Surprisingly, for a 2007 raw, it tastes very green and vegetal to me, like I would expect of a 2013-15. It was light in color and didn’t have any of the typical mid-age sheng flavors that I expect. Definitely tastes of honey with a slight bitterness at the third steep. Good, lasting sweetness with a hint of fruit. I can agree with the raisin flavor notes, but I didn’t really identify a specific fruity flavor that I immediately said raisin..

This is a nice, inexpensive sweet ripe puerh from Streetshop88. There was a fair amount of fermentation flavor in the early steeps but I detected no fishiness or funk. There was a sweet flavor and little bitterness. There were fruity notes in later steeps. Didn’t notice if there were any notes of chocolate in there.

I steeped this eight times in a 180ml teapot with 11.7g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec. I could certainly gotten a few more steeps out of this tea had I wanted to.

This is an interesting tea that I thought was worth a try for the price. I have no way to confirm that it is wild tree ancient tree leaves. For the price I kind of assume it isn’t but who knows. The tea started out with a flavor that I can only describe as aged flavor. I don’t know how to describe the note but that a number of older teas I have drank have had it. It had no taste of wet wood indicating to me it was dry stored, probably. After about four steeps a bitterness developed. This bitterness largely went away after a few more steeps. There were also some sour notes to this tea. I have been told that sour notes are a common thing for dry stored tea. Never found any apricot or such sweet notes. This was a powerful tea but not really to my taste buds a sweet tea. They say bitter teas have better aging potential, I guess I shall find out. There was only a sweet note as the absence of bitterness in the last steeps if you get my drift. Oh, as to the age of this tea, I think the color of the tea being somewhat orange indicates it is really around ten years old.

I steeped this ten times in a 120ml gaiwan with 8.5g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 min. There was still a lot of color left in the leaves. Had I wanted to continue I’m sure I could have gotten half a dozen more steeps out of it.

Bought this a while ago from Streetshop88 and just now got around to trying it. It is pretty good overall. It had a fair amount of fermentation flavor that began to clear by the fourth steep. There was little bitterness to it. A nice sweet flavor developed. I would say a fruity flavor developed. This tea is a good value at under $30 too. Claims to be spring tea. There is no way to know if this is true but I tend to believe them. It’s not an outlandish claim although ripe is less likely to be spring tea.

I steeped this eight times in a 180ml teapot with 11.3g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec. The tea was not finished at eight steeps but I figure I’ve had enough caffeine for today. It would have certainly gone twelve steeps or more.

This is a fairly tasty and interesting ripe tea. Don’t know whether is uses real sticky rice or the rice flavor herb that is sometimes used. It has an earthy flavor from the ripe puerh and a kind of unusual sweet flavor from the sticky rice. Overall it is pretty good. Only brewed this western style today because I am getting ready for work, no time for gongfu.

I brewed this one time in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with two mini tuo cha or about 10g with boiling water for 30 seconds after giving it a long 20 second rinse to break up the mini tuo cha.

This is a most unusual tea, both in form and in taste. It is a braided puerh, the only one I have ever seen. The leaves are literally braided, I think by hand. It was a tea with almost no bitterness to it. I really didn’t notice any even in the first steep. There was, however an unusual taste to this tea. I would describe it as medicinal camphor taste. This taste was strong for about four steeps then it started to dissipate. Around the third steep I noticed some smoke. There was a nice sweet flavor behind all the camphor. I hope describing it as camphor is accurate. It was like I say somewhat medicinal in taste. I surprised myself by enjoying this tea a lot. I would definitely recommend this tea to anyone who likes this flavor profile. I did not think I did until I drank this tea. It is most unusual.

I steeped this tea eight times in a 120ml gaiwan with 9g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec. The leaves were not done at eight steeps but I want to drink something else.

I never left a review on this tea? I know I’ve had it awhile and have enjoyed it a few times so I’m surprised I never left a review.

