alone in this. Perhaps a name change would do it some favors?

This is more like a floral white tea, with strong (and dominating) cinnamon and some suggestions of other spices.

I’ll probably try mixing this with a peach white at some point to see if I get something peach cobbler-y from it, at least.

A sample from MissB. :) Thank you!

It’s a rather nondescript black tea, tbh. Nothing particularly special to me. Dry it smells malty and like stone fruits. Steeped it’s a somewhat sweet, malty, stonefruity black tea. As it sits it starts to get a bit bitter/astringent in a way I don’t care for.

While it is a nice tea that doesn’t need additives, I wouldn’t seek it out as there are other flavour profikes and also stronger morning teas that I prefer.

I steeped this short, and I’m glad I did. I think that steeping 3-5 minutes would be way too much, and the astringency would drown out the malt and fruit flavours.

Disclosure: I’ve been putting off trying this for the better part of six months. Hibiscus and I have a strange, uncomfortable relationship that mostly involves me not liking it.

The blend is beautiful! The bright blue of the corn flowers is so striking and really pops. There are big dried blueberries and it smells of autumnal spices with cinnamon leading the way.

It’s definitely very very much hibiscus, though. It lacks the metallic quality that it can sometimes carry, but is still sharp/tart and a bit bitter. There’s an undercurrent of sweet cinnamon flavor, but it’s just not enough to redeem this for me.

I found this in my stash and I feel terrible as Just Organic sent it for review ages ago! So sorry! Tulsi is definitely my thing and this was definitely still delicious despite not being as fresh as it should have been when I steeped it up. I love the flavors of tulsi, this holy basil- it’s definitely a change of pace, something unique, especially when I’m a tea addict and have at least a couple types of tea in every day. The flavor is sometimes citrus, spicy, vegetal, sweet, minty, savory, refreshing, really an odd mix of tastes and yet somehow it always works. Very full of unique lingering flavor. It might have been a while back that I tried this one, but this one might be my favorite from Just Organic! To the shopping list this will go, but I don’t see it on their site… that’s too bad.

Cooking TTB #6

The dry leaf scent of this reminds me so much of David’s Tea Coffee Cake! Upon sipping, I really don’t get a serious vanilla taste, instead I’m getting a lot of muted cocoa and cake notes. Not quite what I was expecting but it’s still tasty… In fact, it makes me want to go and brew up a cup of Coffee Cake!! Doh!!

This was a nice refreshing taste on earl grey. It destine have as strong of a bergamot flavor as may be expected with something called “epic”, but it was flavorful nonetheless. The leaves gave a nice rich and citrus scent but I’ve noticed after the first 2 runs of leaves, it tends to lighten in color and disperse flavor quickly. A nice tea for some earl grey flavor, but nothing for those die-hard “Earl Grey-ers”. Not what i would call epic.

Tea of the morning. This is another sample that came to me from the kind Naylynn via the Christmas Card Swap. Thank you!

When I think Irish Breakfast a few words automatically pop in my head: strong, bold, and malt. Irish breakfast teas are famous for their thick malty flavor that stands up to cream and sugar so very well. Today I learned there are Irish Breakfast teas (or at least one tea) that break that rule. I love a rule breaker.

The first thing that caught my eye was the low water temp for this tea. It’s recommended at 195°F, and since I’ve never had this tea before I followed the directions. I’m glad I did. I took my first sip and possibly gave myself whiplash. You can imagine the double take I did at my mug when I sipped this and found a distinct lack of malty notes. I sipped again and what I tasted was a rich, creamy, wonderfully thick tea that tasted like the French rolls my favorite bakery sells. Oh… holy… yum. As wonderful as the bready note was the texture of the tea was what had me smiling. It was like sipping velvet. As the tea cooled the malt flavor began to appear, and I got more of a traditional Irish Breakfast feel from the tea, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Next time I have this (Naylynn sent a generous sample!) I might add cream and sugar just to see, but this is wonderfully tasty all on its own.

This sample came from madametj. I don’t generally go for straight-up rooibos, but I have been enjoying my flavored rooibos blends lately so why not? The leaves are small and a medium red-orange-brown in color. Dry scent is somewhat medicinal, somewhat woody. It steeps up a dark mahogany color with some orange tones.

The steeped liquid smells woody and somewhat sweet (it actually smells a touch like marzipan). It tastes smooth and woody, with just a bit of deep caramelized sweetness. I’m not sure this is something I’d drink on a regular basis, but I’m happy it isn’t medicinal at all. However, it is making my mouth and throat feel a little bit scratchy… :(

Backlog:

A lovely Peony. I tasted familiar “white peony” notes such as sweet, vegetal tones and notes of melon and hints of a crisp ‘airy’ note that evokes thoughts of the air after a cooling rain. I also picked up on notes of lettuce and that’s not something I often taste with white peony.

A really nice pure white peony, I like that it’s organic.

Teeny Tiny TTB Round 2

I admit, I was unsure about trying this one. I’ve had a couple of other samples from Just Organic and I did not enjoy them or find them memorable at all. But since this was one of only two unflavored blacks in the box, I looked at the reviews here on Steepster and decided it seemed worth trying. The leaves are dark, wide, and extremely short. They have that reddish hue that reminds me of Japanese blacks. Unfortunately, this bag smells like sugary cinnamon, clearly it was a victim of scent contamination…

Steeped aroma is surprisingly nondescript – perhaps a touch of vegetal? Meh, nondescript is definitely the correct word for this tea. There’s a fair amount of malt, but nothing else besides a generic “black tea” taste like you’d find in unsweetened iced tea. I can taste a touch of grassy/leafy flavor and it leaves a weird aftertaste in my mouth. Meh!

