Recent Tasting Notes

Streetshop88 has sold me some incredibly good teas. This is not one of them. While on the plus side this had substantially cleared of fermentation flavor it also had a decided sour note to it. I gave this eight steeps. While the sour note had substantially disappeared by steep eight it had still been strong for the first few steeps. Perhaps in a year of aging it will lose the sour note, I don’t know.

I steeped this eight times in a 170ml teapot with 10g leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec.

This is an inexpensive and tasty tea from Streetshop88. On or about the fifth steep I noticed the fact that I had not tasted any fermentation flavor at all. This tea has completely cleared. Judging by the strength of the tea I believe the claim of ancient tree to be possible. It started out quite strong in the early steeps and slightly bitter as well as sweet. There is often an unpleasant taste associated with older ripe teas, this had none of that. This was very good tea overall. Another winner from Streetshop88.

I brewed this ten times in a 170ml teapot with 10.4g leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 min. It was still fairly strong in the tenth infusion and I think it would have gone 15 steeps at least.

The first time I read this I thought it said expensive, so I went to the website, and having found it was cheap, came back and realised my mistake. Anyway, good review and I’m pleased you can verify it is from ancient trees :)

AllanK

I can’t truly verify it but I think I believe it in this case. It was strong tea.

Finally got around to gongfuing this. It is much better steeped this way. It had a sweet note from the beginning with little bitterness. There was a fair amount of fermentation flavor but it was not unpleasant or fishy. There were some notes of chocolate in there for at least three or four steeps after the tea had opened up. This is not an expensive tea as they go. This is one I definitely find myself recommending.

I steeped this ten times in a 160ml Solid Silver Teapot with two dragon balls or approximately 15.3g and boiling water. I gave it two 10 second rinses. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 minute.

Theses are good. They are very earthy and sweet, quite thick with fermentation flavor. There is a slight note to them I do not like as well but it is not very noticeable. I think they are not as good as the equivalent called Puerh Pearls from my local tea shop Clipper Ship Tea Company. They were quite large and I brewed a little too much tea at about 15g because I was too lazy to break one in half.

I brewed these once in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 15g tea (two balls) and boiling water for 30 sec.

Decided to make this tonight without adding any of the tangerine peel. I didn’t feel like having that smoky of a brew. It is sweet and tasty. I did not have the energy to gongfu it so it only got brewed western style. It has a fair amount of fermentation flavor but the sweet notes dominate over the earthy character of the puerh.

I brewed this one time in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 9g leaf and boiling water for 30 sec.

Notes: I ordered a 100g piece after reading a favourable review by AllanK.
Summary: Good tea, with a nice raisin sweetness and some throat stimulation, but short lived.

5g in Gaiwan.

Dry leaf: Very high compression. Outside of the cake piece looks like good leaves; inside it is so compressed that it looked like different leaves.
Aroma is hay.
How Gaiwan: Grey smoke; some clay; fruit.
Wet leaf: Fruit; grey smoke.

Rest for 50 minutes.

10s – Pale salmon liquor. Very smooth, light smoke, sweet raisin fruitiness. Lingering sweet, slightly fizzy finish. 70/100.
15s – Pale salmon liquor. Long sweetness, gently stimulating the throat. Well balanced: no sharp bitterness and no astringency. Lingering faint raisin-sweetness. 80/100.
20s – Pale salmon liquor. Very gentle bitterness against the light raisin sweetness. Some very mild astringency this time. Again, some light throat stimulation.
25s – Light bronze liquor. Raisins are stronger; sweet raisins return after the swallow.
40s – Light bronze liquor. Flavour is a little sub-dued compared to previous sessions. 60/100.
50s – Light bronze liquor. Some base sheng – end of session.

I thought this was a short session for 5g.

Flavors: Raisins

Not sure what I think of this one, didn’t gongfu it, just brewed it western style. No energy to gongfu it. It’s not bitter and fairly sweet with a taste I just don’t know how to describe. I have very little experience with white puerh and may have over steeped it at one minute. It’s a very light weight tea, I weighed out about nine grams and brewed it in my Glass Perfect Tea Maker.

LOL I’m blaming you a little for ordering some of this tonight… :)

AllanK

I did not exactly write a glowing review. Hope you like it.

Dexter

But I drank two versions in the last couple of days and LOVED them – saw this and well you know – had to give it a try considering how much easier it would be to have an online source – so thanks for posting. I bought a cake from Dragon Tea House too… :)

Ubacat

I have this tea and just reviewed it not that long ago. I was wondering why it wasn’t under this tea. It happens to be under GoShopStreet because that’s what was on the bag. It’s good tea!