Anyway, I’m enjoying it this afternoon. All that talk of chocolate pu-erh going on got me wanting some dark pu-erh.

I’m not getting much chocolate this afternoon. I know I have in the past from this tea so I figure it’s got to be from later infusions? I guess I will find out soon. Just brewed infusion Number 3. Lets see- sluuuuurp. Yep, it’s getting better.

I’ve had this one a couple times now but haven’t sat down to write a note. I’ve been working my way through it this morning and figured i should write something down. Let me start by saying this is a pretty bold tea right off the bat. First rinse was earthy and not too bad, but the first 30 sec infusion was REALLY strong…almost smokey earth but just a little too much for me.
(more to ocome)

I wrote that I LOVED steeps 9 and 10… maybe stay with it for awhile…. :)

oh i’m going to! just didn’t want to have the note sitting open while i kept at it haha

Decided that i need to try and have a few puerh/gonfy type sessions today because the weather is shit outside and i’m working from home. I also haven’t had a chance to do much of anything besides western brew so i’d like to change that. I have a ton of puerh that i want to revisit, some samples and a cupboard to get in order! :) I pulled this one out as i also want to try and get at least one sample down today. I’ve had this one before, courtesy of dexter (as is this sample) and i rather enjoy it.

oh god. i just lost my train of everything. we’re doing this mini “introduce the team” thing at work and i think i just convinced my boss to make it powerpuff super hero themed for fun…. which doesn’t happen in a bank normally for this sort of thing and i think he’s onboard since he just sent my his own avatar that he created, complete with his cat. oh god i am dying here…

This has got to be the strangest tea I have ever reviewed. I was expecting sweet and fruity. I have no idea if I brewed this anywhere near right. But it tastes like I am drinking a salty beef bouillon soup instead of tea. It is not something I would ever buy again. It does not taste fruity in the least.

I brewed one fruit or about 15g in boiling water for 3 minutes in 12 oz water.

Cwyn

I don’t know why but I got a chuckle out of this, I think it is the beef boullion flavor that cracked me up. Keep writing Allan, your posts are delightful.

AllanK

Since I don’t know if I brewed this completely wrong at 3 minutes I will try again at 15 seconds and see what I get. I have five more of them to get the brewing right. There were little in the way of brewing instructions online.

Cwyn

My experience with any herb is use a small piece and brew short. You can always add time and more herb. I start with a tsp of a new herb and adjust from there.

As I was too tired to break a cake I decided to have some mini tuo cha. This mini tuo cha from Streetshop88 is relatively good but not incredible. I only gave it five steeps so I admit I didn’t get the full effect of it. It was slightly bitter in the first steep. This bitterness took a couple of steeps to go away. While it did develop some sweetness, it never developed the abiding sweetness we all like in ripe tea. Maybe if I had given it eight steeps but I was brewing a lot of tea in a 250ml tea mug. There was not much fermentation flavor to this tea, it had aged a fair bit. The taste was not completely gone but nearly so. In any case there was none of the fermentation nastiness often associated with ripe tea. I think they were truthful about the age of the tea. This tea would qualify as a good daily drinker I suppose. I was just feeling too tired and lazy today to break a cake anyway.

I steeped this five times in a 250ml tea mug with two mini tuo cha about 11g and boiling water. I gave it a long 20 second rinse to break up the cakes and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, and 15 sec.

This was a highly interesting tea. If Cha Qi can be described as the effect a tea has on you, this one had a strong effect on me. I would not use the word tea drunk however. The first thing I noticed about this tea was that it has not cleared completely as far as fermentation flavor goes, although there was none of the extreme nastiness that some find with fermentation. You would think a 1990s tea would have totally cleared. The tea started off thick and sweet. during the third steep it developed a bitterness that persisted into the fourth steep. By the fifth steep a sweet flavor again emerged, different from the original one. It developed a fruity sweetness. There was also at times a faint but discernible sour note. This was fleeting and never for more than an instant. The leaves on this tea were huge, it is as the description states big leaf tea. As for the claim of age and ancient tree who can be certain.I tend to doubt the claim of ancient tree but then I am naturally skeptical about such claims for inexpensive teas. I am not unhappy for having bought it, I will say that. I would probably be upset if I had spent a lot of money but it was at least an experience. Much of the tea I drink does not qualify for that. There were many flavors to this tea although it is often hard for me to describe the specific notes. Some might describe the early notes as chocolate but I don’t quite think that sums it up. The later notes were quite fruity although I have failed to pin down a specific.