Thanks again for the samples, Just Organic! So sorry it has taken this long… I guess I would avoid rooibos but I don’t regret steeping this cup up! It’s actually an above average rooibos. This one reminded me of wood smoked BBQ somehow. Nice flavor! And steeped in a teabag, I wasn’t getting any of the mouth irritation that some lower quality rooibos might have. Nothing but nice things to say about this one! But it’s still plain rooibos, so there isn’t MUCH to say about this one. An enjoyable no-caffeine cup late at night. Can’t all rooibos be like this?

Backlog. I think I may have underleafed this tea this morning. It was less maltier than usual and just not quite as flavorful in general. I mean, it was still a nice, solid black tea, but it tasted a little more generic because of the weakness of the flavors. Fortunately, I have enough left to make a few more cups and figure out the best leaf ratio for my work mug!

I’ve been pretty terrible about writing tasting notes lately, but only because I’ve been drinking most of the same teas over and over again. One that I’ve been reaching for many mornings is this tea. A little goes a long way leaf-wise, so I’m happily surprised at how long this sample from the T&C TTB is going to last me. I think I really enjoy it because of its boldness without the usual accompanying bitterness that loud black teas can have. And it’s been fairly hard to mess this one up, which is great because my brain does not function well in the morning.

Another gem from the T&C TTB! I think I’m gonna swipe the rest of the sample for myself, actually. I steeped this one this morning while looking for a nice wake me up kind of black tea (190 F, ~3 min). While this was a hair less bold than I would want it to be, it made up for it by being so clean and smooth. The malty flavors were there without any bitterness and only a tiny bit of astringency. I can see myself reaching for this one in the mornings when I want a reliable cup of tea to start the day off.

This seems really light for a black tea! I can get the apricot notes, but I’m also getting this aftertaste that is similar to the aftertaste of the ocean, but without the salt. Weird, right?! I get more flavor from it cold than I do hot and the flavor is very light and subtle. It’s very nice, but I’m a fan of bolder flavors.

Oh man! I didn’t pay attention to the recommended steeping temp and steeped this way too hot. It ended up wicked bitter, but adding cream and sugar made if palatable again. It’s not the same as the first time I had it, but there is a little malt shining through and it is helping me wake and recover from a rough night with a sick two year old.

Tealizzy

Aww, I hope your little one gets better soon! Everyone, including me, has been sick lately! Fortunately, we’re all better at my house.

Dustin

Thanks, I hope so too! I think we are nearing the end of this round of sickness so I’m hoping last night was a one off thing. :/

This tea is really interesting! It almost has a spice on it. It is really smooth, has a little malt to it. I added some cream and sugar and WOW. This is really good. I need to hang onto this and have some more.

A tasty blend. Not my favorite vanilla blend I’ve ever had (they can’t all be my favorites, can they?) and I suspect the reason is the carob. Not a fan of carob. Just not. I like chocolate, I don’t like that fake-y chocolate taste of carob. Never have.

But, as I mention in my full-length review of this tea – http://sororiteasisters.com/2014/08/06/just-naughty-nilla-black-tea-from-just-organic-tea/ – I think that this tea has potential. The black tea base is well-rounded and full tasting. Notes of malt. Robust. It would make a nice breakfast tea. (A little dessert for breakfast!)

Ubacat

I love carob and don’t think it’s fake tasting at all. It has it’s own taste but yes different than chocolate. I like to mix the two together (carob and cocoa) when making my fudge brownie. The cocoa gives them a deep rich chocolate taste and the carob adds a sweetness and silkiness.

LiberTEAS

Yeah, I’d probably like carob like that. I just don’t like it when it’s used as a “like chocolate” experience because it’s really not chocolate. When I was younger, it seemed like that was what it was marketed as – a chocolate substitute.

Ubacat

It does have a similarity to Chocolate but is very different in other ways. I agree. You can’t appreciate carob for what it is when you’re expecting chocolate.

This chai wasn’t as spicy as I hoped for. It’s still a tasty chai, but I was hoping for a really zesty chai and it didn’t quite live up to that.

The medley of spices is a warm and comforting combination of cinnamon, clove and cardamom. I wish there was a bit of ginger and/or black pepper in this to give it some zing. The orange brightens the cup a little.

Backlog from I don’t know when:

Hi guys! I’m sorry I haven’t been on that much. Rest assured that I’m still drinking tea.

I was looking forward to trying this as I know it’s the base green for JO’s Just Marvelous Mint Green. I’ve found the mint/green blend to taste kind of odd, and I always assumed that it was because of the steeping time involved in the mint.

However, having tasted the base green, I can attest that the weird, chemically, funky flavour I’m noticing is definitely due to the green tea they use, and not the mint.

This is disappointing.

I only have about a spoonful of this left, but I’m going to sip it down soon. Now I just have to steel myself to finish off the mint/green blend.

Cheri

Yeah, it’s kinda weird.

Backlog from a few days ago.

This is a really bergamot-heavy EG. It’s not the most bergamotty one I’ve ever had, but it’s up there. Glad I only got a small sample of this – I have enough left to make a quick sipdown.

Sipdown!

I had just a smidgen of this left – enough to make a single cup. It smells really nice and spicy today, like gingery banana bread.

I think this was my favourite blend out of all the ones I’ve tried from JO. The orange peel adds a subtle touch at the back of the mouth.
