408 Tasting Notes

Visiting Mariage’s shop,I was hesitating in shop between this tea and Montagne d’or.
Not sure I made the right choice regarding my taste.
Montagne de Jade is a green tea, really grassy but incredibly perfumed on the other hand.
Dry leaves just smell fantastic and you’ll find many corn flowers mixed with tea leaves:it’s just so beautiful.
Drinking it, you’re leaving the 21th centuary and come back in 19th centuary…you’re sitting in a Victorian living room with 3 grand aunts, you have the most beautiful bone china tea cups of the town…and you can hear the loud tick ticking of the large clock behind you …so relaxing…

It sounds magic but…there is a but…

My concern…but it is really my own concern with green teas is the bitterness.
Montagne de Jade is made for green teas lovers I think. This tea is really one of the best sellers of this brand and I am sure this is for its high qualities.
Unfortunately I am not susceptible to its undeniable and numerous charms

I love your scene! I must be one of the old Aunts! Lovely!

I’ll volunteer for auntie duty as well. As long as I don’t have to wear a corset!

What a fantastic tea mint…not astringent, not bitter with a very present flavour of mint.

The dry leaf perfume is delivering all its promises after steeping.

With a low caffeine level, this is a perfect evening tea.

I should recognize I am very mint tea…and generally very good public for…what is your favourite tea mint ?

First : Ruby Woo Scarlett, Mélissa, you are both right : Rouge d’Automne exists in 3 versions : Black, Green and Rooibos.

I do agree the name of the tea itself is confusing as for a French speaker Rouge means as well rooibos – Most of French people probably use more thé rouge than rooibos)

Initially when I added this tea to the steepster database it was for the black blend (the only one I tasted)

So my note is for the Black version : I am desesperately in love with Rouge d’Automne.
First time I tasted it was during a lunch at Mariages & Frères. A tea is included in the menu as beverage and I wanted to taste especially this one.

I sniffed it before the Lunch and wanted to buy a full bag and wanted to ensure it wouldn’t be a mistake.

It was definitively not a mistake : the Vanilla + Chestnut are just a dream : a creamy and sweet dream.

The mix is really working fine – It may be not a very subtile mix, definitevely not the finest Mariage tea but I do really love it and I do really love it very very very much.

You’re lucky to be able to buy mariage freres easily. I’m hoping that I can get back to la belle France next year to stock up teas and visit some tea houses there.

Ysaurella

I understand how you feel because I can read on steepster so many notes about wonderful teas I cannot buy in France and cannot buy at all because the companies are not shipping to France…I recommand Dammann Frères,Le Palais des thés and The O dor for your next visit in Paris

Sil

Ooh thank you for the recommendations. I’m super busy these days but maybe in the future I can see if there’s a way to get some of the teas you’d like to try over to you. :)

I am very Citrus teas…this one had a wonderful perfume that’s the reason why I decide to buy it when I was visiting the Mariage shop rue des grands Augustins.

The point is I am not very green teas because I often find them a little bit bitter.I hope this will change with time as green teas are so often mentionned as very good for health.

Le thé des légendes is a little too much bitter for me – even if I tried several times to steep it less time – even if I added some sugar in my mug.

I have no doubt this is really a great tea but it’s unfortunatelly not done for me

drank Prince Vladimir by Kusmi Tea
408 tasting notes

I am generally not very fond of Kusmi teas (I often find the taste disappointing vs the fantastic promise of the smell – the promises were too much beautiful regarding what I finally get in my cup of tea)

2 main exceptions : Anastasia and Prince Wladimir (in French the Prince is named with a W not a V – weird…)

Prince Wladimir delivers all his promises : a huge flavour of citrus fruits combined with a soft but very present Vanilla and overall spices (Especially clove)

However in this Kusmi tea you’ll get real pieces of citrus fruits in addition of natural flavours

A real travel in Russia… thank you Pavel Kousmichoff !

cteresa

I am also not a fan of Kusmi (though I admit to being unduly influenced in wanting to like those because I love the tins). Thanks for the tip about this, will try it one of these days.

This note is for the black tea. But Full Moon Party exists in a green tea version.
These 2 teas are only available in the canister, this means it is a little bit expensive to taste.
If you love the Thé Pleine Lune of Mariage and his wonderful taste of almonds and vanilla you’ll probably enjoy this tea.
The difference is thin to be honnest but the Full Moon Party is maybe a little bit sweeter and you can feel the taste of delighted roses.
I think I won’t buy it again (In paris it costs 22 € for 100 gr – box included of course) and continue to buy my adored Pleine Lune tea.

drank Prince Igor by Mariage Frères
408 tasting notes

Prince Igor is a Borodine’s Opera and a fantastic tea.
As it is a mixed black and green tea, don’t steep it too much (5 minutes are enough)
you’ll taste a fantastic and sweet taste of vanilla, agrums, red fruits and light sunflowers.

Personnaly I drink this tea in the morning but it may be a better afternoon tea as it is very perfumed and soft.

I’ve always been surprised this tea wasn’t very well known in the Mariage & Frères fabulous card.

I’d love to get your american views about it !

Bonnie

I like the thought of this tea. My mother sang Opera and my memories are haunting. It would be wonderful to write a review and think on those days. (By the way, my Nephew David lives in Paris and would live nowhere else in the world! He has been considering changing his citizenship because he has lived there for 10-12 years now. A handsome, educated young man too!)

ashmanra

I have not seen this ne available in the US. I used to sing a bit of opera and now teach voice. It would be a fun tea to try! Perhaps it can be ordered from the website and shipped to the USA.

Bonnie

Ashmanra, you teach voice?! I had no idea?! La La La La!

Ysaurella

Hi Ashmanra, yes you can order it on the website, the company is shipping to the USA with UPS

darby

I’ve tried to use Mariage Frères online site and it always gives me trouble. I would probably buy the whole store if I had the money!

First, please forgive me for my English and all the grammatical mistakes you’ll find in my posts.
As English isn’t my mother tongue it sometimes makes things more difficult to express cleverly and accurately what I feel.

I was mainly in black flavoured teas, green as well if not bitter.
I’m now drinking much straight teas because my palate is now developed enough to appreciate them .

My favourite brands are : Taiwan tea Crafts, Teavivre, Mariage Frères,Theodor,Butiki Teas,Dammann Frères, Betjeman & Barton.
My ratings are as follow :

100 to 95 : my darlings; always in my cupboard (or very often ! )

94 to 90 : Excellent tea

89 to 80 : very good tea, a pleasure to drink it

79 to 70: not bad even quite nice, why not having it sometimes, but well,it’s not so urgent !

69 to 50 : Meh, deceptive or just not for me – but has some qualities

49 to 30 : I just don’t appreciate it

Under 30 : is this thing supposed to be tea ?!?!?