Dexter

I had seen that review UbacatLOL and because of it you were getting some of the “blame” for my Moonlight purchases last night. I went looking, now that I read Yang-chu’s explanation in the sheng or shou thread, for “Yue Guang Bai” and found it on the ESGreen site too…. I’m still really confused – some companies have it under pu’erh and some under white – I ordered White Night from Mandala just on a whim (friend was talking about it) and it could be one of them but I didn’t realize that at the time…. I know nothing other than I REALLY liked the two samples OMGsrsly gave me and NEED to explore it more. :)

OMGsrsly

I ordered White Night from Mandala too! :D I’m going to send it and my two other examples to Sil to see what she thinks.

Ubacat

I’m not surprised you like Moonlight tea because to me it’s like a fusion of black and white (only it’s really not). I’m drawn in by the light taste & hay notes and just a hint of black. Because you like black teas, you are probably drawn in by the malty flavour that’s in some blacks. My first purchase of this tea was totally random and a nice surprise.

This is a tasty but smoky tea. I brewed this one western style this morning and added some of the tangerine peel. I don’t know how smoky it would have been had I used only leaves. I only used about a gram of tangerine peel or less and it is quite smoky. It is a pleasant smoky though. It is good. If you have never tried tangerine peel puerh it is different, almost but not quite another class of puerh. The best way I can describe it is that it is a sweet smokiness as opposed to a plain smokiness.

I brewed this tea one time in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 9g leaf and 1g tangerine peel with boiling water for 30 sec after giving it a ten second rinse.

Unfortunately due to the calcium channel blocker I take, citrus stored Sheng is off limits for me. So I silently enjoy it while reading reviews and try to imagine the flavor.

AllanK

I did not know citrus would interfere with that.

Cwyn

Citrus will triple the efficacy of calcium channel blockers. Apparently one of the components interacts with the citrus which prevents the clearing of the drug from the body. All medications are eliminated from the body up to a certain point, and dosages are based on the doctor knowing the stats of how much is automatically eliminated. So the dosage is based on how much you need versus how much will get naturally flushed out. If the flushing has interference, there is no way to know how much is too much. Also, the effect from the citrus can last 3-5 days. I’ve thought about going off the pill for a number of days in order to consume something citrus (like the fruit my sister sent me from Florida), and then wait another 5 days to start up the pill again. But when I go off the pill I swell up from water congestion and it is too uncomfortable.

MMMMmmmmmm shou…….
5g 140ml 95C flash rinsed twice
30 sec – that was a little too long – was a little in your face aggressive, but I don’t mind bold pu’erh so did another 30 sec steep and dumped them together. Yummy. It has a little fermentation taste to it but nice and smooth. It’s rich, it’s a little malty, but it’s all shou.
Backed down the steeps a little did 20 and 25 sec – this is getting a little chocolaty, a little woody, there is some fresh forest mustiness to it.
30 and 45 – this is just getting better and better.
I don’t think it’s as good as the other StreetShop88 shou that I have
http://steepster.com/teas/streetshop88/55915-2014-top-yunnan-yellow-dragon-golden-needle-puerh-ripe-cake
but it’s really tasty. That one is more of a cross between black tea and pu’erh. This one is all shou – and I don’t mind that at all. I would be very happy to have a cake of this in my house for those nights that you just want a big bold shou with no nasty….
Thank you so much Sil for sharing this – really happy you got some and shared it. :)

That second shot… So beautiful!! :)))
And, the first shot of the giant hunk of ‘tea friend’ kindness. :)

Sil

I’m so glad you enjoyed it since you technically picked it out lol

The Yellow Dragon is pretty good.

Oh hey I found my sample of this! WHOA! It’s a huge chunk as well!

Sil

Haha told you.

Thank you. :D It’s on my list of Things to Try Soon. :)

Another interesting tea from Sil – thank you.

This one is a little fruity and a little woody, it’s pretty sweet – but – there is something a little funky in the back ground. It’s not overly offensive, but might turn off someone new to pu’erh.
The funky disappears with later steeps but so does the interesting fruity notes. I don’t think I would buy this but was fun to drink a few steeps.

Sil

i think this one was the sample they sent me?

Dexter

Yes it was the sample. Even the liquor was a little cloudy muddy. It was OK but a little smelly feet.

This is a fairly tasty roasted oolong. It has a strong roasted flavor but the flavor is not too strong. It does not seem like an improperly roasted oolong.

Drank this one again this morning and changed the parameters. Used four pagodas instead of three and 185 degree water. It was much improved. No sour taste adn not so flat tasting today. Also increased the steep time to four minutes.

I brewed this one time in a Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 12g leaf and 185 degree water for 4 min.