I steeped this tea ten times in a 180ml teapot with 10.3g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 min. Judging by the color in the liquid in the tenth steep I would say this tea only had a couple of more good steeps to it. I do not think it would go past twelve maybe thirteen steeps.

This is a tasty ripe puerh with none of the extreme nastiness of fermentation. I am not saying it has cleared all fermentation flavor just that the worst of it is gone. I was too lazy to gongfu this this morning so it only got brewed western style. It has a nice fruity sweetness to it. This is another example of a good tea that streetshop88 has sold me. While they sell mostly off brands I have gotten some good stuff from them. I have a number of their teas waiting to be tried but that I haven’t gotten around to yet.

I brewed this once in a Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 3 tsp leaf and boiling water for 30 sec after giving it a 10 sec rinse.

My Streetshop order arrived in my mailbox today (this tea and that puerh cake everyone was raving about… :) ). I was pleasantly surprised at just how much of this tea I received, as I’m not very good at imagining the size of a package by the weight of the tea.
The tea leaves themselves are beyond gorgeous…. silver white fuzzy leaves, accented by dark black matte ones. Just a really beautiful tea…
I decided to brew this one western this time, since my house seems kind of busy right now, and I like to reserve my gaiwan moments for more serene scenes… I used a lower temp water (somewhere around 175-180), in 8oz, with my filter basket filled pretty high because this is a fluffy tea.
The liquor is golden and lovely, looking even more pretty in my lustreware cup.
Upon first sip, I just think, “thank you so much Dexter for recommending this tea”…. It’s light with a smooth finish, but has this deep note running through it, like a bass note, rounding it out and making it feel unique.
Yeah, I can see myself wanting this in my cupboard for quite some time…. it also seems like a really perfect summer tea. :D

Dexter

Yay so happy you liked it :)

From swap with AllanK
These things look so awesome!
Unfortunately they do not have as much flavor or smoothness as a dian hong or many dragon pearls that I have had. This might taste better to someone who enjoys their coffee as well as tea.
I do enjoy watching these open up though :)

The bad: I was drinking through my YUNOMI teas today and put them on hold after I smelled this.

The good: AllanK sent me this along with some shou in our swap.I have been really excited to start exploring more pu’erh as I begin to look at buying my first shou cake on my birthday (over 60 days away still). However the aroma of this one has put Japanese and pu’erh teas on hold. It is teas like this that are persuading me to stop trying lower end green, oolong, and white teas. The aroma of this tea makes me happy enough to not worry about the taste. I rate on flavor though and this has it. Honestly, no bitterness in a black tea… that makes me one happy drinker :)

This is something I will savor.

This is in my opinion another winner from Streetshop88 on EBay. It had a fair amount of fermentation flavor in the early steeps and a fair amount of bitterness. The bitterness was soon a memory and I was left with a delicious slightly sweet tea. This was a fairly strong tea but not incredibly so. I steeped it eight times and judging by the color of the eighth steep I’m sure it would have gone twelve or more. I don’t know if the words in the title “golden buds” means it has more buds than a usual puerh but it is tasty. I am not unhappy for having bought the bing. I did notice a very slight sour note in the first steep but I did not taste it again. It may have been my taste buds.

I steeped this tea eight times in a 170ml teapot with 10.4g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and let the leaves rest for 10 minutes. No time or patience for a longer rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec.

