I had this tea yesterday . Brewed it up with a bit less leaf than the sencha from the same company. I found the first brewing of the sencha had too much umami for me. This time with a bit less leaf and shorter brew time ( 30 sec instead of 1 min ) at 60C. It came out perfect. Grassy, good umami but not overpowering, very sweet.

Next brewing was at 80C for 15 sec. A little bitterness crept into that one with a bit of astringency. Umami was toned down but still good.

I did one more infusion after that and hit my caffeine level. I love Japanese teas but I hit my caffeine level much quicker than with Chinese greens.

All 3 teas I tried from this company were great. Thanks Allan for giving me a chance to try them out. If they offer smaller quantities and better shipping rates in the future, I may buy from them.

I did two infusions on this tea today and really enjoyed it. I never tried more infusions but I suspect it does not have quite the lasting power of the sencha I had yesterday from the same company. However, this is more of my type of tea. A good umami taste but not overly strong. A bit grassy and a slight astringency. There’s a lighter sweetness to it and a slight nuttiness that comes through. Overall, a pretty good one to brew casually with cup and infuser.

Glad you liked this one too.

It’s more of a no fuss tea compared to the other one. Some of the high quality Japanese teas can be a bit fussy with the brewing.

Yay! I get to try this sencha from a seller on Ebay.

It is pretty good quality , a bit more like a gyokuro than a sencha because the leaves were so tiny and dark green. I did the first infusion at a low temperature (60C). It was sweet and umami very very strong. Very soupy. At time it was too much umami for me.

2nd infusion was 80C for 15 sec. This one was much better balanced for me. Umami still strong but not dominating, sweet and a bit grassy. I got 3 or 4 more infusions from this before the flavour started to go. That’s pretty amazing for a sencha.

This tea is pretty good. It is a well rounded mix of bitterness, astringency, sweetness and has an umami taste to it. This is not as good as the gyokuro by Tablinshop but was good. Not sure if I would buy this again. So far all of Tablinshop’s teas have seemed to be high quality tea.

I brewed this three times in a 200ml Kyusu with 7.7g leaf and 175 degree water. I steeped it for 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min.

I am not the biggest fan of green tea but I do buy them occasionally. With my recent order to Tablinshop in Japan I bought several. This one is pretty good. It has a mixture of three notes really, a sweet note, the tea is mildly sweet. It also has a mild vegetal note and an umami note to it. No one note seems to be dominant but they are all about equal to each other. At the rate I go through green tea I may not end up finishing this while it is still good is the only problem with this tea. He sold it in quantities of 190g only. In fact that was how I identified the package. He doesn’t label teas in English unfortunately. But I had bought three green teas of three different weights so I surmised this was the sencha because it weighed in at 190g. At least that much I could read. Luckily the Japanese don’t use different numbers from us or I would have been in trouble figuring out which tea was which tea.

I steeped this tea three times in a 200ml teapot with 6.5g leaf and 175 degree water. I steeped the leaves for 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min.

Got this in the mail yesterday from Japan. Don’t know if I should have given it time to acclimate or not. It was good, this season’s harvest I believe, spring 2016. It came in a package only marked in Japanese but as I ordered three green teas of three different weights I discerned this was the Gyokuro. The leaves are really green, really green and very fine. The tea was very sweet with a umami taste. No bitterness. Gave it three steeps in my new Kyusu also received yesterday from Japan. I like this seller Tablinshop. I think he sells quality pots and good tea. The only thing I don’t like is his shipping, very expensive. I went for EMS which got the package to me in three days but it was pricey. Normally, I would be tempted to add sugar to green tea but I immediately found that this didn’t need any. It was sweet by itself.

I brewed this three times in a 200ml Kyusu Teapot with 7.3g leaf and 175 degree water. I steeped it for 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min. I would definitely recommend this tea and this seller for fans of Japanese teas. He’s not as good a value as Yunomi but has excellent tea and a big selection of teawares both for loose tea and matcha.

Japanese teas can be tasty, but bitter

MrQuackers

Don’t forget to eat the leaves.

MrQuackers

Yame, itself is in the south of Japan. It is the largest growing region for Gyokuro.

First thing about this tea is it is a Hojicha. If you have never drank one they are different. It is roasted but not in the manner of a Wuyi oolong. The roast profile on this one is fairly nice. There is something of a sweet flavor behind the roast, somewhat hard to find but there. The dry leaves appear to be a mixture of leaf and stem. Some hojichas are made with stems so this is not surprising to me. This was a moderately expensive tea. I think I paid around $25 for 150g of tea. The shipping on this tea was amazing. I paid for EMS shipping and it arrived in about two or three days.

I brewed this once in an 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 4 tsp leaf and 175 degree water for 3 min. While I recommend this tea for people who like Hojicha. Be aware that if you haven’t tried Hojicha you may hate it. Took me a while to get used to them.

I like my hojicha with soymilk :)

Cwyn

I’d be boiling mine.

AllanK

I don’t drink soymilk but I could try it with almond milk.

AllanK

Does it get bitter when boiled?

Cwyn

I don’t think so, but I generally use only a little bit of tea. By boiling I can use less…

This is a very vegetal green tea. It’s not bad just too vegetal for my tastes. It was a free gift from an EBay seller who fouond himself out of stock of the teapot I had purchased. When I agreed to take a different free teapot he gave me this tea as a gift. I think I used too much tea and overbrewed it so that doesn’t help.

Will you be reviewing your new tea pots?

Liquid Proust

Free teapot or replacment? :p

AllanK

No I wish the teapot had been free it was simply a different Kyusu.

This is a bright green, vegetal and somewhat sweet brew. It is I think a mixture of sencha and matcha. When I transferred the tea into a tin I could see a cloud of matcha dust left behind. There is definitely matcha in there. The surprising thing about this tea is the lack of bitterness. I was expecting a little. It does have a strong vegetal quality to it.

I am noticing a little bitterness as the tea cools. Didn’t notice it when the tea was hot.

DeliriumsFrogs

This sounds really good! :)

AllanK

It was good but different compared to what I’m used to.

Either this is just better Hojicha than the other I have tried from Simpson and Vail or it is growing on me, perhaps both. It’s got a nice roasted flavor that is not too intense with only a little in the way of a bitter aftertaste, if that is even how to describe the roasted aftertaste. There is also a sweet note behind the roasted flavor, noticeable. There is a third note that I just have no way to describe but I think it is also a by product of the roasting process. I chose this one this afternoon because Hojicha is known to be low in caffeine and I have to be up early again tomorrow.

Bought this again recently, not realizing it was the exact same Matcha I’d bought from him before. I made this matcha too strong. I used three matcha spoons full of matcha and I’d guess maybe five to six ounces of water maybe a little more. It was still too strong for my tastes and I found myself adding sweetener. I think it would be better with less matcha maybe half as much. It has very much of a green vegetal taste to it. But not as much sweetness as I have found from other Matchas I have bought. I cannot claim to be an expert on Matcha, having only had about five or so. The one I bought from Yunomi tasted better than this but this might improve dramatically with less matcha.

This tea is good, but is a little too raw in nature for me. I had to add sweetener. I am drinking this in a brand new tea cup that I received today from Japan. I really don’t know where to start on a review about matcha as I have little experience. I can never seem to get it to froth like in the pictures. Still, this was a nice cup of tea. I made it small because matcha is known to be high in caffeine, not so much because it has more, but because you get all of it.

I understand. Well I guess I can imagine a lack of froth, as I had a frothy matcha the othet week, prepared by the tea shop I was in.
