drank Sweet Oblivion by Carytown Teas

This tea is just okay. I have other teas that are more effective at inducing relaxation and sleep. I do like that this tea is organic and fairtrade, though. The taste is quite bland. Once I finish this bag I will not be buying another. The herbal blend is on-point but the herbs used are past their storage prime and are weak. Steeped 1 tbsp in a stainless steel teaball with boiling water for 10-15 minutes, drank plain.

Carytown Teas description of this tea : Organic Valerian Root -several studies in adults suggest that Valerian improves the quality of sleep and reduces the time to fall asleep (sleep latency). Ongoing nightly use may be more effective than single-dose use, with increasing effects over 4 weeks. Better effects have been found in poor sleepers. Organic Bulgarian Lemon Balm has effective sedative action and has been used for years in folk medicine to relaxation. Organic Green Rooibos has a soothing affect on the central nervous system. Organic Egyptian Chamomile contains a flavanoid called Chrysin which is the chemical attributed to its ability to relieve anxiety and promote sleep. Organic Fennel helps with a variety of sleep disorders, Organic Peppermint proves beneficial to reduce sleep deprivation, job stress, headache and fatigue that one feels on a regular basis, Organic St. John’s Wort promotes restful sleep and, unlike conventional medications, rather than interfere with dreaming, actually enhances it.

I will agree somewhat with a previous user on the taste of this tea – someone described the taste as “spicy bubblegum” – it tastes like bubblegum (and not in a good way) but is not that spicy. Let me explain my reference for what I think is spicy – I grow my own fresh thai, cayenne, habanero, anaheim and jalapeno peppers at home in my garden. I am a big fan of spicy things in general. I had high hopes for this tea, but after trying it I looked more closely at the ingredients ( green tea, green & roasted maté, South African rooibos, rosebuds, blossoms (safflower, marigold, peony, and cornflower), ginseng root, chili peppers, carrot flakes, mango and pineapple cubes (mango, pineapple, sugar), mango and pineapple flakes, dried orange and tangerine pieces, dried strawberry, almond and other flavoring ) and was truly saddened to see that although it had so many wonderful -sounding ingredients none of them really shone through. Was also miffed that it did not specifically state what kind of chiles were in the tea – chiles have varying levels of spice depending on the variety. Steeped with boiling water for 8-10 minutes.

This Organic Weightless Cranberry tea is what I always use right after my period or during times of extreme inflammation (or when I’ve had too much IV fluid after a surgery) to eliminate water weight. For use by women and men.

Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding, have a kidney disease, are under 12, or are dehydrated (as per instructions on box). The description this tea (created by another user) needs to be updated but I cannot do that until my acct is a month old, so here are the updated ingredients until I can edit it : organic fennel fruit, organic red clover, organic uva ursi leaf, organic parsley leaf, organic cleavers herb, organic hibiscus flower, organic roasted chicory root, organic cranberry fruit, organic stevia leaf. As per box instructions I use just boiled water and steep 10-15 mins, drinking 3 cups a day for 2-3 days. If you are trying to lose weight in general this tea is not for you, it is only meant to be used for relief of temporary water weight bloat.

The flavor of this tea is pleasant. The cranberry and hibiscus are the strongest tastes, giving a pleasantly tart fruit flavor. This taste intermingles with the anise flavor from the fennel, and the sweetness of the stevia to create a delicious cuppa that you will want to drink more often that you should haha. But is best to only drink it when you need to as per box instructions, as these herbs are very potent. The tea is ruby red in color and is very pretty to look at. A mainstay in my cupboard.

Very savory flavor. No bitterness. Steeped for 3 minutes, at boiling. Added some Himalayan pink salt as I usually do to my savory teas -it enhances the seaweed flavor and helps with any bitterness. I would like to re-try this tea when I get another smart tea kettle. Mine broke just before starting this acct so I don’t know what temperature my water is other than boiling the moment. Bit frustrated as I have gone through 2 Cuisinart PerfecTemps -they are not very sturdy. Looking for a recommendation on a better temperature gage tea kettle or smart tea brewer. Thanks.

Ah, this tea brings back memories. It’s one the first green teas that I started out drinking. Not high end stuff, but smooth and satisfying. I used it a lot to make Moroccan Mint tea.

Interesting idea to put pink salt in tea, I will have to try it!

ScottTeaMan

The salt is a great idea Amie! :D Try brewing this for 3 minutes at 180 degrees. I do guesstimate the water temperature. Wait for light steam to rise from the spout (leaving spout open so you can more easily gauge the steam), and once the steam lightly rises, I wait another 10-15 seconds. It’s a close approximation, but you can also let the kettle boil, then wait 3-5 minutes before pouring over leaves.

Gunpowder teas can usually be resteeped at least 2 more times, because they are rolled into a pellet shape. Try this:

Steep 1: 180 degrees (light steam rising), steeped for 3 minutes.
Steep 2: 195 degrees (medium steam rising), steep 3-3.5 minutes.
Steep 3: 212 degrees (boiling), steep 4 to 5 minutes.