It should be noted that I don’t think this tea was quite stored properly, depending on an argument of storage. It was sent to me shrink wrapped in heavy plastic and was obviously stored that way. It is the opinion of most people that puerh needs to breathe. That being said this was decent tea with no off flavors. It was just in my opinion a little flat tasting. It was strong. In the eighth steep it looked stronger than some teas look in their second steep. I am sure I could have kept going if I had the desire or the caffeine tolerance. It’s not like there was no sweetness to this tea it just didn’t impress me. Perhaps after a semi humid Long Island summer it will come back. My pumidor is just for sheng or I would rehydrate it there. It should be noted that I didn’t taste any fermentation flavor in this tea.

I steeped this tea eight times in a 120ml gaiwan with 8.7g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse then let the leaves rest for ten minutes. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec.

This tea is neither terrible nor is it incredible, it is somewhere in the middle. Judging by the strength of my last steep, steep eight it could be ancient tree. I think this would easily go fifteen steeps. It was still very strong in steep eight. As to big leaf tea it certainly is big leaf tea, that is apparent in the leaves. There was a slight sour note in the first two steeps that went away by steep three or so. There was little bitterness in the tea. It did develop a decent sweetness to it. Some people will really like this tea and some people will hate it. One note to mention, there was little aroma in the dry leaves and the tea came packed in heavy shrink wrap. I suppose they were trying to prevent degrading of the tea.

I steeped this tea eight times in a 120ml gaiwan with 8.7g leaf and boiling water. I gave the tea a ten second rinse then let the leaves sit for ten minutes. I steeped the tea for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, and 30 sec.

Having seen the Instagram photos, this would be a tea I know I would like. Since it isn’t heicha, it definitely is huang pian leaf. The sour note on the first couple steeps suggests really dry storage and the cake could get really a dusty rub on it. The shrink wrap probably keeps those leaves looking nice which they definitely do! An interesting tea.

AllanK

I am curious to see if you buy one of these cakes. It was an excellent price. I think it’s still available. What is the significance of huang pian leaf?

This is a tea with a deep abiding smoky flavor and a bitter character. In fact it reminds me a little, just a little of the Old Bear by White2Tea. I am not saying it is as good mind you, just that that is the tea that comes to mind when I drank this. I would say it took most of ten steeps for the smoky character to subside. There was still some bitterness even in the tenth steep. There was some sweetness behind all this but not an abiding apricot flavor or such. The tea had developed a fairly nice color from what I could tell. I was drinking from a dark cup so it was hard to be sure but I think the color was a dark yellow, almost an orange in the second steep. Because this is such a large brick I think it will age a little slower than the average tea. If this tea appeals to anyone there was only one left in stock at Streetshop88 on EBay. It was a bargain at only around $45 or so. I do not know how this will age and it will have to be dry stored because I am out of room in my pumidor. I enjoyed this tea despite how smoky it was.

I steeped this ten times in a 150ml gaiwan with 9.5g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a ten second rinse and let the tea sit for ten minutes. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 min. This tea was far from finished at ten steeps. I think it would have gone another five at least with longer steeps. I however was finished at ten steeps.

This is a wonderfully detailed and informative review on smoky puerh cakes, we all have at least one smoky tea. Sounds like a good plan on your part, I’m not sure I would put this in my pumidor. I store all my smoky tuos together in a crock. Once this smoke integrates and fades, the tea will have a more mineral or graphite smell, so the bitterness will come in handy then to provide the bittersweet flavor at the front. I’m sure whatever storage solution you decide on is literally a rescue for this tea.

AllanK

No room for it in the pumidor anyway. If I had a crock that would be a good idea. For now it is in a cardboard box.

Cwyn

I bought a 500g brick of shou and broke it up in small pieces to put it in a crock. It filled up a 1 gallon crock plus another 1/3 gallon or so. If I had that brick of yours I would do the same. The tea would age evenly, and the smoke would clear out some and integrate some. Also, some of the char will fall out of the tea which reduces the smokiness too. But if I were to want to keep it intact as a collector piece, then of course I wouldn’t break it up. Yours has characters pressed into it as well, yet another consideration.