Flavors: Malt

This tea is part malty, part fruity, and unfortunately part sour, less sour than the other notes. It also tastes a little bit flat to me, perhaps I did not use enough tea in the brew. I used 9g in brewing it western style in a 16oz tea pot. I gave it four minutes. Next time I will add three grams of tea to it and lower the water temperature.

I brewed this one time in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 9g leaf and 200 degree water for 4 min.

…oh…no….how disappointing. sour is not one of my preferred notes in tea, unless it’s iced tea and i put it there myself with a lemon!

Finished this one up tonight. We tried an oven rib recipe, so tonight’s meal was corn on the cob, ribs, fries and gravy heh. I figured i might as well use that as an excuse to finish this up tonight, with some being split off for tea friends. I’ve enjoyed this one, though it’s no special dark sigh I’d order it again though, so that says something.

Final Count for June: 107 – about 27 away from where i wanted to be, but not too shabby considering i picked up about 55 teas in Paris that i didn’t anticipate getting.

This tea is another winner from Streetshop88. All the tea I get from them seems to be good. This one despite being a 2003 tea did not have any of the unpleasant flavors sometimes associated with being somewhat aged. It was sweet and tasty with notes of what might be called dates or perhaps plums, its a matter of interpretation I guess. In any case it was good and I gave it fourteen steeps. It was not completely played out at fourteen steeps either. I’m sure I could have gotten twenty out of it but there is a limit to how much tea I can drink. There was only a hint of fermentation flavor to this tea, it was just a little bit earthy, perhaps ninety percent clear.

I steeped this fourteen times in a 120ml gaiwan with 10g leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1 min 15 sec, 1 min 30 sec, 2 min and 2 min 30 sec. I think this tea could have gone as far as twenty steeps if given longer times.

Overall this was a very good tea. I gave it two rinses , gave it a few minutes to open up then began drinking. It had strong notes of wet wood in the early steeps. These dissipated by the fourth steep and began to turn to sweet. By the sixth steep it was quite smooth. There was some bitterness in the early steeps which also disappeared. This was good tea, another winner from Streetshop88.

I brewed this twelve times in a 150ml gaiwan with 9.5g leaf and boiling water. I gave it two rinses, let a rest a few minutes then steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec. 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min and 2 min. This tea was by not means played out by the twelfth steep, I could have gotten a few more had I wanted to continue and I might just go back for steeps 13, and 14.

Went back and gave this two more steeps, it was really good. Too bad its only a 100g cake. I might want want to buy another.

Bought a 100g sample of this with my last Streetshop88 order. This is excellent tea. It was a little weak in the first two infusions. But that was my fault for not breaking up the cake. It is a very densely packed tea. It was sweet and smooth from the beginning, with almost no bitterness. I didn’t notice much in the way of changes in the tea in the first four infusions. Oddly enough, it seemed to get a little more bitter in later steeps. There were in the end some nice changes in this tea. I am going to have to order a whole bing of this tea as I is worth it. I only gave it eight steeps as I was already past my caffeine limit. Judging by the taste of steep eight I would say this tea could easily go fifteen steeps but that is just a guess. One negative thing about this tea was I couldn’t discern the sweet notes as specific notes, maybe that was me. Couldn’t quite call them stonefruits but maybe.

I steeped this eight times in a 120ml gaiwan with 10.2g leaf and 200 degree water. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec, and 45 sec.

Confident to buy a cake after one sample – that’s impressive.

AllanK

I want to buy it before they sell out.

tea123

I ordered some too.

AllanK

I think you’ll like this one. I have been quite impressed with Streetshop88’s teas.

tea123

I have nearly finished my 100g sample, and have really enjoyed it, so I have ordered a cake :)

AllanK

Glad you liked it. I just hope my cake is aging well. Not sure as there was no room in my pumidor and it is slow aging.

This only got brewed western style this morning. It is sweet, thick and somewhat earthy for a 2005 tea. I would definitely buy this again if they have any left when I run out, doubtful. This is another winner from Streetshop88.

I bought this partially for the novelty factor. It’s not a bad puerh but I didn’t think it was that great. It had a little bit of bitterness and a decent amount of sweetness. There was just a flavor to it that I didn’t quite like.

When I bought this I thought it was a smoky Lapsang, it is a sweet Lapsang Souchong and it is quite good. It has virtually no bitterness and virtually no astringency. It is not noticeably malty. This is quite a surprise from what I was expecting. This tea is sweet and tasty. This is another winner of a tea from Streetshop88. There is no need to add milk to this tea. I added sugar but I add sugar to almost all teas. You could definitely drink it straight if you wanted too. It has a nice natural sweetness.