Of course it is trial and error at first, but after doing this a few times you should have a better idea of what works and how you like the tea! Also, usually when I do multiple steeps, I add more tea—up to twice as much(seems to work for me). One of the fun things about tea is experimenting like this, and a decent gunpowder tea like TOH is usually reasonably priced.

Amie, I hope this helps further your enjoyment of tea! :D

ScottTeaMan

If you do add more tea as I mentioned above, I would reduce first two steep times, by roughly a minute. That’s only a suggestion, and by experimenting with steep times, you will come to know what you like. :D

Amie

LuckyMe – I will have to try making some Moroccan Mint with it :) ScottTeaMan – Thank you for the advice!! Much appreciated :)

I have tasted this tea multiple times and do not detect any vanilla. It is also not as strong in rooibos flavor as their Organic Rooibos. I am a huge fan of real vanilla and was very disappointed. I will not be ordering this tea again.

A decent maple tea. The aroma has a nice amount of maple, and the taste has less but still a nice amount. No bitterness coming from the black tea. A nice malty background. Because I am Canadian and have tasted SO MANY maple teas, I am probably more critical than most of this type of tea, and I am always looking for more maple and so far I have not found that holy grail of maple teas yet. This one is nice enough that I would re-order and drink as a casual tea, but it is not “the one”. I find their Sugar Maple tea to have more more maple in it, and indeed it is the box I empty first. The Canadian Breakfast is nice if you are looking for a black breakfast tea as implied, and the Sugar Maple is sweeter so I consider it a dessert tea. Both could work for different purposes. If you are on the fence about ordering them, I would still recommend it – they are very pleasant for what they are.

Extremely relaxing! The chamomile and lavender are equally balanced to create a delicate floral treat. The lemon balm is in the background. I am a big lavender fan and was worried this tea would be too weak since it is bagged -but it is incredible! Traditional Medicinals never seems to let me down!! Trouble dragging ratings on tablet – I steep it 10 mins or more, with just boiled water. I’ m kinda miffed that chamomile is not an option to add to the noticed flavors box.

drank Tummy Tonic by Carytown Teas
24 tasting notes

Had this one for awhile. I wouldn’t say it’s my go-to tummy tea, however I do find it to be a nice calming tea for my nervous system if I am stressed. The chamomile is the top note, followed by the sweetness of the licorice, then the mint and ginger. All ingredients are organic and fair trade. Steeped 10 mins with just boiled water.

drank St. Clair's Select by Umami

This brew is quite tasty and effective. The ginger is on point and makes one’s whole mouth and throat feel warm. The mint is quite calming. This is one of my favorite medicinal teas for treating nausea. Supposedly there is orange peel in the blend – I do not detect it -which is a slight let down, but nonetheless the tea works very well and keeps getting refilled for my needs. My tablet is not letting me drag the steep and temp , so I will say that I steep it a good 10 mins with just boiled water to extract the most out of each steeping.

drank Citrus Berry Sencha by Umami
24 tasting notes

Another of my favorites from Umami ! I drink this one as a pick me up when I need an instant inner smile. It has an ethereal brightness and floral air. The citrus from the yuzu is like sunshine. Not sure if I’m supposed to, but I smell some jasmine in this blend – a light wafting. The citrus gives it a tropical feel. I always drink this one plain – it needs no adjustments.

It’s kind of dreary here in RVA, and tonight I’m painting and listening to some of my favorite Canadian ladies (I live in the US now but I’m from Canada) Sarah Harmer, Jann Arden, Sarah Slean, Chantal Kreviazuk , Be Good Tanyas, Alanis Morisette, K.D. Lang, Sarah McLaughlan, Feist :) Getting my old Lilith Fair vibes on – yes, I went to Lilith Fair, and yes, I’ve always been an earth mama.

Profile

Bio

I’m not really good at describing myself but I’ll try :) I’m 33, married to an awesome guy and mother to a rescue beagle. I’m trained in the teaching/ youth work vein and love to volunteer. I’m a nature lover and also love to garden – growing flowers, food and herbs organically. Nativescaping. I love to be creative and am always trying something new – right now I’m crocheting, cross-stitching, cutting bottles and turning them in to candles, watercolor painting and making fairy gardens. I’ve loved tea my whole life, and have always been a leaf over bean person.

Tea Likes : I am a big fan of fruit/vegetable herbal and medicinal tisanes. I actually make alot of medicinal tisanes from my garden. Love savory teas. I heart rooibos as well, it has such a beautiful well-rounded flavor that never becomes bitter and has an inherent sweetness – nothing need be added. I am also a massive spice fan – things can never be too spicy for me (and are often not enough so). I usually drink 4-6 cups of tea per day.I love unusual and earthy flavors. I will try anything, and don’t do sugar or dairy but sometimes will add unsweetened coconut, almond or cashew milk.

I only log a tea once, even if I drink it all the time.

Since I am reviewing two different kinds of tea on here, pleasure teas and medicinal teas, I will not be using a regular scale. A medicinal tea may not taste great but may work extremely well. I will do my best to convey my opinions of the teas I try for the benefit of those who are interested.

I am a big believer in snail mail and would be up for trades / sample sharing. If you see anything in my cupboard you would like to try, shoot me a message :)