Liquid Proust

That is a brick.

AllanK

At the moment I don’t have anyplace to break it for aging. I have one unused Yixing but only less than half would fit so that won’t work. Where do you get your crocks for aging.

I had high hopes for this brick because a 200g bing by the same tea factory was so damn good. That was also called Lucky Dragon, I forget the year. I also bought it from Streetshop88. This tea was not bad, it just started out with a flavor that I am not fond of, wet wood or bamboo depending on how you want to describe it. After several steeps the brick began to mellow out and lose this flavor and evolve in to a mildly sweet brick. It never developed that abiding sweetness that is the hope of all ripe teas however. It was not a bad tea, just not a great tea. In fact, to someone who is a fan of the taste of wet wood it is a bargain worth buying at under $20. It did get much better as I resteeped the leaves. I don’t recommend this tea and I don’t not recommend this tea, it is just not to my tastes, it might be to yours.

I steeped this tea ten times in a 170ml teapot with 10.4g leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, and 45 sec. This tea was pretty weak at ten steeps. It would not go much more than twelve steeps.

strange name, fitness brick!

Cwyn

How long have you been storing it?

AllanK

About a month and a half. And yes it has a strange aspect to its name. I don’t think drinking it will make me any fitter.

I am thinking this tea might have been better with less in the way of leaves.

This value priced tea from Streetshop88 was pretty good. It was bittersweet in the early infusions. It was thick and very earthy. It held an earthy character for I would say eight steepings. It had what I would describe as a thick mouthfeel. There was a flavor note that I was unable to identify. It was not a note that I particularly liked or disliked, it was just there. I think another year or two of aging will improve this tea dramatically. This is one of the few examples of a ripe MengSong tea I have found. I don’t know that I could find the MengSong character behind the fermentation.

I steeped this tea ten times in a 170ml teapot with 10.2g leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 min. The tea was by no means finished I was simply finished with the tea. Had I wanted to I think I would have gotten at least five more steeps out of this. This was strong tea.

I had to try out this tea after Allan left his review and got a sample (100g) size from StreetShop88. Usually I throw out a few infusions before I start drinking. I can’t go loads of infusions with my teas so that doesn’t bother me. I will always try a sip to see if I like it and if not I will move onto the next infusion.

With this tea it definitely looks like a ripe pu-erh! After getting it in the mail, I am just now getting around to trying it because I was thinking, it’s definitely a shu. I’m not always in the mood for a shu and so left it pretty long.

I used boiling water for the quick rinses. The leaves were packed so tightly and didn’t really come loose with those two rinses. I could see the brew was light like a sheng and that delighted me. So strange to see those dark dark leaves turn green and brew a light tea. On the first infusion I did 10 sec at boiling and tried it . I was sweet and no bitterness. Very light too. I think my favourite infusions were the first two when the leaves were just breaking up. The tea was light and sweet. After that bitterness really got into it so I threw out that infusion and reduced the temperature to 185. Some of the bitterness was still there but honey sweetness was definitely going. It was okay but not like the first couple of infusions. The brew became very dark too. A dark amber.

Next time I plan on starting off with low temperatures almost right away and see what happens with this tea. I’ll just write myself a post-it note and slap it on the tea package for next time. Does anyone else do that? I have post it notes on a lot of my tea packages and tins. I can’t always remember what the perfect brewing time is or what it was like last time. Most of the time I can’t even remember having it if a month or so has gone by since I last had it! Checking my reviews on Steepster takes time and most times I just like to get right into the brewing so the post-it notes serve me well.

Just made one more infusion and since there are sooo many leaves cramming my little gaiwan I decided instead of increasing the infusion to go backwards back to 10 sec. Yep, that worked for me. I think I used about 5 g for my tiny gaiwan and now I see that’s just too much. Next time I will go a lower amount.

Flavors: Honey

AllanK

I’m glad you liked it. Never thought of the idea of post it notes.
